The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College For Immediate Release Photography Exhibition ‘This Place’ will be presented by Tang Teaching Museum in collaboration with museums at Colgate, Hamilton and UAlbany The Tang to feature work by Wendy Ewald, Gilles Peress, Stephen Shore, Nick Waplington that explores Israel and the West Bank SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (December 12, 2017) — The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College is leading a four-campus exhibition of This Place, which features more than 600 images by twelve internationally acclaimed photographers who explore the personal and public spaces in Israel and the West Bank. Opening February 3 through April 22, 2018, the Tang’s presentation will feature work by four of the twelve photographers, who each took different approaches, highlighting how photography can illuminate multiple perspectives on a complex topic: Wendy Ewald, taught and photographed children and adults in fourteen communities in Israel and the West Bank in their homes and villages, collecting tens of thousands of digital images, a selection of which is on display at the Tang Museum; Gilles Peress photographed the Road of Patriarchs from Hebron to Jerusalem and the Palestinian village of Silwan in East Jerusalem, areas he considers to be fault lines in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; Stephen Shore used a his 8 x 10 view camera and a digital camera to photograph landscapes and cityscapes, sacred places, street scenes, and community; and Nick Waplington created a photographic survey of Jewish settlements in the West Bank through both family portraits and images of the natural and built environment.

  • This Book Is a Compendium of New Wave Posters. It Is Organized Around the Designers (At Last!)
“This book is a compendium of new wave posters. It is organized around the designers (at last!). It emphasizes the key contribution of Eastern Europe as well as Western Europe, and beyond. And it is a very timely volume, assembled with R|A|P’s usual flair, style and understanding.” –CHRISTOPHER FRAYLING, FROM THE INTRODUCTION 2 artbook.com French New Wave A Revolution in Design Edited by Tony Nourmand. Introduction by Christopher Frayling. The French New Wave of the 1950s and 1960s is one of the most important movements in the history of film. Its fresh energy and vision changed the cinematic landscape, and its style has had a seminal impact on pop culture. The poster artists tasked with selling these Nouvelle Vague films to the masses—in France and internationally—helped to create this style, and in so doing found themselves at the forefront of a revolution in art, graphic design and photography. French New Wave: A Revolution in Design celebrates explosive and groundbreaking poster art that accompanied French New Wave films like The 400 Blows (1959), Jules and Jim (1962) and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964). Featuring posters from over 20 countries, the imagery is accompanied by biographies on more than 100 artists, photographers and designers involved—the first time many of those responsible for promoting and portraying this movement have been properly recognized. This publication spotlights the poster designers who worked alongside directors, cinematographers and actors to define the look of the French New Wave. Artists presented in this volume include Jean-Michel Folon, Boris Grinsson, Waldemar Świerzy, Christian Broutin, Tomasz Rumiński, Hans Hillman, Georges Allard, René Ferracci, Bruno Rehak, Zdeněk Ziegler, Miroslav Vystrcil, Peter Strausfeld, Maciej Hibner, Andrzej Krajewski, Maciej Zbikowski, Josef Vylet’al, Sandro Simeoni, Averardo Ciriello, Marcello Colizzi and many more.

Here Meyerowitz looked at, touched, studied, and connected with the more than 250 objects that Morandi painted. Using only the warm natural light in the room, he photographed Morandi’s objects: vases, shells, pigment-filled bottles, silk flowers, tins, funnels, watering cans. In the photographs, each object sits on Morandi’s table, which still bears the marks the painter drew to set the positions of his subjects. In the background is the paper that the artist left on the wall, now brittle and yellow with age. Meyerowitz’s portraits of these dusty, aged objects are not only works of art themselves, but they offer insight into the humble subjects that Morandi transformed into his subtle and luminous paintings. Through close visual analyses of photojournalist, press, and social documentary photographs, this Ph.D examines the visual responses to the Government’s advocation of a ‘healthy’ society and its programme of social and economic ‘waste-saving’. Drawing Imogen Tyler’s interpretation of ‘social abjection’ (the discursive mediation of subjects through exclusionary modes of ‘revolting aesthetics’) into the visual field, this Ph.D explores photography’s implication in bolstering the abject and exclusionary discourses of the era. Exploring the contexts in which photographs were created, utilised and disseminated to visually convey ‘waste’ as an expression of social abjection, this Ph.D exposes how the Right’s successful establishment of a neoliberal political economy was supported by an accelerated use and deployment of revolting photographic aesthetics.

(April 1, 2016) — Skidmore College will lead an innovative collaboration on teaching and learning with on-campus museums through a joint exhibition with Colgate University, Hamilton College, and the University at Albany that has been made possible by the generosity of a three-year, $222,500 grant from The Teagle Foundation.
