But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being. -

There are very few comprehensive studies on women’s participation in the freedom movement. In my paper I will try to bring forward a complete picture of Bengali women’s active role in the politics of protest: Bengal from 1905-1947, which is so far being discussed in different phases. In this way we can explain that how the women from time to time had strengthened the nationalist movement not only in the way it is shaped for them but once they participated they had mobilized the movement in their own way. Nature of Participatation in the Various Movements: A general idea for quite a long time had circulated regarding women’s participation that it is male dictated. -

Fact Sheet Freer|Sackler Smithsonian Institution ABOUT THE FREER|SACKLER The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, located on the National Mall in Washington, DC, comprise the Smithsonian’s museum of Asian art. The Freer|Sackler contains one of the most important collections of Asian art in the world, featuring more than 40,000 objects dating from the Neolithic period to the present day, with especially fine groupings of Islamic art; Chinese jades, bronzes, and paintings; and the art of the ancient Near East. The museum also contains important masterworks from Japan, ancient Egypt, South and Southeast Asia, and Korea, as well as a noted collection of American art. The Freer|Sackler is committed to expanding public knowledge of the collections through exhibitions, research, and publications. As of 2016, the Freer building is closed for renovation. It will reopen in 2017 with modernized technology and infrastructure, refreshed gallery spaces, and an enhanced Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Auditorium. Visit asia.si.edu/future for more information. BACKGROUND AND COLLECTIONS Charles Lang Freer, a self-taught connoisseur, began purchasing American art in the 1880s. With the encouragement of American artist James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903), Freer also began to collect Asian art, assembling a preeminent group of works. In 1904, Freer offered his collection to the nation, to be held in trust by the Smithsonian Institution. The Freer Gallery of Art opened to the public in 1923—the first Smithsonian museum dedicated to fine art. The Freer’s collection spans six thousand years and many different cultures. Besides Asian art, the Freer houses a collection of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American art, including the world’s largest number of works by Whistler. -

journal of jesuit studies 6 (2019) 270-293 brill.com/jjs Catholic Presence and Power: Jesuit Painter Bernardo Bitti at Lake Titicaca in Peru Christa Irwin Marywood University [email protected] Abstract Bernardo Bitti was an Italian Jesuit and painter who traveled to the viceroyalty of Peru at the end of the sixteenth century to make altarpieces in the service of the order’s conversion campaigns. He began his New World career in Lima, the viceregal capital and then, over a span of thirty-five years, traveled to Jesuit mission centers in cities throughout Peru, leaving a significant imprint on colonial Peruvian painting. In 1586, Bitti was in Juli, a small town on Lake Titicaca in southern Peru, where the Jesuits had arrived a decade prior and continually faced great resistance from the local popula- tion. In this paper, I will argue that Bitti’s paintings were tools implemented by the Jesuit missionaries seeking to establish European, Christian presence in the conflicted city. Thus, Bitti’s contribution at Juli can serve as but one example of how the Jesuits used art as part of their methodology of conversion. After a failed attempt by an earlier set of missionaries, and significant hesi- tancy on the part of the Jesuits the evangelization efforts at Juli would eventu- ally come to mark an example of success for other Jesuit sites. Juli presents a fascinating case of Jesuit mission activity because it offers documentation of the indigenous culture’s integration into a newly created Christian town. -

ENSAIO BIBLIOGRÁFICO 125 José Raimundo Noras | Centro de História (FLUL) e Centro de Investigação Joaquim Veríssimo Serrão (CIJVS) No presente ensaio pretendemos analisar a principal produção acadé- mica relativa à formação da identidade cultural do Tibete e de que modo, mais recentemente, esta se tem assumido como reivindicação nacional. Consideramos, à partida, que tal afirmação de identidade cultural tibetana deve ser compreendida em relação ao desenvolvimento dos impérios chi- nês e mongol, entre outros intervenientes, mais esporádicos, na evolução política e cultural das sociedades da Ásia Central. Em termos cronológicos, não propomos balizas estanques, abordamos a «questão do Tibete» – para utilizar a expressão de Tom Grunfeld1 – na perspetiva da longa duração, isto é da formação do Império tibetano nos séculos VII e VIII à recente incorporação do território na República Popular da China, no século XX. Não adotamos qualquer posição dogmática no debate historiográfico acerca das relações históricas entre o Tibete e a China, nas suas mais variadas for- mulações enquanto entidades políticas. Aliás, pretendemos dar conta desse debate, apresentando as duas perspetivas em confronto. No decurso deste ensaio propomos assim, em primeiro lugar, uma análise à historiografia produzida sobre o Tibete, analisando as «histórias do Tibete» mais recentes, bem como trabalhos «clássicos» neste âmbito. Esco- lhemos obras que apresentam uma análise da «questão tibetana» na lógica da longa duração e que, de alguma forma, abordem a relação do Tibete com os diversos impérios da região. No segundo momento, concentramos a nossa análise em textos historiográficos com maior especificidade, como por exemplo os que se concentram na evolução das elites tibetanas no século XVIII; nas relações culturais entre o Tibete, a Mongólia e a China; ou no período «moderno», isto é, contemporâneo da história Tibetana.
