A Growing Nation”: 19Th Century Literature (1800-1870) Name: ________________________________ CHS English 11 (2.0): The Student-Centered Classroom Unit 3 Handbook: “A Growing Nation”: 19th Century Literature (1800-1870) The following is a checklist of all unit activities that must be mastered before moving on to the next unit. Students may work at their own pace, but ALL activities must be submitted by the ultimate due date. Failure to submit any materials by the due date will result in a ZERO for that activity—if any activity is completed by the due date, then students will be able to retake/resubmit materials according to their satisfaction. ALL students must complete the “Unit 3 Grammar & Style Packets” and ONE of other “Enrichment” activity within the unit. Every student is also responsible for completing a Reading Log for the Literature Circle portion of the unit. This is five total entries, each of which should be at least one-half-page in length. Please submit your materials as you finish them and I will return them as soon as possible so that you have them to review for your Unit Learning check. For this reason, you will need to allow for at least TWO days for grading/returning your submissions. You may take your Unit Check when you have submitted all of your materials (even if you have to wait to conclude Literature Circle discussion sessions). The music that a person listens to during his or her high school years more often than not defines the time period for the student. The baby boomers had the Beatles and rock and roll. What to Look For: This story was written in 1824 by Washington Irving, better known for “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Have you heard of the New York Knicks basketball team? That name comes from Diedrich Knickerbocker, a character in one of Irving’s stories. The term “knickerbocker” has come to mean someone who is a native New Yorker. “The Devil and Tom Walker” is a variation of a common tale in folklore – that of someone selling his soul to the devil for money and power on while on earth (see “The Faust Legend” on p. 235). This story is a dark comedy, the characters are portrayed as unlikeable with few redeeming qualities, so much so that we can laugh at how ridiculous these people are. People in the New England region of the United States, unlike earlier times, are now staunchly opposed to slavery. Note that Tom refuses to take his riches from the devil in the form of becoming a slave trader (p. 235). Tom is hardly a moral man, but even he won’t stoop that low! Also, the author lets the devil be the character who speaks derogatorily of African Americans and Native Americans, thus expressing his disapproval.
