SUlmmary Figures by Talukas and Petas q6--q8 Pr~mary Census Abstlact~' Small Scale Industries Census-Employment in Establishments 1951 DISTRICT CENSUS HANDBOOK DISTRICT BELGAUM Belgaum district consisted, at the time of the 195 I Census of the area of Ie former Belgaum district of Bombay Province (except for 7 villages trans rred to Kolhapur district, 4 villages transferred to Bijapur district and villages transferred to Satara South district), with the addition of 8 villages : the former Jamkhandi State, 4 villages of the former Miraj Senior State, villages of the former Miraj Junior State, 64 villages of the former Sangli :ate, 91 villages of the former'Kolhapur Stat~, 33 villages of the former 'amdurg State, 4 villages of the former Jath State, 29 villages of the former urundwad Senior State, 23 villages of the former Kurundwad Junior State, village of the former Wadi Jahagir, 3 villages of Dharwar district and (j villages of Badami taluka of Bijapur district, . The .district had a 195 I population of 1,726,908 and an area of ,523.8 square miles, according to the area figures furnished by the Sur ~yor General of India. I This Handbook contains tables for Belgaum district, compiled after the '95 I Census of India. The main results of the 195 I Census are embodied in :11e State Tables, published for the States of Bombay, Saurashtra and Kutch. 1 this Handbook the data are exhibited in greater detail. The numbers giv~n ) tables in this publication correspond to those given in the State' Census .eport. The following tables for the district have, however, not been included ~ this Handbook :- . A- II Variation in population during fifty years. A-IV Towns classified by population with variations since 1901. D-IV Migrants. In the E-summary table, some columns have been omitted. In the case of the C-series of tables, except C-I, the data were extracted on ~e basis of a sample count of approximately 10% of the census slips instead . a full count of all the slips. The C-I table was prepared from a four per :nt sample of the households recorded in the National Register of Citizens flating to each town or village. : In 194 I, the population figures were exhibited according to communi es in the 'Village Handbooks' published by the Government of Bombay. ~ 195 I, t~e basis of classification at the Census was changed from a social to ~ economIc one, and the figures for villages given in the Primary Census bstracts and in tables A-V, B-1, B-Il, C-1I and E are according to the llowing eight Livelihood Classes :- 2 Agricultural Classes I. Cultivators of land, wholly Or mainly owned; and their _dependants. II. Cultivators of land, wholly or mainly . unowned; and their dependants. III. Cultivating labourers, and their dependants. IV. Non-cultivating owners of land: agricultural rent recelvers; 'lrrd their dependants. Non-Agricultural Classt>s Persons (including dependants) who derive their principal means of livelihood from:- V. Production other than cultivation. VI. Commerce. vn. Transport. VIII. Other services and miscellaneous sources. Dependants, whether earning or non-earning, were classified at tHe; Census according to the principal means of livelihood of the persons on whotn they were dependent. The Primary Census Abstracts which contain basic information in res pect of every village and town have been arranged according to Talukas and Petas, units into which every district is divided for administrative purposes~ The taluka was, however, too small a unit to adopt for preparing the main Census tables. Therefore, in the B, C and D series of tables figures. have been given for tracts and not for. talukas and petas. Before sorting the census slips and tabulating the results, tracts were formed by combining the rural and urban areas of two or more talukas or petas. The tracts into which Belgaum district was divided for this purpose are shown below :- Rural Tracts I. Rural areas of Belgaum and Chandgad talukas. 2. Rural areas of Khanapur, Parasgad and Sampgaon talukas. 3. Rural areas of Hukeri and Chikodi talukas. 4. Rural areas of Gokak and Ramdurg talukas. 5. Rural areas of Athni taluka and Raibag peta. 3 Urban Tracts I. Urban areas of Belgaum, Khanapur, Parasgad and Sampgaon talukas. 2. Urban areas of Hukeri and Chikodi talukas. 3. Urban areas of Gokak, Athni and Ramdurg talukas, and Raibag peta. Urban areas comprise the towns shown in table A-V. Shortly before the 1951 Population Census, a Census of Small Indust ries was taken, and the results of this census are given in the table called "Small Scale Industries Census-Employment in Establishments," included in this Handbook. The intention was to find out something about Cottage and Home Industries and small workshops. The larger establishments, that is, power lIsing establishments with 10 or more workers. and non-power using estab lishments with 20 or more workers were excluded from the scope of the enquiry as they nOW submit returns under the Factory Act. The enquiry did not concern itself also with workers functioning on their own and not employing other people, except when looms were used. The number of villages shown in column 3 IS the number of revenue villages, excluding uninhabited villages and villages which form part of municipal areas. 3. In general, a town means a municipal area, cantonment area or a place which has a popubtion of 5,000 or more inhahitants and exhibits urhan characteristics.
