The 50+ Steering Group is full steam ahead organizing the Autumn Event on October 12th, which will once more be a little bit different. Our theme this year is “Loneliness and Isolation”, so our 35 exhibitors will be looking at ways of combating this. The Event will be at St Richard’s Community Centre from 1pm - 4pm (see the poster on page 5). We are involved with many of our clubs and activities such as the Thursday Lunch Club and our Trips Group. We hope to do even more in the future by promoting a variety of activities that local people can become involved with. A recent example is the fantastic Tea Dance, which took the place of our Cream Tea event this year. Over 70 people were able to “let their hair down” and enjoy a great dance led by the Ragroof Players. Plus sample some really top class cakes and sandwiches made by the ladies of our “cake group”. Mayor Lynda Hyde came along to present David Weller with our “Volunteer of the Year” Award, which from all the nominations we received was a worthy winner. We have a newly formed Community Garden Group who meet regularly on Wednesdays at the Wayfield House garden (see the advert below). From nothing at the start of the year they are now enjoying freshly picked fruit and vegetables they have grown from what was previously an unkempt jungle. Then there is the new Men in Sheds Group who busy themselves on Monday afternoons making and repairing things in a member’s garage (see the advert below). To date they have made nesting boxes, hedgehog houses, and bird tables and are delighted to have now sold 4 bird tables and a number of hedgehog boxes. The proceeds from this go into Men in Sheds funds to pay for Insurance and materials, etc. Last, but not least is our Singing Group. This is still going strong and is greatly beneficial to all members. All these groups are looking for new members, and Men In Sheds for larger premises. Another group, which continues to attract members, and produce some fabulous items, is the “Crafty Adults” who meet every other Wednesday morning at Churchill House. They and some of the other groups can be seen at the 50+ event in October. The 50+ Steering Group continues to work for older residents in the area, and fully supports all activities that will benefit this age group. Our 50+ leaflet has been revised, and is even more packed full of activities available on every day of the week. Clare Hopkins, our living dynamo of a Project Worker is always ready to hear from anyone who would like to volunteer their services to any of our activities, join in any of them or suggest new ones. Please give her a call on 01273 410858 if you would like to help. Keith Mason (Chairman 50+ Steering Group)

Hangleton and Knoll MEN IN SHEDS and the COMMUNITY GARDEN GROUP are looking for new members. You will be made very welcome at either group so why not come along and give it a try.

Shopmobility is Brighton’s low cost mobility scooter hire service. It’s now available in three locations, making it is easier and more convenient for anyone wanting to hire equipment.

Equipment can now be hired from: • Providence Place car park, London Road • The Fed’s head office at Montague Place in Kemptown, or • Churchill Square.

A quick call in advance to book equipment means The Shopmobility team can deliver your scooter to any of the three sites, or meet people somewhere more convenient (such as a café or bus stop). Payment can be made over the phone or online.

The Fed’s Katharine Russell says: “We are delighted Shopmobility extended its reach. While our customers don’t mind going to Churchill Square to collect scooters, we know lots would prefer to hire closer to home. The two new sites should save people unnecessary and time consuming journeys. And the new service will allow us to be much more flexible. All we need is customers to give us a quick ring in advance to book their scooter.”

Shopmobility is open from 10am - 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Visitors to the city are also welcome to use Shopmobility.

Hannah Vincent and Umi Sinha, both authors will be reading from their novels and discussing why they were drawn to write about family secrets.

Umi Sinha’s compelling novel, Belonging follows three generations of one family from India to , from the darkest days of the British Raj to the aftermath of WWI. It deals with themes of race and ethnicity, of homeland and of the consequences of long-held family secrets. Umi will be in conversation with Hannah Vincent whose debut novel Alarm Girl is set in the modern day and sees 11-year-old Indigo and her brother arriving in South Africa to stay with their father. Indigo is confused by the family’s silence surrounding her mother’s recent death in this story steeped in family drama and mystery.

The event is part of City Reads 2015 an annual citywide reading festival which aims to spread a love of books and ideas to the widest possible audience throughout Brighton & Hove.
