The Architecture Biennale in Venice brought a new insight into the status quo of architecture. To put it simply, we can only state that there is an end to the so-called star architects. By reference to the Time Magazine cover, Rem Koolhaas made evident in his contribution (on architectural preservation) that Philip Johnson was, in 1979, the last architect to be considered an important public character. His comment: “Star architects accepted a Faustian bargain where they became more prominent, but their role less significant”. …is coming to its end. While reviewing the Biennale 2010, Dietmar Steiner writes on www.standard.at that the Biennale 1980, curated by Paolo Portoghesi, created the notion of the architect as star in a manifesto-like way. In 2010, so Dietmar Steiner says, Kazuo Sejima closes the era of star architects with her Biennale. According to Wikipedia, Star architect designates a media phenomenon but not an architectural one. What conclusions can be drawn therefrom? We hope: Clearing the ground for an interdisciplinary discourse in architecture Collaboration of disciplines leads to astonishing team buildings and astonishing performances. The monopolisation of authorship is no longer the most important thing. We experience firsthand how much our society has to struggle with some topics to preserve our future: ecology, new poverty, integration are the driving issues in architecture, too. Raimund Abraham He realised this very early. Already in the early 1960ies, he opened up architecture to anonymous architecture and brought it into the theoretical discourse. Raimund Abraham’s monograph [UN]BUILT was Springer’s first architecture book. It was released in 1995, Abraham had designed it mainly himself and insisted on watching the printing. He unfortunately didn’t live to see the revised new edition by Brigitte Groihofer. In early 2010, he tragically died in a car-crash. Landscape and book art GAM 07 addresses the interaction between landscape design and society determined by non-designed landscape. It is a momentous contribution to the discourse on landscape. As of 2010, the im:print annual is published by Springer; it should be warmly recommended to any designers who have to do with printing, book art, and art publications! Finally, other important information: springerarchitektur.at has gone online. Our portal is still under construction but – if you are an architect – you may already find there an article about yourself ... CENTER FOR AUSTRIAN STUDIES AUSTRIAN STUDIES NEWSLETTER Vol. 16, No. 1 Spring 2004 Barbara Krauss-Christensen retires by Daniel Pinkerton For 26 years—through changes of directors, location, financing, and scholarly mission—the one constant at the Center for Austrian Stud- ies has been Barbara Krauss-Christensen, our executive secretary. On July 1, 2004, she will retire, marking the end of an era, and changing CAS forever. Krauss-Christensen arrived at the Center in the fall of 1978, one year after its founding, an M.A. in German in hand. “Barbara was the rock upon which the Center was founded,” William Wright, the Cen- ter’s founding director, asserted. “She had little to work with in those lean, early days, but she never faltered or fretted. She was always there, ready to see to the welfare and mission of the Center. In later years, after prosperity brought many more people into the office, it would be easy to forget how Barbara had carried the load quite alone for many years.” Over the years, Krauss-Christensen learned more than any direc- tor or visitor possibly could about the ins and outs of university and government paperwork—visas, reimbursement forms, budgeting, and the like. “While directors have come and gone, it has been Barbara who has held the Center together and has maintained an institutional memory better and more reliably than any computer,” according to former CAS interim director Gerhard Weiss. “If it had not been for the reassurance of Barbara’s presence, I never would have accepted the Center’s interim directorship.” “Her fierce loyalty to the Center and its mission, and her willingness to put in long hours were major factors in the Center’s success,” for- mer director David Good maintains.

  • Roland Rainer. (Un)Disputed a New Look at the Work (1936–1963) Sammlungslab #3
Roland Rainer. (Un)Disputed A New Look at the Work (1936–1963) SammlungsLab #3 Exhibition: 20.10 – 10.12.2018, Gallery Press conference: Fri 19.10, 11:00 Opening: Fri 19.10, 19:00 At least since the study commissioned by the City of Vienna of person-related street signs, where Roland-Rainer-Platz is categorised as "a case requiring discussion", issues have arisen around the gaps the architect himself left in his biography during the Nazi period. Roland Rainer (1910–2004) numbers among the most notable Austrian architects of the 20th century. His buildings are key to the identity of modern democratic Austria. Rainer's housing estate concept for the "structured and dispersed city" is still considered the most important model of space-saving, low-level housing. During the Nazi period, Rainer acquired his knowledge of fundamental urban research at the Deutsche Akademie für Städtebau, Reichs- und Landesplanung, which served him after 1945 as the basis for a series of theoretical publications. The continuity of the concepts in Rainer's work and his professional career suggest his flexibility in adapting to different political systems. He left only a rudimentary commentary on the Nazi years in his own biographical accounts, and many questions open. The acquisition of Roland Rainer's estate by the Az W in 2015 has provided an opportunity to re-examine his oeuvre and his biography. The focus is on the period from 1936, when Rainer left for Berlin, until 1963, the year he resigned his position with the City of Vienna planning department. In the third edition of the SammlungsLab series of exhibitions, in cooperation with the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, the first findings of extensive research in archives in Austria and abroad are presented and discussed in an accompanying international symposium.

  • Tackling Eco-Urbanity: Housing and Placemaking at the Urban Edge
ITU A|Z VOL: 7 NO: 2, 163-184 2010-2 Tackling eco-urbanity: Housing and placemaking at the urban edge A.Senem DEVİREN Istanbul Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, Istanbul, TURKEY Received: September 2010 Final Acceptance: Novermber 2010 Abstract: With more than half of the world population is now living in urban settlements, urban growth is almost inevitable. But our cities are not growing in healthier and ecological ways, they are ‘sprawling’. Much of this sprawl is a result of new housing developments and constructions for their related services, occurring rapidly one after the other at urban peripheries. There are several principles and guidelines offered for ‘ecologic’ urban planning and ‘eco’ or ‘green’ building design. However, most of these guidelines are rigid, contemporary market-driven and global ‘checklists’ with no ability to inform local urban design and interdisciplinary practice and polarizing the differences in design disciplines with their incompetent content that is far from addressing the symbolically, ecologically and functionally powered interrelations between built environments and nature. This paper addresses ecological housing design and planning at urban edges by proposing an updated urban design strategy –the placemaking strategy- and testing its role in monitoring eco-urban development with actual case studies on two ecological settlements at the urban edge of Linz, Austria. The study investigates and highlights the importance of architecture and landscape combined comprehensive urban design strategy to preserve land, prevent consumption in all terms, to utilize the on-site resources, and use of renewable energy sources, to improve functional and social performance of urban contexts at urban edges and maintain healthy living conditions for the inhabitants for longer term goals of livability and sustainability.
