In Search of Robert Lovell: Poet and Pantisocrat I. Introduction ‘At the close of the year 1794, a clever young man, of the Society of Friends, of the name of Robert Lovell, who had married a Miss Fricker, informed me that a few friends of his from Oxford and Cambridge, with himself, were about to sail to America, and, on the banks of the Susquehannah, to form a Social Colony, in which there was to be a community of property, and where all that was selfish was to be proscribed.’1 Thus wrote Bristol publisher Joseph Cottle in his Reminiscences published in 1847. As any serious student of Romanticism knows, the most important of those ‘few friends’ mentioned by Cottle were Robert Southey and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who were then gathering support for a small-scale transatlantic emigration scheme founded on radical egalitarian or so-called ‘Pantisocratic’ principles. It is chiefly in connection with this utopian venture that the ‘clever young man’ described by Cottle has, until now, typically featured in Romantic criticism, very much in a supporting if not peripheral role. But how much do we know about Robert Lovell? What kind of person was he? Why did Southey, and subsequently Coleridge, embrace him enthusiastically on first acquaintance and later downgrade their estimate of his qualities? What was Lovell’s achievement as a poet, and what was his place in the early history of Romanticism in the South West? In this essay I attempt to answer these questions by re- examining established ‘facts’, gathering fresh evidence, and treating Lovell and his poetry as valid subjects in their own right rather than as a footnote to the budding careers of Coleridge and Southey. -

“When I Have Fears That I May Cease to Be” John Keats John Keats (p. 788) (1795-1821) Those who leave a lasting imprint on the world do not always live long. When the life of a groundbreaking figure is cut short, it leaves the world asking, What more might this person have achieved, if only he or she had lived longer? John Keats is such a figure. Although he died at age twenty-five, Keats left his indelible mark on literature, and this makes us wonder what more he might have accomplished had he lived longer. A Defender of Worthy Causes Unlike his contemporaries Bryon and Shelley, John Keats was not an aristocrat. Instead, he was born to working-class Londoners. As a child, he received attention for his striking good looks and his restless spirit. Keats developed a reputation for fighting, but always for a worthy cause. It was not until he and his school-master’s son, Charles Cowden Clarke, became friends that Keats developed an interest in poetry and became an avid reader. From Medicine to Poetry In 1815, Keats began studying medicine at a London hospital. He had already begun writing poetry, but he earned his pharmacist’s license before abandoning medicine for the literary world. In 1818, he published his first major work, Endymion, a long poem that critics panned. Their negative reviews were due in part to Keats’s association with the radical writer Leigh Hunt. The reviews also reflected the uneven quality of the verse itself. Despite the critical rejection, Keats did not swerve from his new career. -
Novalis's Magical Idealism
Symphilosophie International Journal of Philosophical Romanticism Novalis’s Magical Idealism A Threefold Philosophy of the Imagination, Love and Medicine Laure Cahen-Maurel* ABSTRACT This article argues that Novalis’s philosophy of magical idealism essentially consists of three central elements: a theory of the creative or productive imagination, a conception of love, and a doctrine of transcendental medicine. In this regard, it synthesizes two adjacent, but divergent contemporary philosophical sources – J. G. Fichte’s idealism and Friedrich Schiller’s classicism – into a new and original philosophy. It demonstrates that Novalis’s views on both magic and idealism, not only prove to be perfectly rational and comprehensible, but even more philosophically coherent and innovative than have been recognised up to now. Fichte, Schiller RÉSUMÉ Cet article défend l’idée selon laquelle trois éléments centraux composent ce que Novalis nomme « idéalisme magique » pour désigner sa philosophie propre : la conception d’une imagination créatrice ou productrice, une doctrine de l’amour et une théorie de la médecine transcendantale. L’idéalisme magique est en cela la synthèse en une philosophie nouvelle et originale de deux sources philosophiques contemporaines, à la fois adjacentes et divergentes : l’idéalisme de J. G. Fichte et le classicisme de Friedrich Schiller. L’article montre que les vues de Novalis tant sur la magie que sur l’idéalisme sont non seulement réellement rationnelles et compréhensibles, mais philosophiquement plus cohérentes et novatrices qu’on ne l’a admis jusqu’à présent. Especially unfortunate for a collection on textuality, the essays are marred by typographical errors (“David Scan Kastan”, “feministm”, “Sommer- ville College”, “modem” for “modern”, “arid” for “and”). ;WUMWN \PMÅZ[\[M\WN ¹[MUQVITºM[[Ia[[PW_\PMQZIOMJ]\QV[WUM ways this is one of the pleasures in reading the volume. McGann’s essay from 1985 asks, “What is the relevance of textual and bibliographical stud- ies to literary intepretation?” and asserts “This is not a question that has been posed in a systematic way very often”. These statements would be unthinkable in the recent essays in the collection, a change due in a large part to McGann’s own work over the last two decades. He suggests that, faced by the same textual feature, literary historians and editors ask differ- ent questions. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ABSTRACT 3 ABSTRACT During the course of the nineteenth century children’s early reading experience was radically transformed; late eighteenth-century children were expected to cut their teeth on morally improving texts, while Victorian children learned to read more playfully through colourful picturebooks. This thesis explores the reasons for this paradigm change through a study of the key developments in children’s publishing from 1783 to 1900. Successively examining an amateur author, a commercial publisher, an innovative editor, and a brilliant illustrator with a strong interest in progressive theories of education, the thesis is alive to the multiplicity of influences on children’s reading over the century. Chapter One outlines the scope of the study. Chapter Two focuses on Ellenor Fenn’s graded dialogues, Cobwebs to catch flies (1783), initially marketed as part of a reading scheme, which remained in print for more than 120 years. Fenn’s highly original method of teaching reading through real stories, with its emphasis on simple words, large type, and high-quality pictures, laid the foundations for modern nursery books. Chapter Three examines John Harris, who issued a ground- breaking series of colour-illustrated rhyming stories and educational books in the 1810s, marketed as ‘Harris’s Cabinet of Amusement and Instruction’. -

Cosmos and History: The Journal of Natural and Social Philosophy, vol. 15, no. 1, 2019 BEFORE HEGEL: SCHILLER, NOVALIS, AND THE CONCEPT OF AUFHEBUNG Hammam Aldouri ABSTRACT: Philosophical explorations of the concept of Aufhebung (sublation, supersession) immediately prior to its formulation in Hegel’s work have remained relatively absent within the context of both Hegel scholarship and German Idealism studies. Hegel is often simply represented as the originator of the concept and the latter is understood almost exclusively within his oeuvre. This essay addresses this lack by offering an exposition of the notion as it unfolds in two works from 1795-1796: Friedrich Schiller’s Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man and Novalis’ Fichte Studies. In these works, we find distinctive examinations of Aufhebung understood as the name of a process in which a subject comprehends itself in relation to its own processual development. My guiding premise is that without an adequate comprehension of the way in which Aufhebung is constructed and comprehended in the last years of the eighteenth century, we cannot establish the vantage point from which to reconstruct Hegel’s early conception of the notion, a conception which begins to emerge in his earliest Frankfurt writings in 1797, as a contribution to the constellation of post-Kantian conceptions.
