  • An Arts Tourist in Yogjakarta
An arts tourist in Yogyakarta Kim Dunphy, Manager , Cultural Development Network The art of the overpass in Yogyakarta: the famous monkeys from the Ramayana Ballet On leave from my day job supporting cultural development in Victoria, I took the opportunity to explore some of the arts experiences that Yogyakarta, Indonesia’s cultural capital had to offer. My brief exploration of city attractions included an enjoyable mix of traditional and contemporary arts. I begin with a visit to the famous tourist attraction, the Ramayana Ballet which is performed twice a week throughout the year against the magnificent backdrop of the famous Prambanan temples. This dance style is a curious mix of Indonesian and Indian cultures, with the Indian Ramayana story presented through traditional Javanese dance, demonstrating the considerable impact of early Hindu missionaries and traders on Indonesian culture. A highlight was the deer dance, and the enchanting fluid and flexible movements, jangly gold costumes and headdresses of the young female deer dancers. Disappointingly, the heroine of the Ramayana, Princess Shinta, doesn’t dance much at all. This is quite unlike western ballet, when the female dancers’ roles are as physically and technically demanding as the men’s. Shinta’s royal station is indicated by her complex and beautiful costume. This sarong is tied and positioned in such a way that Shinta can only make the tiniest of movements, indicative also of her tightly bound social role. Around her, the menfolk of the story, including her husband Rama (a good and bad guy), the really bad guys, and the ebullient wild monkeys of the forest, run, jump, battle, adventure and 1 move her, kidnapping and rescuing her over and over, while she stands, poses and creeps tiny steps forward and backwards, endlessly flicking her sarong out of the way to do so.

The discussion has put emphasis on the elaboration of any visual aesthetics aspects embodied within the Ramayana sculptural program in the narrative relief which is encircling along Prambanan temple inner wall in Kalasan, Yogyakarta. Since the relief’s theme is derived from the ancient epic story of Ramayana legend (by Valmiki), it is plausible that the later creative process of the relief work was cre- ated through the adaptation theory procedure. Keywords: creative arts, adaptation theory, Prambanan relief, Ramayana ABSTRAK Penciptaan Karya Seni dengan proses Adaptasi: Relief Ramayana di Candi Prambanan. • Storytelling Ramayana Through Philately
Storytelling Ramayana through Philately Briti Deb India 1947 photogravure print stamp with Jai Hind written in Hindi. Ramayana was written in Sanskrit which influenced many languages like Hindi, and both are written in the same script called Devanagari. Introduction: Ramayana, one of the four largest epics of the world (other three being the Mahabharata, Iliad, and Odyssey), is also arguably the oldest continuous tradition of storytelling in the world. This Hindu epic teaches on the goals of human life. It has a profound impact on the culture, family relations, and moral values in India and many other countries, manifesting itself in literature, art, architecture, painting, dance, drama, and festivals. Ramayana was introduced to the West in 1843 in Italian by Gaspare Gorresio. The term Ramayana literally means the march (ayana) of Rama (an avatar of the Hindu God Vishnu) in search of human values. The epic poem is written in Sanskrit and is composed of rhyming couplets called Slokas, teaching the concept of Dharma (moral). According to Hinduism, Dharma is the law that maintains the regulatory order of the universe, helping to achieve social harmony and human happiness. According to Hindu mythology, the historic period or Yuga in which Rama lived is known a Treta Yuga, when Dharma (moral) of people are believed to be of high order. In subsequent periods, i.e., Dwapar Yuga when the story of Mahabharata took place and the present Kali yuga in which we live now, morality is believed to be declining. In this context, storytelling Ramayana comes as a relief by teaching moral and spiritual values.

The Balinese have been readily praised for their ability to borrow whatever foreign influence suits them while nevertheless maintaining their identity over the centuries. Today, there is no dearth of observers to claim that the Balinese have adjusted to the tourist invasion of their island just as in the past—taking advantage of the appeal of their cultural traditions to foreign visitors without sacrificing their own values on the altar of monetary profit. The following quotation should suffice as an example of such an established conviction: The Balinese seem to be coping with the tourist invasion as well as they have coped with others, that is they are taking what they want, but they are not allowing them *This article is a revised version of a paper given at the International Workshop on Indonesian Studies, Bali nese State and Society: Historical, Textual and Anthropological Approaches, held at the Royal Institute of Linguistics and Anthropology (KITLV), Leiden, April 21-24, 1986.
