From the Editor

Welcome to the November edition, and thanks to Jenna Wheatman and Liz Raper for their contribution.

With the NYSD cross country league now at halfway, it looks likely to the best season for many years. Participation has tripled and we have been able to score three female teams so far. Hopefully more males will take part in the future.

Committee Meeting Minutes

25 November 2015 at the Scarborough Sports Centre

Present: Sharon Houghton, Simon Valente, Tony Tomaszewicz, Chris Wade, Shaun Tymon, Harry Forkin, Ralph Broadley, Melanie Padgham, Mick Thompson.

Apologies for absence: Julie Clayton, Chris Clayton

Correspondence: Notification has been received from England Athletics of a new online payment facility for club subscriptions which they are introducing. It was agreed to look at this system in comparison to that used by the club at the moment, as costs and benefits may be different.

Finance Report: Tony Tomaszewicz presented the following account information: Race Account: £35,073.27 Savings Account: £49,718.08

Expenses associated with the McCains 10k are not yet known. An early AGM will be required to submit the club accounts in time for the next due date.

Social Events: A night out in November 7th had been successful. Up to 40 people will be attending the Christmas meal. . Junior Section Issues: A hoodie has been designed through a competition held among the junior members and a prototype has been manufactured. Some improvements will be made and the final version should be on sale in the New Year at a cost of £25, to be sold via Sue Haslam. Chris Wade has also been looking at a design for a bobble hat in club colours.

Junior training sessions have been well attended (over 40 on Tuesdays and a combined total of around 60 in Wednesdays).

Chris Wade raised the topic of providing coach transport to events for junior members to seek the committee’s opinion on continuing to provide this. The coach to for the NYSD cross country had cost £200 and the amount drawn from those using the coach meant that a loss was made on this trip, however the weekly payments from junior members would easily cover the full cost of coach trips for those members in future. The committee discussed the need to support junior participation in events, in line with the overall aims of the club stated in the constitution, and the decision of the meeting was that subsidy of such trips should continue. It was established that if a coach was not provided some junior members would not be able to compete in events, and the use of a coach also importantly promoted team spirit among the junior members. Costs to members using coaches in future was agreed at £8.00 per event for seniors and £5.00 minimum for juniors.

Long jump installation at Rugby Club: This issue is on hold to tie in with the building of a cricket pavilion at the rugby club. A sand pit can be installed next summer. The rugby club are looking to attract some revenue from having the facility on the grounds.

McCains 10k and fun run: No problems had been reported other than a difficulty in contacting the first aid services during the race. The overwhelming feedback from competitors had been positive.

Club Places at 2016 London Marathon: The club had been awarded 2 club places in the 2016 London Marathon, a reduction of one place due to a change in the allocation system used by the organisers. 4 applications had been received from club members. These were considered by the committee and the decision was made to allocate the two places to Jayne Graves and David Field, with Harry Forkin as first reserve.

Any Other Business: It was greed to hold the next awards presentation evening in January, 2016 at the cricket club.

It was agreed that the club should support a £15 subscription cost to permit members to take part in the Veterans championships.

Next Committee Meeting: Date and location to be announced later.

Liz Raper

67 year old Liz is the oldest active female in the club. Last year she was ranked 3rd in the Yorkshire M65 Half Marathon rankings and 7th ranked at 10k. This year she is ranked 8th at 10k. A true inspiration to club members. Ed

Years as a runner; 30 years and 4 years with Scarborough AC. I did not start running until I was in my mid thirties. At this time I was on the committee of a local football club and we were fund raising and decided to enter a team in the Scarborough Marathon. A friend put my name forward to be part of a relay team at this event. I thought it was a joke as at that time I could only run a few hundred yards. I did however train for the event and did my bit.

Best performance; half marathon in 1 hour 54 when I first started competing

Favourite race; No particular preference but I have competed in 10 Great North Runs

Favourite female athlete; Paula Radcliffe

Favourite male athlete; Seb Coe.

Targets; To run a sub 2 hour half marathon at the Great North Run

Ambitions; To keep on running!

Hamstring Strengthening

This month we take our hamstring strengthening away from rehabilitation and progress towards sports specificity and injury prevention. This topic was touched slightly at the end of the May 2015 Newsletter which explained about hamstring strains and which 3 exercises you need to put into your rehabilitation when it feels ready.

Hamstring Strengthening I see many clients in the clinic who say they always feel tight in the hamstring, it never gets sharp or tears but just has that dull ache and stiffness they cannot shake off. These 4 exercises, I think should be in every athletes strength program, where running and especially sprinting is involved and will help build not just hamstring strength but also the glutes and trunk.

If you click on the Names of the exercises you will be taken to videos of the exercises.

Exercise 1. Bridge Rather than the traditional knees at 90 degrees (used in early phase hamstring rehab) and feet flat, extend the

legs so the knees are at about 45 degrees with the heels of the feet on the floor. Lift the bottom up from this position and hold for up to 15 seconds 8-10 reps. You can progress this to one leg if you feel ready for it.

Exercise 2. Hamstring Holds The best equipment used for this exercise is a Roman Chair used for back extension exercises but you can easily setup a weights bench and a loaded smith machine or if you just have a squat rack like me, an even more loaded bar to hook your feet under at the same height as the bench. The bench should be just under hips to give some cushioning. I combine this with a back extension holding the up position for 5-10 seconds repeat 2 sets 5-6 reps. You can progress this to one leg or loading it by holding a dumbbell in your hands.

Exercise 3. Straight Leg Deadlift also known as the Romanian Deadlift. This is an exercise many stay away from due to many rumours it causes back problems. When done correctly and loading the hamstrings and glutes properly, hinging at the hips and staying within your own range of motion your back is safe. The video I have linked for this is little brash but the points it makes on helping to get you performing a good deadlift are great. You can stack the bar meaning you can use weight plates, steps or blocks so you do not have to lift or rest the weight on the floor. Many beginners do well lowering to knee height first and then progress by lowering the stack.

This can be progressed to starting with one foot slightly in front of the other or to one leg. Always start with an empty bar and gradually increase weight when ready. Technique is more important than weight lifted. 2-3 sets of 8- 10 reps

Exercise 4 Nordic Hamstring Lower This is a great exercise for developing hamstring strength, perform 2 sets of 5 reps only. you can also do this assisted with the aid of an exercise band.

You can easily place these exercises into your strengthening program, just once a week is enough. Yes, after your first few sessions your hamstrings will feel a little sore, they are getting used and getting strong. Do not do these exercises within 5 days of a competition.

Daisy Willis followed in 12th and Jessica Raw closed in for the team in 14th. The team was backed up by Daisy’s younger sister Emma Willis who was 20th. In the corresponding Boy’s race, Tali Schuman-Saunders who was racing in his second ever league race, finished up in 13th, and Fred Varley made a good league debut with 19th In the Senior Women’s race which included Under-17s, Emma Clapton led the team home up in 26th overall of 97 and was seventh Under-17. Hester Butterworth followed in 32nd and fourth Over-40. Ultra-distance specialist Nikki Carr made a very good league debut with 35th overall. With four to score, Lisa Bourne closed in for the team with a top half finish of 47th. The team was backed up by two more league debutants, Helen Rutter and Fay Debenham who were close to finishing in the top half. Rutter who was racing for the second time at the weekend, was 50th and Debenham was 52th. In the corresponding Men’s race, Paul Chapman was the sole club representative in a quality race, and finished ahead of some good club runners in 112th of 161.

Sewerby Parkrun

Ten club members competed in the latest Sewerby Parkrun, and despite strong windy weather conditions, some excellent finishing times and results were achieved.

For the first time in the history of the event, Scarborough provided both the race winner and also the first female finisher. The race winner was the Italy based James Kraft who returned back home on holiday and came within two seconds of his event best when clocking 16.51. This was James’s 14th event win over the four year history of the series.

The club’s historical double win result was achieved after Issy Nicholls, who just 10 days after her 11th birthday finished the first female of a total of 71 and 64 of whom were senior runners, in a personal best time of 21 minutes 38 seconds. In her final race as a 10 year old two weeks earlier, she set a new course record for 10 year old Girls, and her time was 28 seconds faster than the 10 year old Boy’s record.

Dave Shipley followed Issy home just 5 seconds down in 21.43, and was 20th overall and first over-55 in 21.43.

Hannah Bayes led the remaining seven of the club’s female runners in 22.28 and was third overall and first under- 15-17..

Gemma Tozer was the club’s fourth age group winner when finishing 30th female overall and the first age 10 and under in 29.40.

Lesley Bayes came close to close to another age group win in the over-60’s with a runner up placing in 31.00, and Shirley Field came close with third placed over-55 in 29.38

The other female club members at Sewerby were Lynzie Fleming, 15th 26.25, Linda Hinchliffe 32nd 30.01 and Liz Kraft 63rd 36.39.

Hell on the Humber Reloaded, Halloween Edition

Two club members celebrated Halloween at the Humber Bridge by competing in the Hell on the Humber Reloaded, Halloween edition which is a shorter six hour version of the twelve hour endurance event which takes place on the Humber Bridge in August. The competitors have to complete as many laps of the bridge as possible between 6 pm and midnight, with only full laps to count, and having to come in from the bridge at least once in the final hour in order to qualify for a time and a finisher's t-shirt.

On what was an extremely windy evening even by normal Humber Bridge levels, the club’s long distance specialist athlete Nikki Carr completed 32 miles in 5 hours and 45 minutes, and was the second woman finisher in 5 hours 41 minutes. Nikki was also fundraising for the Ellie Penrose Fund for Young Runners in Sport in memory of a friend lost in August to meningitis. Jim Johnson competed in this annual event for the first time, and completed 7 laps and a total of 28 miles. (Photo attached)

Guisborough Moors Fell Race

Four club members competed in the latest race of the Esk Valley Fell Club Winter Series, which was one of the toughest races in the series, with 12.4 miles and 2789 feet of climb over Guisborough Moor and included an ascent of Roseberry Topping. Sue Haslam finished with Danny Walls in 1hour 58 minutes and was once again the first over-60. They were followed by 65 year old Dave Parke who finished in 2 hours 32.

Just hours after finishing the gruelling Humber Bridge race, Nikky Carr completed the race in 2 hours 52 minutes.

Swiss City Half Marathon

Liz Jones celebrated her 60th birthday by competing in the Swiss City Half Marathon which was held on a tough but scenic course at Lucerne. The day after her birthday, Liz completed the course which in 2 hours 40 minutes.

This was most notably Liz’s fourth half marathon race this year and her ninth race in eight overseas countries in the last five years. She has also completed another seven half marathons in the home countries.
