Clan Hay Pipe Band played touchingly beautiful next to the big cross. Simon Louagie, historian of World War I, and specializing in Ypres history, explained to the participants about the last days of George Montgomery. Those present then went in cortège to the tomb of George Montgomery. Chev. Guy Fosté de Montgomery, representative of Count Hugh de Montgomery de Montgomery, laid down a wreath. After playin ‘ Flowers of the Forrest’, Clan Hay Pipe Band played ‘Amazing Grace’. This was a hugely emotional moment. Op de muziek van de Clan Hay Pipe Band namen alle Clans hun plaats in voor de Homage to a Hay. 1/31/2011 Clan Montgomery History CLAN MONTGOMERY SOCIETY Home | Database | Links | Join | Officers | Games | AGM | Shop | News | Guestbook | About Clan Montgomery History History | Symbols | Migrations | Prayer A Thousand Year Tradition Clan Montgomery is one of the oldest Scottish Clans, and its Chronicles are closely interwoven with Scottish history. The progenitors of this Clan were Norman and came from the Castle of Sainte Foy de Montgomery, near Lissieux, Normandy, France. Roger de Montgomery arrived in England with his kinsman, William the Conqueror, in 1066. In 1069 Roger was granted lands on the Welsh border in the County which later took his name, Montgomeryshire. In 1083 he built Shrewsbury Abbey where he is entombed. According to the Doomsday Book, in 1086 he owned 150 castles and lordships within ten counties of England. Roger's grandson Robert de Montgomery, went to Scotland with Walter FitzAlan, also of the Welsh border country, who became High Steward of Scotland and progenitor of the great Stewart Clan. Robert was granted lands by King David I of Scotland in Renfrewshire, and the manor of Eaglesham became the Clan seat of the Montgomerys for many centuries. From 1165 to 1177 the name of Montgomery is mentioned in many grants and Charters, and the Clan territories expanded considerably. Sir John Montgomery, 7th Chief of the Clan, distinguished himself at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388 when he captured Harry Hotspur, Chief of the Percys. Percy's ransom was to build the Castle of Polnoon for Montgomery. John Montgomery later acquired the baronies of Eglinton and Androssan when he married the heiress daughter of Hugh Eglinton.

THE EARLS OF DALHOUSIE WHO WERE ALSO MEMBERS OF THE MOST ANCIENT AND MOST NOBLE ORDER OF THE THISTLE (from Dennis Hurt and Wayne R. Premo) In 2017, Dennis Hurt (Clan member #636) and his Lady Susan, who are avid participants in the Colorado Scottish / Celtic Festivals each year, traveled to the United Kingdom as many of us have over these past decades. While visiting Scotland and particularly Edinburgh, they decided to “take in” St. Giles High Kirk (Kirk meaning Church; or High Kirk meaning Cathedral, in this case) which is located on High Street (The Royal Mile) in Old Town Edinburgh. St. Giles Cathedral or High Kirk of Edinburgh is THE principal place of worship of the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh (Wikipedia online). St. Giles High Kirk today – The Royal Mile – Edinburgh While online websites have a great deal of information with photos about St. Giles High Kirk, what is important to this narrative is the fact that the Thistle Chapel, a section therein, was dedicated in 1911 to the Most AnCient anD Most Noble OrDer oF the Thistle, SCotlanD’s Foremost OrDer oF Chivalry. Again from Wikipedia: “The Most AnCient anD Most Noble OrDer oF the Thistle is an order of chivalry associated with Scotland. The current version of the Order was founded in 1687 by King James VII 1 of ScotlanD (James II of England and Ireland) who asserted that he was reviving an earlier Order. The Order consists of the Sovereign and sixteen Knights and Ladies, as well as certain "extra" knights (members of the British Royal Family and foreign monarchs).

  • Connecting to Clan Montgomery
CONNECTING TO CLAN MONTGOMERY I grew up in a family of four girls - a middle child. My parents followed the Southern custom of naming their children for family members. My mother, Anna Withers Montgomery, had three sisters: Mary, Margaret, and Jane. My father, Carl Ruffin Pritchett had one sister: Dorothy. My two older sisters became Mary Anna and Peggy Jane. I became Dorothy Montgomery and my youngest sister became Elizabeth Withers. I loved my Montgomery middle name and felt part of a larger family -Clan Montgomery. Mama-Anna Withers Montgomery Pritchett-And Daughters Top: Mary Anna, Peggy Jane. Botton:Elizabeth Withers, Dorothy Montgomery Uncle, Hugh Reid Montgomery, often spoke about Clan Montgomery and was the Chaplain of Clan Montgomery Society International for many years. I loved seeing him wear his Montgomery tartan tie. His wife, Martha, wore a Montgomerytartan skirt, and sash to clan gatherings. They wore pins with the clan crest and Montgomery (also spelled Montgomerie in Scotland) motto: Gardez Bien (Look Well). The clan crestis rather gruesome – a woman holding an anchor in one hand and holding the hair of a savage’s head in the other hand. One source reasoned that the woman is considered a symbol of liberty, virtue, and victory of the weak over the strong in a just cause. The anchor is a symbol of good luck. McLaren 7810 Kincardine Court Alexandria, VA 22315-4025 (703) 971-6924 [email protected] 8 April 2000 Version 2000-3 © Copyright 2000 Robert D. McLaren The following list is a compilation of Clan Genealogists or Clan points of contact for genealogy (for the Scottish Clans and Family Associations). The amount of information available from these genealogists varies greatly, with some having extensive records. For example, the clan genealogist for Clan Scott maintains a database of all SCOTTs and is a coordinator of the SCOTT One Name Society. He has about 53,000 records on file dealing with more than 2,000 family lines. The clan genealogist/historian for Clan Barclay also is a coordinator for the BARCLAY One Name Society. She has about 19,000 BARCLAY/BARKLEY and collateral names on file dealing with 125 family lines. The Clan Morrison historian has a 6,000-name database of MORRISON families in the U.S. and Canada. Some clans have genealogy committees. When I learn about them I will include committee members in this listing. Some of these members only cover one or a few states. In these cases, I note the states that particular member covers. Also, some clan genealogists specialize in one surname of a clan. Clan MacKay, for example, has many surname genealogists. I am listing these surnames under the parent clan with a note (i.e., See also Mackie). The actual genealogist and his/her address will be listed under the surname (i.e., Mackie). For some clans, more than one society exists.
