In 1988 Frank Zappa toured with a twelve-piece band that had rehearsed for months, learned a repertoire of over 100 songs and played an entirely different set each night. The first live album compiled from various performances on Frank Zappa's 1988 world tour (his final outing), Broadway the Hard Way is composed mostly of new, vocal-oriented material. • An Experiment in Multidisciplinary Teaching: the Musical Theatre of Frank Zappa
An Experiment in Interdisciplinary Teaching: The Music Theatre of Frank Zappa Paul Carr and Richard Hand, University of Glamorgan Project Report, June 2006 The global aim of this project was to investigate the viabilities of interdisciplinary teaching with undergraduates in the area of Drama and Popular Music: these are separate programs of study at the University of Glamorgan albeit within the same Department of Performing Arts. Popular Music is a relatively new degree scheme that commenced delivery in 2004, while Drama is well established, having been a single subject since the early 1990s. This report will examine the process of our multidisciplinary teaching experiment, and measure its effectiveness against the project aims set out below: • Enable staff and students from different disciplines to work together • Assist the assimilation and awareness of sister disciplines in order to discover commonality, and to learn from each other • Present a challenge for teaching staff who have extensive teaching experience in their own discipline but are new to academic investigation of colleague’s expertise • Begin the experimental and radical extension of the curriculum, with a view to develop other interdisciplinary modules and, ultimately, degree programmes The units chosen for this experiment were a final level module on the BA (Hons) Drama entitled American Theatre, and Ensemble Studies 3, drawn from the BA (Hons) Popular Music degree. The former module runs for a whole year and covers American theatre and live performance from the early twentieth century until the present day. A substantial and traditionally popular area of study within the module is the study of 1960-80s drama and performance which covers dramatists and theatre-makers like Sam Shepard, August Wilson and David Mamet and addresses topics such as the Vietnam war, the Civil Rights movement and AIDS.

Frank Zappa – Halloween 81 (67:53 + 63:56 + 58:13 + 73:26 + 76:51 +76:52, 6 CDs,Zappa Family Trust, 2020) He’s back to thrill and chill you! At The Palladium New York 1981“).

  • Frank Zappa and the Orchestra Question: Dissonant Clatter Or Well-Crafted Design?
FRANK ZAPPA AND THE ORCHESTRA QUESTION: DISSONANT CLATTER OR WELL-CRAFTED DESIGN? CHANAN HANSPAL Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of South Wales for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy. 2016 ABSTRACT This study offers an insight into the orchestral music of Frank Zappa and his unique approach to composition. In Chapter 1, The Fieldwork So Far, I present an extensive annotated bibliography of selected Zappa research to illustrate the multiple forms of discourse generated by the composer’s work. While this chapter examines various books and articles written about Zappa, it also illustrates the imbalance between critical theory and musicology. Chapter 2, Structure, Concepts and the Analytical Approach, describes analytical methods used as a rationale to determine modes of consistency across the studied pieces herein. As well as describing the analytical approach, I offer to align the conceptuality and design of the Calder Mobile with Zappa’s theory of weights, balances, measured tensions and releases by providing specific extracts of compositions where these concepts can be seen to exist. In chapter 3, I present the first analysis in this study of “Pedro’s Dowry”, a highly dissonant piece of music that builds on the idea of thematic and fragmental repetition. Chapter 4 is an analysis of “The Perfect Stranger”, a piece that demonstrates extensive use of Zappa’s Chord Bible. The chords are dense scalar derived structures exploiting both the octatonic and Minor Lydian scales, yet retaining fragmental and sectional repetition techniques. The analysis of “Bob in Dacron” in chapter 5 illuminates the process of intervallic manipulation and confirms the importance of recurrent ideas dispersed throughout.

  • Frank Zappa and Musical Theatre: Ugly Ugly O’Phan Annie and Really Deep, Intense, Thought-Provoking Broadway Symbolism
Frank Zappa and musical theatre: ugly ugly o’phan Annie and really deep, intense, thought-provoking Broadway symbolism. Paul Carr and Richard J. Hand, University of Glamorgan At first glance it probably seems implausible if not preposterous to associate Frank Zappa (1940-93) with Musical Theatre. However, although he is generally recognised as a significant figure in the broad history of Rock music, his idiosyncrasy makes his output genuinely unique in comparison to conventional Rock oeuvres. Specifically, not only was Zappa renowned for being a highly theatrical performer and artist but one of the key distinguishing features in his work is a preoccupation with narrative and it is through the consideration of narrative that we are most able to conceptualise his work as Musical Theatre. On a microcosmic level, a sense of dramatic narrative informs many of Zappa’s songs; but on a macrocosmic level, too, his oeuvre as a whole can be interpreted as containing a narrative continuity. Moreover, the concept structure of Zappa’s albums – quintessentially in Joe’s Garage, Acts 1, 2 and 3 (1979) and Thing-Fish (1984) – creates an extended (and again dramatic) narrative that is more akin to the structure of Musical Theatre than conventional pop and rock album structuring. In addition, Zappa demonstrates an acute awareness of performance traditions and genres outside of those which, obviously, appertain to popular music and classical music: for example, Thing- Fish is an explicit exploration of Broadway Musical Theatre. This essay will propose that the work of Frank Zappa should be considered as Musical Theatre through a detailed critical investigation of the artist and the oeuvre.

THE BEST COVERS YOU NEVER HEARD IN YOUR LIFE John Anthony The album The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Live features a wide variety of covers including “Stairway to Heaven,” “Ring of Fire,” “Purple Haze,” “Sunshine of Your Love,” “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” and the “Theme From ‘Bonzana.’” This album also features many of Zappa’s compositions spanning his entire career including “Andy,” “Zomby Woof,” “Cosmik Debris,” and “The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue.” This paper examines the covers “Ring of Fire,” “Purple Haze,” and “Sunshine of Your Love” and how by removing important authentic elements found in the original recordings, Zappa was able to create completely new arrangements. Ring of Fire “Ring of Fire” was recorded by Johnny Cash in 1963. The instrumentation for this recording includes two trumpets, two female vocalists, two acoustic guitars, acoustic bass, and drum set. The song is in the key of G and has a tempo of quarter-note equals approximately 104. The overall stylistic aesthetic of Cash’s arrangement is introduced in the four bar introduction. The time signature alternates between 3/4 and 4/4 while two trumpets play melodic material in a mariachi style. Throughout the rest of the song, the trumpets use this melodic idea as a call and response to Cash’s vocals.
