Facebook // Twitter // Instagram Ike Willis, Frank Zappa’s lead vocalist and guitarist, appeared on over 30 albums and is most recognized for his performances on Zappa records such Joe's Garage (as the voice of Joe), Tinsel Town Rebellion, You Are What You is, and The Man from Utopia, and as the main character and narrator in Zappa's conceptual musical, “Thing-Fish.” As one of the longest playing members in any Zappa ensemble, Ike is still touring internationally and playing the music just as Frank had asked him to just before his untimely death in 1993. Watch Ike Willis perform “Outside Now” with Frank Zappa Ike Willis Homepage W.U.T.C.T.G. Facebook // Twitter // Instagram We Used to Cut the Grass is a unique brass-and-percussion-heavy ensemble performing music ranging from high energy afrobeat to difficult contemporary music; their audiences seamlessly shift from heavy grooving to staring with their mouths and ears wide open. Started as a duo between the neurotic multi-instrumentalist/arranger Cody McCorry and malnourished drummer Seamus Leonhardt, the ensemble has always had a lust for challenge and a taste for the bizarre. As the two quickly developed a following in Asbury Park, shows became crowded and hectic, and the group responded in kind by adding more melodic instruments with a heavy focus on brass (including trombonist and co-arranger Ian Gray) and a second drummer/percussionist, the cro-magnon Kevin Grossman, purported to be over seven feet tall on a good, sunny day. The group has since expanded to a ten piece ensemble, performing arrangements both meticulous and accessible with five horns, vibraphone, guitar, bass and two drummer/percussionists, and occasionally collaborating with other groups such as the Vanguard Strings for larger ensemble work. Watch We Used to Cut the Grass perform Igor Stravinsky's “Tango” Ike Willis Homepage W.U.T.C.T.G. YOU ARE WHAT YOU IS; YOU IS WHAT YOU AM:1 INDIAN STATUS FOR THE PURPOSE OF FEDERAL CRIMINAL JURISDICTION AND THE CURRENT SPLIT IN THE COURTS OF APPEALS Brian L. Lewis* INTRODUCTION Who is an Indian for purposes of criminal prosecution in the United States’ federal courts under the Major Crimes Act, 18 U.S.C. § 1153?2 The statute does not say. While seemingly straightforward, the answer to this question may be complicated and uncertain. Moreover, if one is in the Eighth Circuit or the Ninth Circuit, the answer may differ. Historically, the test from U.S. v. Rogers3 determined Indian status for federal criminal prosecution. However, over time, as political, institutional and demo- graphic conditions changed, so did the test. Congress’ enactment of the Major Crimes Act, which was based on alarmism and devoid of a doctrinal foundation, changed the test for In- dian status and how it is applied. In the aftermath of the Court’s decision 1. FRANK ZAPPA, YOU ARE WHAT YOU IS (Zappa Records 1981). * Brian L. • An Experiment in Multidisciplinary Teaching: the Musical Theatre of Frank Zappa
An Experiment in Interdisciplinary Teaching: The Music Theatre of Frank Zappa Paul Carr and Richard Hand, University of Glamorgan Project Report, June 2006 The global aim of this project was to investigate the viabilities of interdisciplinary teaching with undergraduates in the area of Drama and Popular Music: these are separate programs of study at the University of Glamorgan albeit within the same Department of Performing Arts. Popular Music is a relatively new degree scheme that commenced delivery in 2004, while Drama is well established, having been a single subject since the early 1990s. This report will examine the process of our multidisciplinary teaching experiment, and measure its effectiveness against the project aims set out below: • Enable staff and students from different disciplines to work together • Assist the assimilation and awareness of sister disciplines in order to discover commonality, and to learn from each other • Present a challenge for teaching staff who have extensive teaching experience in their own discipline but are new to academic investigation of colleague’s expertise • Begin the experimental and radical extension of the curriculum, with a view to develop other interdisciplinary modules and, ultimately, degree programmes The units chosen for this experiment were a final level module on the BA (Hons) Drama entitled American Theatre, and Ensemble Studies 3, drawn from the BA (Hons) Popular Music degree. The former module runs for a whole year and covers American theatre and live performance from the early twentieth century until the present day. A substantial and traditionally popular area of study within the module is the study of 1960-80s drama and performance which covers dramatists and theatre-makers like Sam Shepard, August Wilson and David Mamet and addresses topics such as the Vietnam war, the Civil Rights movement and AIDS.

In the final analysis, the ringmaster of freaks, a mother to the North American counterculture and champion of outsiders would find himself outnumbered and outmanoeuvred by the rising tide of ‘plastic people’. The nature and efficacy of Zappa’s last formal political stand at this juncture is the concern of this chapter.
