May 2019 Issue No. 9

Dear Parents and Carers,

Safe & Well at School Survey 2018 From 12th - 16th November 2018, the school participated in the Anti-Bullying week, but also did a lot of work across the whole school before and after that focus week. As part of the anti-bullying work, children in Year 4, 5 & 6 completed an anonymous survey which is administered by Council called the ’Safe & Well at School Survey. We have finally received the Summary Report and would like to share the key headlines from the 2018 Report. Detailed information can be found on our website. 1. I have been bullied at school: Bevendean 1.5% Brighton & Hove Schools 17% 2. I enjoy learning at school: Bevendean 94% Brighton & Hove Schools 88% 3. I feel safe at school: Bevendean 99% Brighton & Hove Schools 89% 4. My school is good at dealing with bullying: Bevendean 99% Brighton & Hove Schools 83% We are extremely pleased with this data; our best ever yet! To achieve this, we ensure that all children have a secure understanding of what bullying is, and can identify trusted adults that they can go to if an incident occurs. We use and encourage the language of: banter, mean-moment, conflicts, teasing to ensure that children can best describe incidents that occur, so we can intervene before they lead to bullying. We would also like to thank and acknowledge parents & carers for supporting the school at a time when incidents of bullying are on the rise in the media. To ensure we continue this great work, we will make sure that there are Learning Mentors on each gate each morning at 8.45am for you to speak with; and make sure that teaching staff are in the playground each morning at 8.50am. Thank you everyone!

SATS Throughout the month of May, children in Year 1, 2 and 6 will be completing statutory tests in English and Maths. You will have already been informed about these; however, if you have any further questions then please speak with your child’s class teacher at the beginning or the end of the school day. The results of these tests do continue to provide Bevendean Primary School with the great reputation that it has! Good luck to all children who will be completing these tests during the month of May.

Congratulations - Miss Miller! I would like to congratulate Miss Miller, Year 6 Teacher (6M), who was recently appointed as the school’s Assistant Headteacher - the first time the school has appointed to this position. Miss Miller will continue to play a big role on the school’s Senior Leadership Team. The school’s Senior Leaders are: Headteacher: Mr Giddens; Deputy Headteacher: Mr Dally; Assistant Headteacher / Maths Lead Teacher: Miss Miller; Inclusion Manager / SENCo: Mrs Crowley; English Lead Teacher: Miss Corsini.

Congratulations - i360 & 2JC i360 received the Spring Term prize this week and groups of children had an enjoyable 40 minute sports session run by Rising Stars Multi Sports coaches in the hall - lots of fun had by all! 2JC were also the winning class for the Spring Term attendance prize finishing the term with 96.6% - well done! They were all seated at the ’Golden Table’ on Wednesday 1st May during lunch time and received some wet-play games for their classroom too.

Child Protection & Safeguarding: At Bevendean Primary School, all staff take safeguarding children very seriously. All staff have been trained in Safeguarding and Child Protection. If you have any concerns about a child’s well-being, bullying, online safety, please contact the Designated Safeguarding Leads: Mrs Crow- ley (Inclusion Manager / SENCo), Mrs Soudain (Senior Learning Mentor) and Mr Giddens (Headteacher). School Attendance Please remember that if you wish to take your child out of school during term time, you need to complete a Leave of Absence form from the school office (can also be downloaded from the school’s website: Parents / Attendance & Holidays in Term Time). Any absence needs to be requested with a minimum of 14 days notice. Please note: Holidays during term time cannot and will not be authorised. The school adheres to both local and national guidance on this. Brighton and Hove Council requires the school to follow up with all poor attendance, unexplained or unauthorised absences from school, along with holidays taken during term time.

As a parent / carer it is your legal duty to ensure that your child attends school every day and arrives on time.

Nursery and Reception Places Our Nursery and Reception allocations are up slightly from previous years, and we still have places available. If you know of anyone who is still looking for a place, have them contact the school office for further information - thank you.

English Parents’ Session Thank you to all parents & carers who attended our English Parents’ Session this week. Children love having their adults join them in class and share in their learning. You would have seen children completing key skills, spelling & grammar exercises and working on their whole class text linked to their writing.

Whole School Picnic Our whole school picnic will again take place on Friday 24th May, starting at 1.30pm, weather permitting! You will be receiving a letter today with more details about this. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

Times Table Rock Stars At Bevendean, we are working really hard to help the children learn their times tables, which is very important for their confidence within Maths. As part of this support, we are using Times Table Rockstars as one way to allow them to practice and become more fluent. Your child should now have brought home a letter containing their username and password. This is to use on either the TTRockstars website: https://play.ttrockstars.com/ play or via the Time Tables Rockstars app that is available to download via the app store for your phone or tablet. If you have any questions, please ask your child's class teacher.

Sunscreen Update As the weather gets warmer, please ensure that your child is adequately protected by providing them with a hat, water bottle and apply sun cream in the morning before coming to school. If your child does need to reapply sun cream during the day, this needs to be brought in, in a named bottle and your child will need to apply this independently.
