We just concluded another AWSOME AGM in Florida at the Central Highland Games. It was a wee bit cold, but we hearty Scots & our Viking constitution (along with a dram or two) hardly noticed! The tent was always busy, with lots of visitors, family & those who were there to become a part of our wonderful Clan. We signed 18 new or renewing Gunns. We also raised $1755.00 in the raffle for the Clan Gunn & Clan MacCallum - Malcolm Society Piping Scholarship! A great job by all! I would especially like to thank Howard H. Curran, Charlie & Alexie Kehm, Chuck & Jän Franz and Steve & Sandy Wilson. Also, thanks are in order to James Edward Smith. He not only was he helping host the tent, James represented Gunn in the heavy athletics as a competitor! We were also thankful to have our Clan’s Chaplain, Becky Robbins-Penniman at the Games. She gave the invocation for the Games, a very special honor for her & Clan Gunn, and blessed our meeting as well.

[Music is playing at the beginning of the tape: bagpipes.) S: Colonel Buchanan, I understand you are of Scottish descent and also a third generation Texan. Now that's quite a combination. Would you mind telling us a little bit about that? B: Yes, I'll be happy to, Jim. My great-grandfather, James Buchanan of Alabama, came with Stephen F. Austin's fifth colony, 1835, to what became Washington-on-the-Brazos. He was a farmer and built a log cabin down in Montgomery County. And he then was drafted into the Texas Army with General Sam Houston; and was subsequently killed in the Battle of the Alamo. And you will find his name, James Buchanan, of Alabama, on the north wall of the Alamo. His widow was given a grant of l a nd in 1844 by the Republic of Texas; and the grant was signed by Presiden t Sam Houston. My father was born on this grant of land, below Caldwe ll, in 1862, the son of James Houston Buchanan, BUCHANAN 2 B: the grandson of James Buchanan. So, therefore, we have roots that go back into early Texas history. Many of the Stephen F. Austin's colonists, as you see this was the fifth colony, were Scottish that carne across from the Ea st Coast. Another important colony which should be mentioned is the Sterling C.

It is therefore remarkable that their origins remain obscure. The name itself is territorial and it has been suggested that it originates form lands b Douglas Water received by a Flemish knight from the Abbey of Kelso. However, the first certain record of the name relates to a William de Dufglas who, between 1175 and 1199, witnessed charter by the Bishop of Glasgow to the monks of Kelso. Sir William de Douglas, believed to be the third head of the Borders family, had two sons who fought against the Norse at the Battle of Largs in 1263. William Douglas ‘The Hardy’ was governor of Berwick when the town was besieged by the English. Douglas was taken prisoner when the town fell and he was only released when he agreed to accept the claim of Edward I of England to be overlord of Scotland. He later joined Sir William Wallace in the struggle for Scottish independence but he was again captured and died in England in 1302.

    History of the Murrays The Murray’s trace their heritage back to the 12th Century and take their name from the great province of Moray, once a local kingdom. It was during this time that the Flemish lords crossed the North Sea and established themselves in the Scottish realm. Among them was Freskin, son of Ollec. Either Freskin or his son, William, intermarried with the ancient royal house of Moray. The senior line of the Murrays took the surname of Sutherland and became Earls of Sutherland in 1235.Thereafter, the chiefs of the Murrays were the Lords of Petty in Moray, who also became Lords of Bothwell in Clydesdale before 1253. An heir of this line, Sir Andrew Murray, was the brilliant young general who, along with William Wallace, led the Scots in 1297 intheir first uprising against the English conquerors. He was mortally-wounded while winning his famous victory at Stirling Bridge. His son, Sir Andrew Murray, 4th Lord of Bothwell, 3rd Regent of Scotland, married Christian Bruce, a sister of King Robert the Bruce. He was captured at Roxburgh early in 1333 and was a prisoner in England at the time of the battle of Halidon Hill. He obtained his freedom in time to march to the relief of his wife, who was bravely defending Kildrummy Castle. Sir Andrew commenced with unabated spirit to struggle in the cause of independence and died in 1338. The last Murray Lord of Bothwell died in 1360 of the plague. The chiefship of the Murray’s fell into doubt amongst the various scattered branches of the name — from Sutherland and Murray itself — through Perthshire and Stirlingshire to Annandale, and the Borders.
