He alleged that allegory is uninteresting for its lack of richness or complexity. But across the pond, only a few decades later, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville wrote texts that, though they profess not to be, are undeniably allegorical, and far from simplistic, mechanical, definite, or easy. This dissertation argues that, despite the romantic taboo against allegory, allegory emerges as a potent way to test the limits of how figurative meaning is transmitted. I trace the story of how Shelley, Hawthorne, and Melville reveal allegory to be more complicated, more lasting than Coleridge imagined. I argue that Hawthorne and Melville do not simply attempt to move beyond allegory. Shelley’s figures offer a glimpse of how one might bypass Coleridge’s critique. But Hawthorne and Melville both write fiction that takes up the problem of allegory head-on, considering, often with allegory as a method as well as a subject, the nature, purpose, and efficacy of allegory. I read their fiction, which often has an epistemological bent, as not just failing to move beyond allegory but as actually being about allegory. Hawthorne sees allegory as an incarnation of the Unpardonable Sin, but he also sees that it is a sin the literary tradition dooms him to perpetuate. I argue that Hawthorne’s messier allegories grant his reader a new kind of freedom, and perhaps a small window of escape from the Unpardonable Sin of traditional allegory. Melville’s characters are vexed by just the kind of epistemological questions that allegory and allegoresis raise, and their inability to land on any solid answers means they can never stop teasing out whether allegory is an appropriate mode of thought. In Hawthorne and Melville’s hands, allegory takes on new forms. But these more difficult, more anxious allegories, suited to their new landscape, iii offer redemption for the whole mode of allegory. Allegory becomes far more interesting when, in these writers’ hands, it becomes a problem. iv Acknowledgments I want to thank my committee for their guidance through this strange project. In “The Death of Allegory,” Collins imagines allegorical figures fled from ordinary life, retired in Florida (11), while the rest of the world has moved into a modernity free of personified abstractions: Even if you called them back, there are no places left for them to go, no Garden of Mirth or Bower of Bliss. The Valley of Forgiveness is lined with condominiums and chain saws are howling in the Forest of Despair. Here on the table near the window is a vase of peonies and next to it black binoculars and a money clip, exactly the kind of thing we now prefer, objects that sit quietly on a line in lower case, themselves and nothing more, a wheelbarrow, an empty mailbox, a razor blade resting in a glass ashtray. (17-26) The capitalized allegorical figures Collins describes—“all those tall abstractions / that used to pose, robed and statuesque, in paintings / and parade about on the pages of the Renaissance / displaying their capital letters like license plates”—are obsolete now, the poem claims (1-4). Collins is by no means alone in proclaiming the death of allegory.1 If 1 For other similar proclamations, see, for example, Edwin Honig, Theresa Kelley, and Gary Johnson. 2 allegory is dead, let’s name its murderer: Samuel Taylor Coleridge deserves the bulk of the credit. Allegory is boring. That was more or less the dominant charge in the 19th century, following from Coleridge: Allegory works mechanically, substituting figures for ideas, transmitting simple, straightforward understanding of dogmatic ideas. Coleridge, whom I will discuss at much more length later, alleged that allegory deals in “fixities and definites” and is uninteresting for its lack of richness or complexity (Biographia Literaria 305). In a letter to his mother when he was seventeen years old, he weighed the possibilities of entering other professions against his inclinations and concluded by asking her what she thought of his becoming a writer. He demonstrated an awareness of some of the disappointments a writer must face by stating that authors are always "poor devils." This realistic attitude was to help him endure the obscurity and lack of reward during the early years of his career. As in many of his letters, he concluded this letter to his mother with a literary reference to describe how he felt about making a decision that would determine how he was to spend his life.1 It was an important decision for him to make, but consciously or unintentionally, he had been pre- paring for such a decision for several years. The build-up to his writing was reading. Although there were no writers on either side of Hawthorne's family, there was a strong appreciation for literature.

    Wishing to Be Interviewed in Henry James’s The Reverberator By Matthew Rubery, University of Leeds When Henry James wrote about the age of “newspaperism” he was really writing about the “age of interviewing” (CN 86). While newspapers had existed for over two centuries, the interview was a controversial invention of the late-nineteenth-century press that dramatically influenced the way audiences thought about private life. The public’s willingness to share their most intimate experiences with journalists through this conversational form was even more alarming to James than the invasion of pri- vacy by newspapers. Matthias Pardon of The Bostonians (1885–86) has been taken to embody the invasive style of American journalism described in James’s notebooks: “There must, indispensably, be a type of newspaper man—the man whose ideal is the energetic reporter. I should like to bafouer the vulgarity and hideousness of this—the impudent invasion of privacy—the extinction of all concept of privacy, etc.” (CN 19). The notebooks characterize the loss of privacy in a way that attributes to the over- zealous reporter sole responsibility for any revelations to come in the novel. Pardon begins his career in just such a fashion by collecting potentially scandalous names from hotel registers, although he makes his reputation through nothing more intrusive than speaking with hotel guests on behalf of The Boston Evening Transcript: [He] was the most brilliant young interviewer on the Boston press. He was particularly successful in drawing out the ladies; he had condensed into shorthand many of the most celebrated women of his time—some of these daughters of fame were very voluminous—and he was supposed to have a remarkably insinuating way of waiting upon prime donne and actresses the morning after their arrival, or sometimes the very evening, while their luggage was being brought up.

[1] The formation of large impact basins (diameter D ≥ 300 km) was an important process in the early geological evolution of Mercury and influenced the planet’s topography, stratigraphy, and crustal structure. We catalog and characterize this basin population on Mercury from global observations by the MESSENGER spacecraft, and we use the new data to evaluate basins suggested on the basis of the Mariner 10 flybys. Forty-six certain or probable impact basins are recognized; a few additional basins that may have been degraded to the point of ambiguity are plausible on the basis of new data but are classified as uncertain. The spatial density of large basins (D ≥ 500 km) on Mercury is lower than that on the Moon. Morphological characteristics of basins on Mercury suggest that on average they are more degraded than lunar basins. These observations are consistent with more efficient modification, degradation, and obliteration of the largest basins on Mercury than on the Moon. This distinction may be a result of differences in the basin formation process (producing fewer rings), relaxation of topography after basin formation (subduing relief), or rates of volcanism (burying basin rings and interiors) during the period of heavy bombardment on Mercury from those on the Moon.

The plays are customarily passed over as an appendage to his poetry, and the prose works are almost entirely neglected, except as philosophical documents. Though the poems are constantly being examined and explicat¬ ed, the prose style is mentioned only incidentally: "one may observe in passing that the section on history in A Vision includes the finest 1 rhythmic prose written in English since that of Sir Thomas Browne." The paradox is that though Yeats* s dramatic movement, in the form of the Abbey Theatre, exerted great influence on English and American drama, his plays themselves remain outside the realm of influence and have not passed into the tradition of English drama.
