    Un paseo «Hispanoamericano» por las calles de Madrid Mi primera intención al pensar en esta ponencia fue trata de hacer un paseo «real» por las calles madrileñas que recuerdan con su nombre lugares, aconte- cimientos y personajes de Hispanoamérica. Pero la extensión de la ciudad ha hecho imposible esa primera intención, porque no es habitual que esténjuntas, ni siquiera muy próximas más de dos o tres, salvo en el caso de los países o las ciudades (Parque del Retiro y Barrio de Hispanoamérica). Para redactaría he dividido el trabajo en cinco grupos distintos: 1. Países y Ciudades; 2. Conquistadores, Cronistas y Evangelizadores (en este caso nos encontraremos con nombres de personajes nacidos en la Península, pero que tuvieron una enorme importancia en los primeros momentos de la formación del Nuevo Mundo); 3. Escritores e Intelectuales; 4. Políticos; y un quinto grupo que he titulado 5. «Personajes varios», en el que encontraremos una serie de nombres queno son fácilesde incluir en ninguno de losapartados anteriores, pero que, sin embargo, ponen también de manifiesto esa presencia del Nuevo Continente en lacapital de España. Madrid is enormous, so here’s a roughly drawn map up top and a brief description of Madrid’s central neighborhoods, which are often divided by just one street or overlapping. SOL is the city-center and home to Madrid’s most popular meeting-point: “the bear statue” or as it’s called in Spanish, “El Oso y el Madroño”. Sol also marks Kilometer Zero, meaning that all of Madrid’s building numbers and highways stem from there. It’s literally the middle-point of the entire Iberian Peninsula. Sol is also the center-point of the city when it comes to transport, shopping and tourist destinations. All of Madrid’s most popular shops are located within walking distance from Sol, and there are plenty of restaurants, both new and old, to dine at.
