According to the aim of the 1st Edition, the conference will be an opportunity for Italian hydrogeologists to exchange ideas and knowledge on diversified groundwater issues. The IAH Chapter organized the 2nd Edition to ensure the continuation of this stimulating debate within the scientific and professional community, giving priority to proposals and ideas of young hydrogeologists. This Abstract Volume contains abstracts of technical oral and poster contribution accepted to the FLOWPATH 2014, and of the invited keynotes presentations. The abstracts were evaluated by the members of the Scientific and Organizing Committees. More than 80 abstracts have been submitted for oral or poster presentations, mainly but not only by Italian hydrogeologists. Significant and interesting contributions were also received from many counties such as Algeria, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Guatemala, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Tunisia, USA. FLOWPATH 2014 focuses on four themes of great importance: 1. Contaminant Hydrogeology, 2. Groundwater Quality Protection, 3. Hydrogeology of Mineral and Thermal Waters, 4. Climate Change and Groundwater Sustainability. The Table of Contents of the Abstract Volume is organized according to the four topics of the conference. Within each topic, the abstract of the keynote lecture opens the Session and is followed by the technical contributions in alphabetical order of the first Author’s name. In order to facilitate the use of the volume, the Index of Authors is placed at the end of the volume.     Map 44 Latium-Campania Compiled by N. Purcell, 1997 Introduction The landscape of central Italy has not been intrinsically stable. The steep slopes of the mountains have been deforested–several times in many cases–with consequent erosion; frane or avalanches remove large tracts of regolith, and doubly obliterate the archaeological record. In the valley-bottoms active streams have deposited and eroded successive layers of fill, sealing and destroying the evidence of settlement in many relatively favored niches. The more extensive lowlands have also seen substantial depositions of alluvial and colluvial material; the coasts have been exposed to erosion, aggradation and occasional tectonic deformation, or–spectacularly in the Bay of Naples– alternating collapse and re-elevation (“bradyseism”) at a staggeringly rapid pace. Earthquakes everywhere have accelerated the rate of change; vulcanicity in Campania has several times transformed substantial tracts of landscape beyond recognition–and reconstruction (thus no attempt is made here to re-create the contours of any of the sometimes very different forerunners of today’s Mt. Vesuvius). To this instability must be added the effect of intensive and continuous intervention by humanity. Episodes of depopulation in the Italian peninsula have arguably been neither prolonged nor pronounced within the timespan of the map and beyond. Even so, over the centuries the settlement pattern has been more than usually mutable, which has tended to obscure or damage the archaeological record. More archaeological evidence has emerged as modern urbanization spreads; but even more has been destroyed. What is available to the historical cartographer varies in quality from area to area in surprising ways.

    Atlante Castellano strutture fortificate del Verbano Cusio Ossola Commissione scientifica Micaela Viglino Davico, Andrea Bruno jr., Enrico Lusso, Gian Giorgio Massara, Francesco Novelli Schedatori Andrea Bruno jr., Enrico Lusso Atlante castellano Strutture fortificate della provincia del Verbano Cusio Ossola La ricerca sulle strutture fortificate nella provincia del Verbano Cusio Ossola è la prosecuzione degli studi (anch’essi supportati dalla Compagnia di San Paolo, cui va la nostra gratitudine) per le province di Torino, Cuneo, Biella, Vercelli, studi da tempo conclusi, e quindi in parte pubblicati1 in una collana di volumi che si auspica sia estensibile a tutto il Piemonte. La ricerca, cui la Sezione Piemonte e Valle d’Aosta ha aderito sin dal nascere (2002), si rifà infatti al progetto dell’Istituto Italiano dei Castelli per la realizzazione in campo nazionale di un Atlante castel- lano che permetterà una omologazione per tutte le realtà italiane, tramite un co- mune programma informatizzato, concretizzandosi in un insieme di schede, identi- ficabili per regioni, province e comuni di tutto il territorio nazionale. La struttura delle schede Le singole schede recano anzitutto i dati anagrafici della struttura fortificata, arti- colati in varie voci (provincia, comune, località, oggetto, proprietà, destinazione d’uso). Il settore Sintesi storica tende poi a enucleare, dalla storia, le fasi salienti dalle quali, nei secoli, sono state determinate le principali trasformazioni del manu- fatto, trasformazioni verificate dal vero come si testimonia nel successivo settore Descrizione. In quest’ultimo campo, oltre all’oggetto architettonico, viene analiz- zato il suo contesto ambientale, leggendone le valenze – in positivo o in negativo – additive a quelle del soggetto principale.
