The era of star architects... The Architecture Biennale in Venice brought a new insight into the status quo of architecture. To put it simply, we can only state that there is an end to the so-called star architects. By reference to the Time Magazine cover, Rem Koolhaas made evident in his contribution (on architectural preservation) that Philip Johnson was, in 1979, the last architect to be considered an important public character. His comment: “Star architects accepted a Faustian bargain where they became more prominent, but their role less significant”.

…is coming to its end. While reviewing the Biennale 2010, Dietmar Steiner writes on www.standard.at that the Biennale 1980, curated by Paolo Portoghesi, created the notion of the architect as star in a manifesto-like way. In 2010, so Dietmar Steiner says, Kazuo Sejima closes the era of star architects with her Biennale. According to Wikipedia, Star architect designates a media phenomenon but not an architectural one. What conclusions can be drawn therefrom? We hope:

Clearing the ground for an interdisciplinary discourse in architecture Collaboration of disciplines leads to astonishing team buildings and astonishing performances. The monopolisation of authorship is no longer the most important thing. We experience firsthand how much our society has to struggle with some topics to preserve our future: ecology, new poverty, integration are the driving issues in architecture, too.

Raimund Abraham He realised this very early. Already in the early 1960ies, he opened up architecture to anonymous architecture and brought it into the theoretical discourse. Raimund Abraham’s monograph [UN]BUILT was Springer’s first architecture book. It was released in 1995, Abraham had designed it mainly himself and insisted on watching the printing. He unfortunately didn’t live to see the revised new edition by Brigitte Groihofer. In early 2010, he tragically died in a car-crash.

Landscape and book art GAM 07 addresses the interaction between landscape design and society determined by non-designed landscape. It is a momentous contribution to the discourse on landscape. As of 2010, the im:print annual is published by Springer; it should be warmly recommended to any designers who have to do with printing, book art, and art publications!

Finally, other important information: springerarchitektur.at has gone online. Our portal is still under construction but – if you are an architect – you may already find there an article about yourself ...
