ABSTRACT OF THESIS CONSTRUCTING THE REAL: THE NEW PHOTOGRAPHY OF CREWDSON, GURSKY AND WALL A new class of photographs that relies on digital processes, best exemplified by the works of Gregory Crewdson, Andreas Gursky and Jeff Wall all exhibit a ‘not quite right’ quality that calls into question some of the most closely held truisms of photographic thought. Through novel technological processes combined with the elements of the new photography—new scale, fabulist imagery, and implied narrative—these images challenge the nature of photography as a documentary process and, beyond that, the nature of what we understand to be ‘the real’ that is supposedly documented. A visual analysis of these images through the lens of Roland Barthes’ and Susan Stewart’s scholarship reveals truths about these images and about photography as a medium.

Project #3: Inspired by… - Description Critique Date - 3/29/19 (Fri) "The world is filled to suffocating. Man has placed his token on every stone. Every word, every image, is leased and mortgaged. We know that a picture is but a space in which a variety of images, none of them original, blend and clash." – Sherrie Levine Conceptual Requirements: In this project, you will do your best to interpret the style of a particular photographer who interests you. You will research them as well as their work in order to make photographs that have a signature aesthetic or approach that is specific to them, and also contribute your ideas. Technical Requirements: 1. Start with the list on the back of this page (the Project Description sheet), and start web searches for these photographers. All the ones listed are masters in their own right and a good starting point for you to begin your search. Select one and confirm your choice with me by the due date (see the syllabus). 2. After choosing a photographer, go on the web and to the library to check out books on them, read interviews, and look at every image you can that is made by them. Learn as much as you can and take notes on your sources. 3. Type your name, date, and “Project 3: Inspired by...” at the top of a Letter sized page. Then write a 2 page research paper on your chosen photographer. Be sure to include information such as where and when they were born, where it is that they did their work, what kind of camera and film formats they used, their own personal history, etc.

Whereas during the height of postmodern semiotic critique, realism was taboo and documentary could only be deconstructed, today both are surprisingly vital. Nevertheless, recent attempts to recover realism after poststructuralism remain fraught, bound up with older epistemological and metaphysical concepts. This study argues instead for a “critical realism” that is oriented towards problems of ethics, intersubjectivity, and human rights. Rather than conceiving of realism as “fit” or identity between representation and reality, it is treated here as an articulation of difference, otherness and non-identity. This new concept draws on the writings of curator Okwui Enwezor, as well as German critical theory, to analyze the work of three artists: Ian Wallace (b.

art press 350 dossier Still Images for Rethin the World Dominique Baqué If it’s November it must be Photo Month. As Jean-Luc Monterosso, director of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, points out in this special section, this big Parisian event is now being emulated far and wide. But November is also the month of Paris Photo at the Carrousel du Louvre (November 13 to 16), a rich fair that usually offers a fine harvest of discoveries. Those with an interest in the more technical side of photography will find some thoughts con cerning the fragility of prints and the complexity of their conservation in the ar ticle by Anne Cartier-Bresson. As for Maja Hoffmann, who over the years has be come a key figure at the Arles photography festival, she talks to Bernard Marcelis about her plans—and not only in the realm of photography—for her Luma Foun dation, soon to be heaquartered in Arles in a building designed by Frank Gehry. Final ly, in the text here, Dominique Baqué considers recent trends in photography and its current status, and looks at ways in which some of its exponents are using the still image to analyze current realities by creating new forms of fiction. If one of the key concerns of modernism was the dogged struggle do keep the work of art from contamination by the mass media industry, and thus to preserve its autonomy, aura and purity, then the 1980s finally put paid to its hopes of success. The extension of photography into the field of the visual arts played no small part in this.

  • Alec Soth's Journey: Materiality and Time Emily Elizabeth Greer
Alec Soth’s Journey: Materiality and Time Emily Elizabeth Greer Introduction The photographer Alec Soth is known for series of images and publications that encapsulate his travels through time and place within the American landscape. Each grouping of photographs uses a specific medium and geographical orientation in order to explore unique journeys and themes, such as the loneliness and banality of strangers in a public park, religion and debauchery in the Mississippi Delta, and the isolation of hermits in the valleys of rural Montana. Yet how are we to understand the place of these smaller journeys within Soth’s larger artistic career? How are these publications and series connected to one another, and how do they evolve and change? Here, I will consider these questions as they relate to the specific materials within Soth’s work. Using material properties as a framework illuminates the way in which each series illustrates these specific themes, and also how each grouping of images holds a significant place within the artist’s larger photographic oeuvre. Throughout Alec Soth’s career, his movement between mediums has evolved in a manner that mirrors the progression of themes and subject matter within his larger body of work as a whole. From his earliest photographic forays in black and white film to his most recent digital video projects, Soth creates images that depict a meandering passage through time and place.1 His portraits, still lifes, and landscapes work together to suggest what one might call a stream of conscious wandering. The chronological progression of materiality in his works, from early black and white photography to large format 8x10 color images to more recent explorations in digital photography and film, illuminates the way in which each medium is used to tell a story of temporality and loneliness within the American landscape.

  • Remembering Ernst Haas
Special Report: Remembering Ernst Haas September 12, 2016 By Eric Meola “No photographer has worked more successfully to express the sheer physical joy of seeing.” — John Szarkowski, on Ernst Haas Thirty years have passed since the photographer Ernst Haas died on September 12, 1986. Haas was to color photography what Robert Frank was to black and white: a revolutionary. Looking at his work it is impossible to separate the person, his images and his words. Often called the ‘poet’ of photography, no other photographer influenced my generation as much as Haas did, and in a world of sound bites, Instagram and tweets, his writings are a bridge to another time when photography was a profoundly different medium and craft: In every artist there is poetry. In every human being there is the poetic element. We know, we feel, we believe…one cannot photograph art. One can only live it in the unity of his vision, as well as in the breadth of his humanity, vitality, and understanding. There is no formula—only man with his conscience speaking, writing, and singing in the new hieroglyphic "Pamplona, Spain 1956," by Ernst Haas language of light and time. — Ernst Haas Haas was born in Vienna in 1921 and famously bartered several kilos of butter in post-war Europe for his first camera, a Rolleiflex. At the invitation of Robert Capa he joined Magnum in 1949, and in 1951 he moved to the United States. In 1953, Life magazine ran 24 pages of his photographs of New York City in two consecutive issues, and in 1962 a retrospective of his work was the first color photography exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
