Editorial

In March 2020, the whole world and the entertainment industry in particular was facing a situation beyond anyone’s worst nightmares and which no one could have imagined. We went through every emotion - shock, uncertainty, hope, disillusionment and of course the sadness of not being able to do our job and give festival-goers what they so badly want. But as in any major crisis, there is always a small glimmer of light that can bring unexpected strength and boost creativity. The soul of the MJF lies in reinventing its model over time while preserving the spirit so dear to our founder: music above all else, but also the warmth of the welcome and the art of sharing.

So, with this creative energy, the entire MJF team spent months coming up with ideas, shaping new projects and accelerating a transformation process that was already in the pipeline. This passion, this self-sacrifice, which could even be described as tenacity, has always been guided by this simple but motivating leitmotiv that we cherish: nothing is impossible, you just have to believe. Mathieu Jaton, CEO Montreux Jazz Festival It is therefore with pride and emotion that we present to you, dear journalist friends, this 55th edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival. The journey has been full of challenges and this will certainly continue to be the case until the last day of the Festival. However, delivering the show fills us with joy, not only because it has been created in such special circumstances, but above all because it reveals more than ever who we are and what the Festival has been, is and will continue to be.

In a Festival first, a stage will be constructed entirely on the lake, 25 metres from the shore. Surrounded by the lake and the Alps, artists will play to a tiered terrace that can accomodate a seated audience of up to 500.

ARLO PARKS THURSDAY 15 JULY At just 20 years of age, Britain’s most poetic female singer has just been voted ‘Best New Artist’ at the 2021 . Combining pop and soul with a hint of folk and trip hop, Arlo Parks’ hushed vocals are set against the backdrop of organic, comforting music. Of Nigerian, Chadian and French origin, openly bisexual, through her lyrics Arlo Parks reflects the quest for identity and hopes of a whole generation. Her debut album Collapsed In Sunbeams is a formidable collection of finely crafted songs, full of pop and literary references.

BRANDÃO FABER HUNGER FRIDAY 9 JULY Faber, and Dino Brandão have come together for an album, Ich liebe Dich, released at the end of 2020. Their first collaboration is above all a manifesto of love - twelve songs in Swiss-German dialect recorded at La Fabrique studio in the south of . The trio was born during the lockdown, united by their home region, life on tour, sleepless nights and a shared melancholy tinged with self-mockery. To preserve the urgency and fragility of the songs, they recorded everything with six hands. Dino on drums and percussion, influenced by the Angolan rhythms he listened to with his father. Julian on bass, revisiting his youth in a punk band. Sophie on piano infused with jazz vibes.

SOFIANE PAMART WEDNESDAY 7 JULY A virtuoso classical pianist who composes music for the best French rappers? At the age of 31, this Belgian artist, reared on the musical repertoires of Chopin and Booba, is regarded as a musical prodigy. Awarded a gold medal by the Lille national conservatoire at the age of 7, twenty years later his career continues as the self-proclaimed “French Piano King”, collaborating with top dogs Vald, Koba LaD, Médine and Scylla, who performed with him at the Festival in 2019. A bold composer, enlightened producer and shrewd entrepreneur, Sofiane has now released Planet, his first solo album. Across twelve tracks from Chicago to Cairo, he mixes 2 SHOWS classical, rap, jazz and Oriental sounds. 55TH MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL 9 2-17 JULY 2021 - MJF.CH

SPECIAL NIGHTS

A small scale concert on the lake? These four artists, close to the Festival and accustomed to performing on the great stages of the world, have honoured us by accepting the challenge with enthusiasm. Having made their mark at the Auditorium Stravinski, their concerts on the lake are sure to be among the great thrills of this edition.

ZUCCHERO MONDAY 12 & TUESDAY 13 JULY In 2018, Zucchero set the Auditorium Stravinski, alight with a dozen musicians at his side. This summer, the man behind “” promises the same fervour in condensed form, accompanied by two musicians in a setting as intimate as it is unusual. His tailor-made performance will focus on the essentials: the raw power of his songs, his inimitable voice and a constant intensity. This will be his 4th appearance at the Festival, where he performed a memorable with in 2004.

IBRAHIM MAALOUF MONDAY 5 JULY The Lebanese trumpet player shares a beautiful history with Montreux. It was here, in 2017, that he was spotted by . Ibrahim Maalouf then paid tribute to the legendary producer at his 85th birthday celebrations at the 2 SHOWS Montreux and joined him 2 SHOWS on stage to revisit Michael Jackson’s WOODKID classics. SCÈNE DU LAC Multifaceted Rock From Turkish, Creole or British inspiration, different faces of will be represented on the Lake Stage, exploring psychedelic, or alternative sounds.

INHALER FRIDAY 2 JULY Inhaler revive the post-rock wave of the early 80s to strike a chord with the pressures of today's world. A crisp pop , catchy melodies and an instinctively rock vibe: the Dublin quartet plays with the verve of and the romanticism of Kings of Leon. Praised by NME and selected by the BBC for its prestigious “Sound of 2020” list, this group of school friends can afford to think big. While waiting for their debut album, Inhaler have already opened for Noel Gallagher and unveiled several promising singles, including “We have to move on”, the anthem of a generation with a zest for life.

DELGRES SUNDAY 4JULY Delgres sing in Creole about the blues, exile and modern slavery, while the sound of the , the rhythms of the drums and the blasts of the sousaphone become sounding boards for hopes and despair. After a nomination at the 2019 and more than 300 concert dates around the world, the power trio is celebrating its comeback with the album 4:00 AM. Four o’clock in the morning, wake-up time for so many workers. For it is the everyday heroes and underdogs that the band celebrates on this album. Two hundred years after the death of the Antillean anti-slavery leader Louis Delgrès, his spiritual sons continue the struggle of the oppressed to the rhythm of a feverish, engaging and unifying groove. ALTIN GÜN WEDNESDAY 14 JULY Altin Gün’s irresistible sunny groove blurs the boundaries between past and present, East and West. The story of the band (“golden day” in Turkish) began when Dutch bassist Jasper Verhulst discovered Turkish rock in the 1970s, with artists such as Selda Bağcan. He then set out to revisit this trend and take it to new horizons, together with the voices of Merve Dasdemir and Erdinç Ecevit Yıldız, who also plays the saz (a type of lute). In 2020, their album Gece was nominated for a Grammy. Continuing their explorations between hypnotic folk and hallucinatory rock, the band even tried their hand at synthpop sounds on the brilliant album Yol, released this year. 55TH MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL 11 2-17 JULY 2021 - MJF.CH

SCÈNE DU LAC & PETIT THÉÂTRE MJF Spotlight In January, the Festival unveiled its Top 20 artists to watch this year, as part of its new digital brand MJF Spotlight, dedicated to promoting emerging talent. Four artists from this list are on the programme for this edition!

NATHY PELUSO THURSDAY 8 JULY She is the shockwave revolutionising . Nathy Peluso is fearless, constantly evolving in search of the avant-garde. Based in Barcelona, the Argentinian artist is able to take jazz, trap or salsa sounds and make them her own. All delivered with fierce individuality, crazy energy and unique attitude, whether on stage or in her videos. Nathy is also a real musical encyclopaedia, citing , Ray Charles and among her influences.

PRIYA RAGU THURSDAY 8 JULY Born in to Sri Lankan parents, Priya Ragu has shaped a cosmopolitan R&B sound, both old school and very modern, with touches of her Tamil heritage. Signed to Warner in Great Britain, the Swiss sensation is gaining a lot of attention internationally, picked up by the BBC and the New York Times in particular. While waiting for her debut album, you can listen to her singles produced with her brother Japhna Gold: the dance number “Gold Love 2.0” or the poignant “Forgot About”.

YSEULT TUESDAY 6 JULY Yseult, the emotional heiress of French chanson, likes to shake things up. Between the urban phrasing of trap and the lyricism of French chanson, her new EP Brut is an explosion of sincerity delivered without pretence. “Brut” is also the name of this piano- vocal tour, centred on Yseult’s disarming lyrics and the delicate interpretation of her pianist Nino Vela.

STEAM DOWN MONDAY 5 JULY Steam Down was originally the name of a night that electrified South East every week. Gradually, the buzz that grew around the collective formed a following. Led by multi- instrumentalist Ahnansé, the group is due to release their first EP this year, after a handful of singles combining jazz, soul and hip-hop. 55TH MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL 12 2-17 JULY 2021 - MJF.CH

Petit Théâtre On this stage, groove is king. Dedicated to jazz and soul music, the second ticketed stage for this year’s Festival, with a seated capacity of 200, will be located in the grand Salle des Fêtes at the Montreux Palace

CRYSTAL MURRAY SUNDAY 4 JULY At the age of 19, this Parisian singer-songwriter has already created an innovative sound. Her first EP, I Was Wrong, demonstrates her versatility by drawing on her love of soul and R’n’B while exploring house and techno sounds. The daughter of an African-American jazzman, Crystal Murray spent her childhood surrounded by the melodies of , Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. She first came to prominence in the fashion world with her Instagrammable Gucci Gang collective, but it soon became obvious: Crystal Murray has music in her blood, soul in her voice and the artistic audacity of a future great.

RAUL MIDÓN FRIDAY 2 JULY One man, one voice, one guitar, but it's as if a whole orchestra had taken over the stage. A classical guitarist and flamenco virtuoso who can turn his instrument into a kora or a bongo, the New Yorker indulges in everything, love songs with a heart-wrenching tone or imitating the sound of a trumpet in masterful vocal improvisations. From to Snoop Dogg, everyone has been blown away by this maestro, whose art subtly blends the major American popular music styles (blues and soul, jazz and R&B, etc.). Ten years after his concert in Montreux with Richard Bona, Raul Midón will open the festivities at the Montreux Jazz Club.

ROBBEN FORD & BILL EVANS TUESDAY 13 JULY Among the many things they have in common, guitarist Robben Ford and saxophonist Bill Evans both played with . For Ford, it even happened on stage at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1986. Listening to the duo’s 2019 album The Sun Room, it naturally becomes clear that they share much more than this illustrious line on their CVs. First and foremost, the same love for uninhibited jazz, flirting with blues, soul and rock. Among the most sought-after musicians of their generation, Robben Ford and Bill Evans have played with countless artists, most notably Joni Mitchell, John Scofield and for Robben Ford and Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin and Mick Jagger for Bill Evans. 55TH MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL 13 2-17 JULY 2021 - MJF.CH

GROOVIN' LONDON

It may well be in London that jazz is the coolest today! This new generation of musicians was born in the clubs of South London during the last decade, nourished as much by jazz college as by its encounters with the DJs, poets or rappers frequenting the same places. So much so that we no longer speak of a London scene, but of a community. Montreux had already welcomed some of its leaders, from Kamaal Williams to Shabaka Hutchings and Tom Misch. This summer's line-up includes the vibrant Steam Down and Nubiyan Twist collectives; saxophonist Nubya Garcia, a key player on the UK scene who is finally making her debut as a leader; keyboardist/rapper Alfa Mist and drummer Yussef Dayes, who recently released an album with Tom Misch. 55TH MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL 14 2-17 JULY 2021 - MJF.CH Free programme The free section of the 55th edition will be concentrated in two main areas: Les Jardins and the Grand Hall by MJAF.
