CONCLUSION 91 BIBLIOGRAPHY 99 iii CHAPTER I HAWTHORNE'S DEVELOPMENT AS A WRITER Early in his life Nathaniel Hawthorne decided that he would become a writer. In a letter to his mother when he was seventeen years old, he weighed the possibilities of entering other professions against his inclinations and concluded by asking her what she thought of his becoming a writer. He demonstrated an awareness of some of the disappointments a writer must face by stating that authors are always "poor devils." This realistic attitude was to help him endure the obscurity and lack of reward during the early years of his career. As in many of his letters, he concluded this letter to his mother with a literary reference to describe how he felt about making a decision that would determine how he was to spend his life.1 It was an important decision for him to make, but consciously or unintentionally, he had been pre- paring for such a decision for several years. The build-up to his writing was reading. Although there were no writers on either side of Hawthorne's family, there was a strong appreciation for literature. -

Fantastic Comprehensive Of Hawthorne's WorksBy Drew TI am currently in the process of writing a paper on Hawthorne and of the 30 sources I've looked at thus far, this is by far the best. It's a solid reference of Hawthorne's works. Wagenknecht does a wonderful job of putting down the facts and incorporating the opinions and reviews of other Hawthorne scholars. The book remains neutral throughout, which I enjoyed. In writing a paper, it's best to be given the facts with some slight interpretation and then formulate your own views. This book spawns creative thoughts. It's definitely recommended to anyone looking for a comprehensive guide! Additionally, in my research I found a lot of the books on Hawthorne to be quite old. This one if more fresh and contemporary as it was written in 1989. We know more about the dark places in the heart of man today than we did in his time, but nothing we have learned seems to make Hawthorne a less important writer now than he was then.Beginning with a succinct biography of the renowned American writer of the nineteenth century, this book goes on to consider, in successive chapters, all of Hawthorne's tales, romances, and uncompleted experimental writings. -
Nathaniel Hawthorne's “Young Goodman Brown”: a Psychoanalytic
Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown”: A Psychoanalytic Reading Nathaniel Hawthorne’s story “Young Goodman Brown” describes the maturation of its protagonist, Goodman Brown. Through a dream vision, Brown confronts his forefathers, his wife, and authoritative members of his town, and by the end of the story he has established his place in the community as an adult. The events of the dream vision are Brown’s “errand” to a witches’ Sabbath in “the heart of the dark wilderness” and his refusal to take communion from the devil. The psychological significance of the dream vision is less obvious: Through his journey, Brown becomes an adult in his community; though uninitiated at the Sabbath, he is fully initiated socially. This initiation results in a frozen emotional state as the “young” Goodman Brown becomes, overnight, an old and gloomy Goodman Brown, without hope through the end of his days. Ultimately “Young Goodman Brown” can be seen as Hawthorne reaching his own critical understanding of his Puritan ancestors. The conflict that Brown suffers during his journey in the woods is shown to be internal through the number of details that are projections of his unconscious. The devil’s arguments “seemed rather to spring from up in the bosom of his auditor”—that is, Brown himself. When “the echoes of the forest mocked him,” Brown is projecting his emotional state onto the forest. The further Brown sinks into despair, the clearer it becomes that what he sees and hears is to a large extent the product of his fancy. “Once [Brown] fancied that he could distinguish the accents of townspeople of his own,” but “the next moment, so indistinct were the sounds, he doubted whether he had heard aught” until “then came a stronger swell of those familiar tones.” Ultimately Brown himself is the “chief horror of the scene” created by his own mind in conflict. -

Master of Arts (English), December, - v 1970, 119 pp., bibliography, 19 titles. Nathaniel Hawthorne's personal family history, his boy- hood in the Salem area of New England, and his reading of works about New England's Puritan era influenced his choice of witch and Devil lore as fictional material. The witch- ci"aft trials in Salem were evidence (in Hawthorne's inter- pretation) of the errors of judgment and popular belief which are ever-present in the human race. He considered the witch and Devil doctrine of the seventeenth century to be indicative of the superstition, fear, and hatred which governs the lives of men even in later centuries. From the excesses of the witch-hunt period of New England history Hawthorne felt moral lessons could be derived. The historical background of witch and Devil lore, while helpful in illustrating moral lessons, is used by Hawthorne to accomplish other purposes. The paraphernalia of witchcraft with its emphasis on terrible and awesome ceremonies or practices such as Black Sabbaths, Devil compacts, image-magic, spells and curses, the Black Man in'the forest, spectral shapes, and familiar spirits is used by Hawthorne to add atmospheric qualities to his fiction. Use of the diabolic creates the effects of horror, suspense, and mystery. Furthermore, such 2 elements of witch and Devil doctrine (when introduced in The Scarlet Letter, short stories, and historical sketches) also provide an aura of historical authenticity, thus adding a v dimension of reality and concreteness to the author's fiction. -

Hawthorne’s Gifts: Re-reading “Alice Doane’s Appeal” and “The Great Carbuncle” in The Token alexandra urakova AMUEL Griswold Goodrich’s The Token, an annual gift S book in which Nathaniel Hawthorne anonymously pub- lished many of his early tales, has long become the emblem of his “years of obscurity.” Later in his lifetime, Hawthorne would speak about his tales as “rummaged out” “within the shabby morocco-covers of faded Souvenirs.”1 He would de- scribe “musty and mouse-nibbled leaves of old periodicals, transformed, by the magic arts of [his] friendly publishers, into a new book.”2 If the course of Hawthorne’s publication his- tory was culling his fugitive stories from old annuals for the purposes of bringing them together under his own name, I propose to recast these stories back from the “morocco-covers” of The Token and put them alongside neighboring entries to connect them to the broader generic and ideological framework of the volumes and the format of the gift book in general. Since Jane Tompkins’s seminal Sensational Designs (1986), where she touches upon Hawthorne’s publications in The To- ken, we tend to think of classic texts in terms of the cultural I would like to express my deep gratitude to the first reader of this essay, Stephen Rachman, for helping me improve it and generously sharing his ideas. Published in Student Journal of the Department of Anglophone Studies (Vol. 1, 2018) Of Gay Sinners and Grizzly Saints Fundamentalism in “The May-Pole of Merry Mount” CARINA KEWELOH1 Nathaniel Hawthorne’s stories often depict Puritans as superstitious, intolerant, patriarchal and oppressive, which led to the belief he held a negative attitude towards them. However, “The May-Pole of Merry Mount”2 suggests that this resentment is not specifically directed towards Puritans. Hawthorne’s short story rather exposes the dangers of fundamentalism in general. This essay scrutinizes both the portrayal of the community of Merry Mount and the Puritans in the short story to explore the features of fundamentalism they depict. Finally, the restricting and impairing effects of both fundamentalist communities will be assessed using the example of Edgar and Edith, the young couple at the center of Hawthorne’s tale. -

As is the story of the success of Howard Kurt Brownell Hanson’s Merry Mount at the Met in 1934—a remarkable Gelfand-Piper Photography event, when you think about it. I should add a special Bob Klein Photography word of thanks here to David Peter Coppen, the Sibley Carlos Ortiz Don Ver Ploeg/VP Communications Library Archivist, who is always helpful with providing Amy Vetter historical photographs and other materials for Notes, but Photography coordinator outdid himself for these three articles. -

Actually, with the truth shifted from religious to psychological one, textual evidence shows that Chillingworth is far from that bad, and as one of the protagonists, she also deserves the pity and sympathy from the reader. Introduction As a man of letters, Nathaniel Hawthorne had struggled in literary circle for more than two decades in obscurity, before the publication of his masterpiece The Scarlet Letter (1850), which finally brought him both good reputation and profit with a soaring sale. With this work, it seems overnight Hawthorne was known to the public, as within ten days the work had a sale of 2500 copies, and in the next 14 years this book brought Hawthorne the profit as much as $1500. The Scarlet Letter, set in the 1640s New England, narrates the story of adultery and redemption of a young lady Hester Prynne. From the masterpiece, the reader will always generate an endless number of meanings from different perspectives. So far, scholars have conducted their researches from different perspectives, such as redemption of religion, feminism, Freud’s psychoanalysis, prototype theory and character analysis.
