With its wonderful beaches, amazing countryside, and friendly people, Bali will charm you during your stay at premiere beach resorts across the island. Edwina Warder [email protected] page 2 of 19 8009066756 (office) This 10-day Indonesia vacation takes you across Bali, staying in the centres of Seminyak, Ubud, and Sanur as you explore this verdant island. As Indonesia’s most popular tourist destination, Bali has a lot going for it. Its landscape is a mixture of jungle and beach, making it both an ideal spot to go for wildlife hikes and the ultimate beach getaway. You’ll start your Bali vacation in Seminyak, the flashy expat centre in the island’s southwest. In Seminyak, you’ll spend your days taking advantage of the wide, sandy beach that’s typically less crowded than others on Bali. If you need a break from the sun, the wealth of design shops and galleries will keep you occupied, as will the lively nightlife. While in Seminyak, you’ll take a day to visit the Kintamani region in the island’s interior. You’ll tour the quaint villages that dot the region, but the highlight of your day trip will be a visit to the active volcano on Mount Batur, which continues to smoke to this day. Sitting at 1,700 metres high, Mount Batur is an impressive sight and casts a foreboding shadow over the island. In addition to the volcano, you’ll visit a silversmith’s workshop in the village of Celuk and explore the 11th-century Hindu temple complex in Tampaksiring. After Seminyak and the Kintamani region, your next stop on your Bali vacation will be Ubud, a small town located about 50 kilometres from most other tourist centres. Located among gently-rolling rice paddies and steep ravines, Ubud has a tranquil, even spiritual, atmosphere. As such, it’s a hotbed for wellness, with yoga and meditation courses some of the most popular practices here. Spend your time in Ubud taking advantage of the slow rhythm and recalibrating your mind and body. It’s also a great spot for shopping, so be sure to peruse the local crafts, batiks, clothes, and paintings, to see what souvenirs you want to take home with you. The final stop is Sanur Beach, a pampering beach resort on the east coast. Take advantage of the resort spa and treat yourself to a massage. Visit Gunung Kawi at Tampaksiring At the bottom of a lush green river valley lies one of Balis oldest and largest ancient monuments. Gunung Kawi consists of 10 candi (shrines) memorials cut out of the rock face in imitation of actual statues. They stand in awe-inspiring 8m high sheltered niches cut into the sheer cliff face. On the northern outskirts of Tampaksiring, a sign points east off the main road to Gunung Kawi. The views as you walk through ancient terraced rice fields are as fine as any in Bali. Ubud: From The Origins to 19201 Jean Couteau* Abstract Today’s historis often tries to weave together unquestionable facts with a narrative that consciously gives room to past myths and legends. The following article about the famous “cultural” resort of Ubud freely applies this approach to history. Myths and legends about the origin of Ubud combine with unquestionable historical facts to convey, beyond the Ubud’s raw history proper, the prevailing athmosphere of Ubud’s pre-modern past. Thus the mythical seer Resi Merkandaya is made to appear alongside the story of the kembar buncing (fraternal, non-identical twins) of the House of Ubud, and the history of Western presence and intervention. The Transnational Legal Process of Global Health Jurisprudence: HIV and the Law in Indonesia Siradj Okta A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2020 Reading Committee: Walter J. Walsh, Chair Rachel A. Cichowski Dongsheng Zang Aaron Katz Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Law © Copyright 2020 Siradj Okta University of Washington Abstract The Transnational Legal Process of Global Health Jurisprudence: HIV and the Law in Indonesia Siradj Okta Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Walter J. Walsh School of Law As one of the most pressing global health priorities, HIV disruption requires effective transnational work. There is growing confidence among experts about ending AIDS by 2030. In Indonesia, a country with one of Asia’s fastest-growing HIV epidemics, the law is instrumental to achieve that goal. Nonetheless, national laws and policies that undermine HIV prevention are continuously being adopted or preserved. This suggests that the presence of global health jurisprudence does not necessarily lead to national legal processes to enable HIV prevention policies. This situation raises the central question of whether the perpetuation of national legal barriers to HIV prevention is associated with Indonesia’s internalization of global health jurisprudence. This study uses Professor Harold Koh’s transnational legal process theory to examine the transfer of global health jurisprudence by looking at Indonesia’s interaction at the global level, interpretation of norms, and domestic internalization thereof. As a multi-method study with an inductive reasoning approach, this research utilizes a qualitative data analysis of international organizations’ laws and policies, public/private institutions’ policies, international treaties, Indonesian laws, and relevant public records.

  • How Does Tourism Affect the Sociocultural Aspects of the Local Community? - a Minor Field Study in Bali
Södertörns University |Department of Science, Environment and Technology Bachelor’s Essay 15hp | Tourism Studies C | Spring Term 2018 Tourism Program Figure 1: Balinese dancer (Seruling 2017) How does tourism affect the sociocultural aspects of the local community? - A Minor Field Study in Bali Emma Holmlund Isabelle Donnerberg Supervisor: Gustaf Onn Tourism Studies C: Bachelor’s Essay ST-18 Abstract: The tourism industry is growing rapidly worldwide. In 2016, Bali, Indonesia, had a record year in tourism, and the industry is continuously growing. One can argue that tourism is a culture exploiter and disrupts traditional culture. Nevertheless, it can also revitalize culture. Since the tourism in Bali is based on the Balinese culture and traditions, the writers wanted to acquire a deeper understanding of how the locals look upon - does tourism affect their cultural traditions and can residents preserve their local culture? A qualitative method was used for this study. For the collecting of data the writers conducted semi-structured interviews. The result of the study was, according to the Balinese, that people in Bali have become more money oriented due to the development of tourism and that some ceremonies have lost their spiritual meaning. In addition, the writers found that the locals are continuously working on preserving their culture but the challenge is to preserve what is actually authentic Balinese. Keywords: social exchange, social conflict, sociocultural, tourism, local community, community based tourism, culture, traditions. 1 Preface: We would like to thank all the external reviewers who continuously helped us improve our study. We would also like to thank Mr. Basmantra from Undiknas University who has been our contact person in field and who helped us find respondents for the study.

  • A Morphometric Analysis of Apis Cerana F and Apis Nigrocincta Smith Populations from Southeast Asia
Original article A morphometric analysis of Apis cerana F and Apis nigrocincta Smith populations from Southeast Asia MS Damus GW Otis Environmental Biology, University of Guelph, Guelph, ON N1G 2W1, Canada (Received 15 August 1996; accepted 14 August 1997) Summary — Apis cerana F and Apis nigrocincta Smith, two species of Asian cavity nesting honey bees, were analyzed for interpopulation morphological variation using conventional morphometric techniques. The well-known honey bee subspecies Apis cerana cerana and A c japonica are confirmed as being distinct from the rest of A cerana, even though the analysis removed the confounding influ- ence of ’overall size’ from the data set. There are at least three other morphologically distinct groups: one ranging from Sri Lanka through to Flores and central Sulawesi, a second group so far only found in southern Sulawesi, and a group from Timor. A large phenetic shift has occurred in the second Sulawesi group, indicating that it may have evolved in isolation for a long period of time, or under- gone rapid divergence following a more recent bottleneck event. A nigrocincta is shown to be pre- sent over most of western Sulawesi, on Mindanao and on Sangihe, a small island between Min- danao and Sulawesi. The Mindanao and Sulawesi forms are distinct, but the small sample size did not allow for subspecific recognition. Bees from Luzon, previously identified as A c philippina, are shown to be very distinct from both A cerana and A nigrocincta, and the possibility of their belong- ing to the species A nigrocincta is discussed. Apis cerana / Apis nigrocincta / morphometrics / Southeast Asia / honey bees INTRODUCTION been well studied over most of their range, and have been assigned to many subspecies The honey bees of the world (Apidae: Apis (races or geographical variants) on the basis spp) are widespread over their native range of morphometric analyses.
