THE EARLS OF DALHOUSIE WHO WERE ALSO MEMBERS OF THE MOST ANCIENT AND MOST NOBLE ORDER OF THE THISTLE (from Dennis Hurt and Wayne R. Premo) In 2017, Dennis Hurt (Clan member #636) and his Lady Susan, who are avid participants in the Colorado Scottish / Celtic Festivals each year, traveled to the United Kingdom as many of us have over these past decades. While visiting Scotland and particularly Edinburgh, they decided to “take in” St. Giles High Kirk (Kirk meaning Church; or High Kirk meaning Cathedral, in this case) which is located on High Street (The Royal Mile) in Old Town Edinburgh. St. Giles Cathedral or High Kirk of Edinburgh is THE principal place of worship of the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh (Wikipedia online). St. Giles High Kirk today – The Royal Mile – Edinburgh While online websites have a great deal of information with photos about St. Giles High Kirk, what is important to this narrative is the fact that the Thistle Chapel, a section therein, was dedicated in 1911 to the Most AnCient anD Most Noble OrDer oF the Thistle, SCotlanD’s Foremost OrDer oF Chivalry. Again from Wikipedia: “The Most AnCient anD Most Noble OrDer oF the Thistle is an order of chivalry associated with Scotland. The current version of the Order was founded in 1687 by King James VII 1 of ScotlanD (James II of England and Ireland) who asserted that he was reviving an earlier Order. The Order consists of the Sovereign and sixteen Knights and Ladies, as well as certain "extra" knights (members of the British Royal Family and foreign monarchs).

********************************************************************************* GENEALOGISTS FOR THE SCOTTISH CLANS by Robert D. McLaren 7810 Kincardine Court Alexandria, VA 22315-4025 (703) 971-6924 [email protected] 8 April 2000 Version 2000-3 © Copyright 2000 Robert D. McLaren The following list is a compilation of Clan Genealogists or Clan points of contact for genealogy (for the Scottish Clans and Family Associations). The amount of information available from these genealogists varies greatly, with some having extensive records. For example, the clan genealogist for Clan Scott maintains a database of all SCOTTs and is a coordinator of the SCOTT One Name Society. He has about 53,000 records on file dealing with more than 2,000 family lines. The clan genealogist/historian for Clan Barclay also is a coordinator for the BARCLAY One Name Society. She has about 19,000 BARCLAY/BARKLEY and collateral names on file dealing with 125 family lines. The Clan Morrison historian has a 6,000-name database of MORRISON families in the U.S. and Canada. Some clans have genealogy committees. When I learn about them I will include committee members in this listing. Some of these members only cover one or a few states. In these cases, I note the states that particular member covers. Also, some clan genealogists specialize in one surname of a clan. Clan MacKay, for example, has many surname genealogists. I am listing these surnames under the parent clan with a note (i.e., See also Mackie). The actual genealogist and his/her address will be listed under the surname (i.e., Mackie). For some clans, more than one society exists.

  • William Harvey's Anatomy Book and Literary Culture
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by PubMed Central Medical History, 2008, 52: 73–91 William Harvey’s Anatomy Book and Literary Culture MARJORIE O’ROURKE BOYLE* Ora et labora: the Benedictine motto unfurls on the banderole of the title-page of William Harvey’s masterful Exercitatio anatomica de motu cordis et sanguinis in animal- ibus (1628).1 This monastic motto, ‘‘Pray and work’’, seems an odd advertisement for an anatomy book. Harvey submitted his manuscript for publication to William Fitzer in Frankfurt, who commissioned it to one of the eight printers licensed by the Frankfurter Rat, ‘‘mediocre craftsmen’’ all. The sorry product was a limited edition marred by typo- graphical errors, usually blamed on Harvey’s notoriously bad handwriting, an ‘‘atrocious, crabbed hand’’, which necessitated the later printing of errata. De motu cordis et sanguinis has been judged ‘‘a rather badly produced book’’, with most extant copies on thin paper in ordinary type.2 It has been supposed that to compensate for the brevity of the seemingly unimportant book its publisher provided ‘‘a handsome title-page’’.3 But its title-page is homely in comparison with Fitzer’s lavish title-pages for Harvey’s colleague Robert Fludd, whose Pulsus, the second part of his Medicina catholica, was the first printed agreement with Harvey’s theory of the circulation of the blood. Or, consider the impressive volume from Fitzer for Harvey’s rival Andre´ Du Laurens, Opera omnia anatomica et medica, which Harvey cites a year later in his own modest book.
