1/31/2011 Clan Montgomery History CLAN MONTGOMERY SOCIETY Home | Database | Links | Join | Officers | Games | AGM | Shop | News | Guestbook | About Clan Montgomery History History | Symbols | Migrations | Prayer A Thousand Year Tradition Clan Montgomery is one of the oldest Scottish Clans, and its Chronicles are closely interwoven with Scottish history. The progenitors of this Clan were Norman and came from the Castle of Sainte Foy de Montgomery, near Lissieux, Normandy, France. Roger de Montgomery arrived in England with his kinsman, William the Conqueror, in 1066. In 1069 Roger was granted lands on the Welsh border in the County which later took his name, Montgomeryshire. In 1083 he built Shrewsbury Abbey where he is entombed. According to the Doomsday Book, in 1086 he owned 150 castles and lordships within ten counties of England. Roger's grandson Robert de Montgomery, went to Scotland with Walter FitzAlan, also of the Welsh border country, who became High Steward of Scotland and progenitor of the great Stewart Clan. Robert was granted lands by King David I of Scotland in Renfrewshire, and the manor of Eaglesham became the Clan seat of the Montgomerys for many centuries. From 1165 to 1177 the name of Montgomery is mentioned in many grants and Charters, and the Clan territories expanded considerably. Sir John Montgomery, 7th Chief of the Clan, distinguished himself at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388 when he captured Harry Hotspur, Chief of the Percys. Percy's ransom was to build the Castle of Polnoon for Montgomery. John Montgomery later acquired the baronies of Eglinton and Androssan when he married the heiress daughter of Hugh Eglinton.

  • Connecting to Clan Montgomery
CONNECTING TO CLAN MONTGOMERY I grew up in a family of four girls - a middle child. My parents followed the Southern custom of naming their children for family members. My mother, Anna Withers Montgomery, had three sisters: Mary, Margaret, and Jane. My father, Carl Ruffin Pritchett had one sister: Dorothy. My two older sisters became Mary Anna and Peggy Jane. I became Dorothy Montgomery and my youngest sister became Elizabeth Withers. I loved my Montgomery middle name and felt part of a larger family -Clan Montgomery. Mama-Anna Withers Montgomery Pritchett-And Daughters Top: Mary Anna, Peggy Jane. Botton:Elizabeth Withers, Dorothy Montgomery Uncle, Hugh Reid Montgomery, often spoke about Clan Montgomery and was the Chaplain of Clan Montgomery Society International for many years. I loved seeing him wear his Montgomery tartan tie. His wife, Martha, wore a Montgomerytartan skirt, and sash to clan gatherings. They wore pins with the clan crest and Montgomery (also spelled Montgomerie in Scotland) motto: Gardez Bien (Look Well). The clan crestis rather gruesome – a woman holding an anchor in one hand and holding the hair of a savage’s head in the other hand. One source reasoned that the woman is considered a symbol of liberty, virtue, and victory of the weak over the strong in a just cause. The anchor is a symbol of good luck. • Short History of the Muirhead Clan.Pdf
ii iii ASHORT HISTORY OF THE MUIRHEAD CLAN Historians have noted that the family of Muirhead was one of the ancient families of the shire (i.e. county), of Lanark. According to Alexander Nisbet, in his book, A System Of Heraldry, published in 1742: “The Family of Muirheads of Lachop, or Muirhead of That-Ilk, has been always repute one of the ancientest Families in all the Shire of Lanerk.”... “The Sirname de Morehead, or Muirhead, is like other Sirnames of the greatest Antiquity, local, taken from Lands, from whence either the Proprietor took a Denomination, when fixed hereditary Sirnames became customary; or took an Appellation from the Lands, as soon as he obtained them; for it is a Maxim amongst Antiquaries, that ‘tis a sufficient Document of an ancient Descent, where the Inhabitant has the Sirname from the Place he inhabiteth.” 1 It was in the valley of the Clyde River, on the southern border of the highlands of Scotland, to the west of Edinburgh, and midway between it and Glasgow, in the Parish of Bothwell, in the Clydesdale county or shire of Lanark, that the lands of Lauchope and Lauchope House were located. And it was the estate of Lauchope that was first associated Photo of Lauchope House supplied by John Lindsay Morehead – Taken from 1925 with the name of Morehead family history in his possession. Muirhead. Reproduced by permission of the Trustees of the National Library of Scotland. In order for us to flesh out a history of this “Family of the Muirheads of Lachop”, we should begin by identifying a starting point when the family first became known to reside in Scotland.

  • Cumming Connections an Ancient Town in Belgium and a Present Day Baronetcy
umming, The Name And the Cumming Connections An Ancient Town in Belgium and a Present Day Baronetcy The Town Still Exists: Comines in Belgium Northwest of Lille, France C By Dave Cumming One day while in a writing class at Texas Christian University, my professor said to me “do you know you have an important Scottish name?” Professor Edwards had just returned from a trip to Canada in which she had encountered the Cumming Clan Tartan and Badge. For a young man who was having some difficulty in the class and with a very poor self- image, the words were curiously encouraging. I had often wondered about our name. Where did it come from? There didn’t seem to be a lot of them spelled the way we did. Oh, sure, I knew there was the poet E. E. Cummins and the TV and film actor Bob Cummings. But I didn’t run into many without the “s” on the end. Many years later, on a trip to Europe and the UK to visit my Uncle Herbert’s memorial in Belgium and Uncle Bob’s grave in England, I encountered a small town lying right on the French- Belgium border that once was part of Old Flanders named “Comines”. I didn’t know it then, but later I discovered there was a distinct connection that the name “Cumming” has to the locality of Comines dating back to the 11th Century and the Norman Conquest from which came a knight with William the Conqueror in 1066 named Robert de Comine. The Norman Invasion and the Battle of Hastings was one of those pivotal events in history that shaped the movement of people and is the source for many names in early England and Scotland.
