In this short editorial coda, I cannot do justice to all of the responses, even though each is valuable and instructive. I should like, first of all, brieflyto review each contribution. In the remainder of what I have to say, I shall then respond in more general terms about the nature of the overall project of reading his- torical women philosophers as part of the republican tradition, with the aim of tackling what I consider to be some misconceptions. In so doing, I will address myself mostly to Karen Green’s[2021] article which is the most sceptical about the endeavour, although I shall also engage with Lena Halldenius [2021]. -

Edgeworth was an innovative writer of nu- merous tales and novellas for children and young people, whose work was enjoyed by generations of juvenile readers from the late eighteenth until the early twentieth century. She was also the author of Practical Education (1798), an important manual on early education that broke away from the speculative approach of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the class-specificity of John Locke (both of whom focused their efforts on the education of boys) to create an experimental, scientific pedagogy, based on observa- tions and anecdotes drawn from the experience of bringing up real girls and boys (eight of her half-siblings from her father’s third marriage).1 Edgeworth’s prolific writing for and about children was grounded in a sympathy for young people strengthened by her own turmoil in early childhood: she lost her mother when she was five years old, and her father (a virtual stranger to her) remar- ried within a few months. -

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ABSTRACT 3 ABSTRACT During the course of the nineteenth century children’s early reading experience was radically transformed; late eighteenth-century children were expected to cut their teeth on morally improving texts, while Victorian children learned to read more playfully through colourful picturebooks. This thesis explores the reasons for this paradigm change through a study of the key developments in children’s publishing from 1783 to 1900. Successively examining an amateur author, a commercial publisher, an innovative editor, and a brilliant illustrator with a strong interest in progressive theories of education, the thesis is alive to the multiplicity of influences on children’s reading over the century. Chapter One outlines the scope of the study. Chapter Two focuses on Ellenor Fenn’s graded dialogues, Cobwebs to catch flies (1783), initially marketed as part of a reading scheme, which remained in print for more than 120 years. Fenn’s highly original method of teaching reading through real stories, with its emphasis on simple words, large type, and high-quality pictures, laid the foundations for modern nursery books. Chapter Three examines John Harris, who issued a ground- breaking series of colour-illustrated rhyming stories and educational books in the 1810s, marketed as ‘Harris’s Cabinet of Amusement and Instruction’. -

Jessica Wen Hui Lim August 2018 ii Lessons after Barbauld: the Conversational Primer in Late-Eighteenth- Century Britain This thesis explores how Anna Letitia Barbauld’s book Lessons for Children Aged Two to Three Years (1778) facilitated the development of the conversational primer. This genre, which has not yet been theorised, may be identified by the way the texts present themselves as verisimilar and replicable sets of conversations, and depict parent-teachers and child-pupils as companions. This genre challenges the idea that there is a dichotomy between ‘adult’ and ‘child’ readers, a concept that inflects many contemporary approaches to children’s literature studies. Through a close reading of Lessons for Children and subsequent conversational primers, this thesis suggests that Barbauld’s Rational Dissenting value of discursive diversity influenced British middle-class children’s culture, enabling the voices of verisimilar children to proliferate children’s books on a previously unknown scale. -

About Us Masthead This book could have begun with a variant of my favorite opening line--from Steven Shapin's The Scientific Revolution (1996): "There was no such thing as [Romanticism], and this is a book about it." As Gay's prologue notes, "if there were Feedback German romantics and French romantics, they did not start from the same initial impulse, did not develop the same cultural expressions in their literature and their art" (xii-xiii). Proposing, then, to talk of romanticisms--the plural is used throughout the book, as in most discussions of romanticism(s) these days--he treats the movement as a "large . far-flung family" (19) rather than as homogeneous. Gay nonetheless finds certain shared preoccupations, primarily in French and German literature, visual art, and music between the late eighteenth century and the mid-twentieth century. Peter Gay died at 91 in 2015, the year this book was published. Not surprisingly, since his thirty-some previous books have covered Weimar, Freud, the Enlightenment, and Modernism, a good deal of this new book highlights modernity and modernism with some glances back at the eighteenth century. Thus he tacitly argues that the romanticisms he explores not only emerged from the Enlightenment but also persisted well into the twentieth century. As Gay concludes in a brief epilogue, twentieth-century novelists, poets, composers, painters, dramatists, and architects "lived off the [romantic] past" (116), suggesting that modernity is a cluster of romanticisms under a different name. -

The Romantic Poetry Handbook
The Romantic Poetry Handbook This comprehensive survey of British Romantic poetry explores the work of six poets whose names are most closely associated with the Romantic era – Wordsworth, Coleridge, Blake, Keats, Byron, and Shelley – as well as works by other significant but less widely studied poets such as Leigh Hunt, Charlotte Smith, Felicia Hemans, and Letitia Elizabeth Landon. It brought Covid-19 to all of us, alongside a quarantine life and a world-wide pandemic. But there is always hope, and it now (fingers crossed!) looks like the country has managed to flatten, if not drop the curve, entirely. The month of May also brings us the three holidays of Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day. Each is significant to us for different and special reasons. Cinco de Mayo, of course, is known for being a festive holiday, celebrating Mexican heritage and the significant role it plays in our own country. And since everyone has a mother, Mother’s Day is a truly meaningful holiday that has a special resonance for each of us. Whether you are celebrating the memory of your mother, or are a mother yourself, or are celebrating alongside your mother, it’s a holiday of deep emotional meaning. And finally, while Memorial Day can sometimes be a more somber holiday, it’s especially important to honor and remember those military members who have sacrificed and died Memory Care residents while serving our country. And let’s never forget that it is also a day to celebrate the life enjoying good books and we now live because of what these men and women did for us.
