Land Revenue and Agriculture.-The Survey Settlement was first introduced into Kolha1mr territory about the year l 867. The rerisel settlement was commenced in 1895 and has now reached completion with the exception o£ a few Pet'h,aa in Kolhapur proper and some feudatory estates. By the new rates, introduced up to the year 1903, the total assessn1ent has been enhanced by Rs. 4,28,093 or 21·6 per cent. as under:- Assessment.

  • CHAPTER 2 the District of Dharwad Has Played a Pre-Eminent Role In
    38 Dharwad District CHAPTER 2 HISTORY he district of Dharwad has played a pre-eminent role in the history of Karnataka. It was the T core region of the major dynasties that ruled in Karnataka such as the Badami Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Kalyana Chalukyas and the Adilshahis of Bijapur. To establish their hegemony in the fertile region of Belvola-300, there have been pitched battles between the Seunas and the Hoysalas. Whenever Marathas invaded the South, they made use of the district as the highway. As the hinterland growing cotton, Hubli (Rayara Hubli or Old Hubli) was a major industrial centre. When the British in their early years of trade had founded a factory at Kadwad on the banks of the Kali, the supply of textile to the factory was through old Hubli. There was a land route from Hubli to Kadra, the higher point of the Kali (till which the river was navigable) and it was through this route that merchandise from Dharwad, Bijapur and Raichur was transported. Products of thousands of textile looms from Dharwad, Bijapur and Raichur could reach the port through Hubli. In the south, Haveri and Byadgi had communication with the Kumta port. Chilly cultivation introduced into India by the Portuguese was raised here and after the British took over, transportation of cotton and chillies was made through Kumta from Byadgi and Haveri. Haveri was the main centre of cardamom processing and for final transport to Kumta. Byadgi chilly earned the name Kumta chilly due to its export from Kumta port. In England Kumta cotton was a recognised variety though it came from the Dharwad region.

In accordance with Article 21 of. the Convention of 1931 for limiting the Manufacture and regulating the Distribution of Narcotic Drugs, the Acting Secretary-General has the honour to communicate the above-mentioned report to the parties to the Convention. The report is also communicated to other States and to the Advisory Committee on Traffic in Opium and other Dangerous Drugs. (For the form of annual reports, see document.0.C .1600). NOTE.- Wherever figures for the calendar year‘-1942 are not available they have been given for the Hindi Sammat 1999 which corresponds closely to the British Indian financial year 1942-43. In certain cases they have.also been given for the State financial year 1941-42 which generally began either from October 1st or November 1 st, 1941. 1. General position regarding use., manufacture and sale of each drug separately.- The position during the year under report was practically the same as reported in the ’Note' for the previous year. The States are now fully conscious of the evil effects of drug addiction and the measures which they have adopted to suppress this pernicious habit have been-satisfactory.

The Code of Civil Procedure (Amendment) Act, 1951 (No. Changes in II of 1951) has substituted new Sections 83 to 87B in the Law. Code for the old sections 83 to 87. The changes made in the law on the subject should be carefully studied. 2. (1) Alien friends may sue in any court of competent Aliens. jurisdiction as if they were citizens of India. Alien enemies can also sue in the like manner but with the permission of the Central Government Provided they are residing in India. Every person residing and carrying on business without a licence of the Central Government in a foreign country at war with India, is for this purpose, deemed to be an alien enemy residing in a foreign country (Section 83). (2) The Provisions in this part of the Code are silent as to suits against aliens, whether friends or enemies. Such suits would be governed by the general provisions of Civil Procedure Code. 3. (1) Any 'foreign State' can sue in a competent court in Foreign States and Foreign India to enforce a private right vested in the Ruler or Rulers. in any of its officers in his public capacity. (Section 84.) The Central Government can appoint recognised agents for such Foreign Rulers by whom appearances, acts and applications under the Code may be made on behalf of such Ruler. The appointment can be for a specified suit or suits or for all such suits in which the Ruler may be a party.

    Chapter-lV Chapter - IV A PROFILE OF SELECTED VILLAGES IN SANGLI DISTRICT 4.1 Introduction Sangli is one of the Districts in the state of Maharashtra. Sangli District was formed in 1949 by separating Talukas from old Satara District. Two more Talukas Miraj and .lath were formed out of the part erstwhile Indian state and merged into the District, after this merger it was named as south Satara District. However, since 1960 the District has been renamed as Sangli. In 1965, two Talukas viz. Miraj and Khanapur were splited and two new Talukas viz. Kavathe Mahankal and Atpadi respectively were added to the original set up of six Talukas Palus Taiuka was established in die year, after this in 2003-04 the Kadepur Taiuka was established. (Patil V.A., 2009, p. 22) The District of Sangli is a recent creation made as late as in 1949. It was then known as south Satara and it has been renamed as Sangli in 1961. It is partly made up of a few Talukas which once formed part of the old Satara District and partly of the states and jogirs belonging to Patavardhans and Dafles which come to be merged during the post-independence period. 4.2 Location It is one of the least developed Districts of the Maharashtra state situated in southern Maharashtra. The exact geographical location of the District is given as under.
