  • Colonel Arren Calvin Buchanan, Jr. INTERVIEWER
INSTITUTE OF TEXAN CULTURES ORAL HISTORY PROGRAM INTERVIEW WITH: Colonel Arren Calvin Buchanan, Jr. INTERVIEWER: Jim Sweeney DATE: January 19, 1985 PLACE: Air Force Village, San Antonio, Texas TITLE: The Scots in Texas Clan Buchanan (Society in America, Inc.) [Music is playing at the beginning of the tape: bagpipes.) S: Colonel Buchanan, I understand you are of Scottish descent and also a third generation Texan. Now that's quite a combination. Would you mind telling us a little bit about that? B: Yes, I'll be happy to, Jim. My great-grandfather, James Buchanan of Alabama, came with Stephen F. Austin's fifth colony, 1835, to what became Washington-on-the-Brazos. He was a farmer and built a log cabin down in Montgomery County. And he then was drafted into the Texas Army with General Sam Houston; and was subsequently killed in the Battle of the Alamo. And you will find his name, James Buchanan, of Alabama, on the north wall of the Alamo. His widow was given a grant of l a nd in 1844 by the Republic of Texas; and the grant was signed by Presiden t Sam Houston. My father was born on this grant of land, below Caldwe ll, in 1862, the son of James Houston Buchanan, BUCHANAN 2 B: the grandson of James Buchanan. So, therefore, we have roots that go back into early Texas history. Many of the Stephen F. Austin's colonists, as you see this was the fifth colony, were Scottish that carne across from the Ea st Coast. Another important colony which should be mentioned is the Sterling C.

  • The Sinclair Macphersons
Clan Macpherson, 1215 - 1550 How the Macphersons acquired their Clan Lands and Independence Reynold Macpherson, 20 January 2011 Not for sale, free download available from www.reynoldmacpherson.ac.nz Clan Macpherson, 1215 to 1550 How the Macphersons acquired their traditional Clan Lands and Independence Reynold Macpherson Introduction The Clan Macpherson Museum (see right) is in the village of Newtonmore, near Kingussie, capital of the old Highland district of Badenoch in Scotland. It presents the history of the Clan and houses many precious artifacts. The rebuilt Cluny Castle is nearby (see below), once the home of the chief. The front cover of this chapter is the view up the Spey Valley from the memorial near Newtonmore to the Macpherson‟s greatest chief; Col. Ewan Macpherson of Cluny of the ‟45. Clearly, the district of Badenoch has long been the home of the Macphersons. It was not always so. This chapter will make clear how Clan Macpherson acquired their traditional lands in Badenoch. It means explaining why Clan Macpherson emerged from the Old Clan Chattan, was both a founding member of the Chattan Confederation and yet regularly disputed Clan Macintosh‟s leadership, why the Chattan Confederation expanded and gradually disintegrated and how Clan Macpherson gained its property and governance rights. The next chapter will explain why the two groups played different roles leading up to the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The following chapter will identify the earliest confirmed ancestor in our family who moved to Portsoy on the Banff coast soon after the battle and, over the decades, either prospered or left in search of new opportunities.

The Scottish Nebraskan Newsletter of the Prairie Scots Chief’s Message Summer 2021 Issue I am delighted that summer is upon us finally! For a while there I thought winter was making a comeback. I hope this finds you all well and excited to get back to a more normal lifestyle. We are excited as we will finally get to meet in person for our Annual Meeting and Gathering of the Clans in August and hope you all make an effort to come. We haven't seen you all in over a year and a half and we are looking forward to your smiling faces and a chance to talk with all of you. Covid-19 has been rough on all of us; it has been a horrible year plus. But the officers of the Society have been meeting on a regular basis trying hard to keep the Society going. Now it is your turn to come and get involved once again. After all, a Society is not a society if we don't gather! Make sure to mark your calendar for August 7th, put on your best Tartan and we will see you then. As Aye, Helen Jacobsen Gathering of the Clans :an occasion when a large group of family or friends meet, especially to enjoy themselves e.g., Highland Games. • The Scottish Society of Indianapolis from the Desk of the President
The Scottish Society of Indianapolis Fall Edition, September - November 2015 2015 Board of Trustees Robin Jarrett, President, [email protected] Steven Johnson, Treasurer [email protected] From the desk of the President Elisabeth Hedges, Secretary Fellow Scots, [email protected] The Society is having a great year. We have been preparing for the upcoming festival season in which we will make many appearances. You may already know Carson C Smith, Trustee that the practice of setting up a Society booth is how we perpetuate our charter, [email protected] educating the public in “Gach ni Albanach” (all things Scottish). It also helps the public become aware that there is a Scottish Community and people of Scottish Andy Thompson, Trustee descent living in the Indianapolis and metro areas. This often surprises people when [email protected] they hear it. It is a special experience to point out to visitors that their last name is indeed Scottish, to show their name in the COSCA book and help them find their tartan. Many of our ancestors moved to America so long ago, our heritage has been Samuel Lawson,Trustee forgotten. I’m sure over time we’ve inspired more than one person to pursue their [email protected] roots and to trace their own family’s path across the sea. Armand Hayes, Trustee Volunteering time in our Society booth is a great way to learn while you educate. [email protected] Members who haven’t manned the tent before can sign up for the same slots with others who have, and learn that it’s a rewarding and easy thing to do.
