David Bishop Tour Summary Rockjumper’s inaugural tour of the islands of the Southwest Pacific kicked off in style with dinner at the Stamford Airport Hotel in Sydney, Australia. The following morning we were soon winging our way north and eastwards to the ancient Gondwanaland of New Caledonia. Upon arrival we then drove south along a road more reminiscent of Europe, passing through lush farmlands seemingly devoid of indigenous birds. Happily this was soon rectified; after settling into our Noumea hotel and a delicious luncheon, we set off to explore a small nature reserve established around an important patch of scrub and mangroves. Here we quickly cottoned on to our first endemic, the rather underwhelming Grey-eared Honeyeater, together with Nankeen Night Herons, a migrant Sacred Kingfisher, White-bellied Woodswallow, Fantailed Gerygone and the resident form of Rufous Whistler. As we were to discover throughout this tour, in areas of less than pristine habitat we encountered several Grey-eared Honeyeater by David Hoddinott introduced species including Common Waxbill. And so began a series of early starts which were to typify this tour, though today everyone was up with added alacrity as we were heading to the globally important Rivierre Bleu Reserve and the haunt of the incomparable Kagu. We drove 1.3 hours to the reserve, passing through a stark landscape before arriving at the appointed time to meet my friend Jean-Marc, the reserve’s ornithologist and senior ranger. -

Field Guides Tour Report Part I: New Caledonia Sep 5, 2011 to Sep 15, 2011 Phil Gregory The revamped tour was a little later this year and it seemed to make some things a bit easier, note how well we did with the rare Crow Honeyeater, and Kagu was as ever a standout. One first-year bird was rewarded with a nice juicy scorpion that our guide found, and this really is a fabulous bird to see, another down on Harlan's famiy quest, too, as an added bonus to what is a quite unique bird. Cloven-feathered Dove was also truly memorable, and watching one give that strange, constipated hooting call was fantastic and this really is one of the world's best pigeons. Air Calin did their best to make life hard with a somewhat late flight to Lifou, and I have to say the contrast with the Aussie pilots in Vanuatu was remarkable -- these French guys must still be learning as they landed the ATR 42's so hard and had to brake so fiercely! Still, it all worked out and the day trip for the Ouvea Parakeet worked nicely, whilst the 2 endemic white-eyes on Lifou were got really early for once. Nice food, an interesting Kanak culture, with a trip to the amazing Renzo Piano-designed Tjibaou Cultural Center also feasible this The fantastic Kagu, star of the tour! OConnor2 Abstract Background: The common waxbill, Estrilda astrild (L., 1758) (Passeriformes: Estrildidae) is a small passerine bird native to Sub-Saharan Africa that has been introduced into several regions of the world. Results: In the present paper, eight mite species (Acariformes) are reported from this host from Brazil, including three species new to science: Montesauria caravela n. sp., M. conquistador n. sp. (Proctophyllodidae), Trouessartia transatlantica n. sp., T. minuscula Gaud & Mouchet, 1958, T. estrildae Gaud & Mouchet, 1958 (Trouessartiidae), Onychalges pachyspathus Gaud, 1968 (Pyroglyphidae), Paddacoptes paddae (Fain, 1964) (Dermationidae) and Neocheyletiella megaphallos (Lawrence, 1959) (Cheyletidae). Comparative material from Africa was also studied. Conclusions: These mites represent at least three morpho-ecological groups regarding their microhabitats occupied on the bird: (i) vane mites (Montesauria and Trouessartia on the large wing and tail feathers); (ii) down mites (Onychalges); and (iii) skin mites (Paddacoptes and Neocheyletiella). On one bird individual we found representatives of all eight mite species. Although the common waxbill was introduced to the Neotropical region almost two centuries ago, we demonstrate that it still retains its Old World acarofauna and has not yet acquired any representatives of typical Neotropical mite taxa. DOUGLAS and S.M. EVANS Summary A rapid appraisal technique, using local people’s knowledge of bird life, was used to map the distribution and assess conservation needs of estrildid finches on Vanuatu. Most ni-Vanuatu, especially men, have good knowledge of the local bird fauna. Not surprisingly, therefore, there was close agreement between the distributions of finches predicted from the use of this technique and from field records of the birds. The data suggest that the ranges of two endemic subspecies, Royal Parrot Finch Erythrura cyanovirens regia and Blue-faced Parrot Finch Erythrura trichroa cyanofrons, have declined in recent years. Royal Parrot Finch, in particular, should be given high conservation priority. It now occupies a tiny global range and is believed to be particularly vulnerable to further habitat change. Introduction The Convention on Biological Diversity, which was signed at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (the Earth Summit) in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, presents a particular challenge to small island states. Many islands are spectacularly rich in biodiversity but their biotas are also fragile. They support high numbers of endemic and restricted-range species (Stattersfield et al. 1998) but, as a result of their small size, populations are highly vulnerable to either human-induced catastrophes, such as habitat destruction and the introduc- tion of alien invasive species, or natural ones, such as cyclones. -

DISPLAYS FACILITATING SOCIABILITY IN WAXBILLS OF THE GENERA ESTRILDA AND LAGONOSTICTA (FAM. ESTRILDIDAE) by PETER KUNKEL 1) (LR.S.A.C., Lwiro, Bukavu, Rép. Dém. du Congo) (Rec.9-XII-1966) There have been many studies on the behaviour of estrildid finches. Until now only a minor part (CHAPIN, GrOODWIN, 1959, 1060, 1962, IC?G3a, 1964, Ic?65; HARRISON, Ic?56, 1957, 1962a, b; HARRISON & DORMER, 1962; KUNKEL,, 1959, 1962, 1967; MORRIS, 1958; SPARKS, 1963, 1964) dealt with species of the waxbill tribe (Estrildae resp. Estrildini) as defined by ÐELA- coup (1943). In some of these species peculiar displays occur between birds, mostly of different sex but not mated or even not known to each other. Some of these displays, observed in encounters of birds not known to each other, were described by HARRISON (1962a) under the term of 'recognition postures'. Similar displays were also described by KUNKEL (1959). The present paper deals comparatively with this behaviour complex in the greater part of the species of the genus Estrilda and in two species of the genus L agonosticta. Both genera are fairly related to each other, but differ in the degree of gregariousness and sexual dimorphism. In relation to this, the displays under discussion have also developed differently. Those of Lagonosticta have remained more primitive and nearly or wholly unritualised and offer therefore good possibilities of comparison. A. THE SPECIES OBSERVED AND SYSTEMATIC REMARKS There are to many different arrangements of the waxbills that the two genera, as used here, should be defined shortly. 1) Acknowledgements. The first point to consider is that, provided their environment and diet are satisfactory, finches want to breed. If nest boxes or baskets are not pro vided then they will go ahead and build their own nest, much as they would in the wild. In fact many species will happily ignore provided artificial nest sites and do their own thing any way. Thus in a finch aviary you can reasonably expect your finches to try to breed, and it i this breeding activi ty which leads to many of the compat ibility problems that can arise. These problems can be divided into two main areas, hybridization and competition.
