Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract. Light in stationary lift nets (SLN) is important to the extent that it can determine the composition of species, size and number of fish caught. Different types of light are often used in aggregating certain types of fish. This study aims to find the best type of light for SLN and to determine the characteristics of the catch between light emitting diode (LED) and kerosene lights. The results showed that there were no significant differences in species composition of fish caught in both LED and kerosene lights. These types of lights do not affect the composition of fish species, but have a significant effect on the amount of catch. The most caught fish (target species) were short mackerel (Rastrelliger brachysoma) and yellowstripe scad (Selaroides leptolepis). The SLN operated with kerosene lights caught short mackerel (R. brachysoma) and yellowstripe scad (S. leptolepis) of bigger size compared to SLN with LED lights. The average length and weight of short mackerel caught with kerosene lights were 146.3 mm and 37.17 grams, respectively. The average length and weight of yellowstripe scad (S. leptolepis) caught with kerosene lights were 117.04 mm and 21.5 grams, respectively. However, only a small portion of catch, 4.5%, had already reached its mature size (Lm), while the rest of the catch (95.5%) had not reached its mature size. -

Manning * Introduction As part of a broad program of studies on the larger Crustacea of West Pakistan and the Ai'abian Sea, one of us (N.T.) initiated a survey of the Stomatopoda occurring off the coast of West Pakistan. Analysis of preliminary collections indicated that the stomatopod fauna of this area is richer in numbers of species than is evident from the literature. Through correspondence in 1966, we decided to collaborate on a review of the Pakistani stomatopods; this report is the result of that collaboration. This paper is based prhnarily on collections made by and housed in the Zoology Department, University of Karachi. Specimens in the collections of the Central Fisheries Department, Karachi, and the Zoology Department, University of Sind, were also studied. Unfortu- nately, only a few specimens from the more extensive stomatopod collections of the Zoological Survey Department, Karachi, were available for study. Dutton Series Overview This China Maritime Report on Gwadar is the second in a series of case studies on China’s Indian Ocean “strategic strongpoints” (战略支点). People’s Republic of China (PRC) officials, military officers, and civilian analysts use the strategic strongpoint concept to describe certain strategically valuable foreign ports with terminals and commercial zones owned and operated by Chinese firms.1 Each case study analyzes a different port on the Indian Ocean, selected to capture geographic, commercial, and strategic variation.2 Each employs the same analytic method, drawing on Chinese official sources, scholarship, and industry reporting to present a descriptive account of the port, its transport infrastructure, the markets and resources it accesses, and its naval and military utility. -

Purse seines with 2.5 cm mesh size are used to surround the fish, using fishing boats ranging from 18 to 26 m in overall length. Fishing grounds are located in the central Gulf of Thailand at a depth of 25–60 m. Catch per unit effort (CPUE), species composition and size of economically important species were analyzed by collecting data from fishing boats using FADs at nine main fishing ports along the Gulf of Thailand between January and December 2007. The results show that the average CPUE was 3351 kg day−1,which was composed of 88% pelagic fishes, 5% demersal fishes, 4% trash fishes and 2% squids and cuttlefishes. The major pelagic species were Indian mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta), Indian scad (Decapterus russelli) and bigeye scad (Selar crumenophthalmus), which made up 25%, 24% and 8% of the total catch, respectively, while neritic tunas (kawakawa; Euthynnus affinis, frigate tuna; Auxis thazard thazard and longtail tuna; Thunnus tonggol) made up 8% of the total catch. -

Potts (Sydney) Introduction Although none of the Achaemenid royal inscriptions listing the satrapies (Junge 1942; Lecoq 1997) under Darius (DB §6; DNa §3; DNe, DPe §2; Dse §3; DSm §2; DSaa §4; the incomplete DSv §2), Xerxes (XPh §3) or Artaxerxes II (A2Pa) refer to them, the islands of the Erythraean Sea appear in two important Greek sources. 1. In Book 3, where the famous ‘Steuerliste’, believed by many to reflect Darius I’s satrapal reforms (Hist. 3.89), appears, Herodotus says: ‘The fourteenth province consisted of the Sagartians, Sarangians, Thamanaeans, Utians, Mycians and the inhabitants of the islands in the Erythraean Sea where the Persian king settles the people known as the dispossessed, who together contributed 600 talents’ (Hist. 3.93). 2. In Book 4 Herodotus writes, ‘Persians live all the way south as far as the sea which is called the Erythraean Sea’ (Hist. 4.37). 3. In Book 7 Herodotus describes the infantry contingents which fought for Xerxes at Doriscus. He says: ‘The tribes who had come from the islands in the Erythraean Sea to take part in the expedition - the islands where the Persian king settles the peoples known as the ‘dispossessed’ - closely resembled the Medes in respect of both clothing and weaponry. These islanders were commanded by Mardontes the son of Bagaeus1, who was one of the Persian commanders a year later at the battle of Mycale, where he died’(Hist. 7.80). 4. Finally, in Arrian’s (Anab. Alex. 3.8.5) description of the forces of Darius III at Issus, we read, ‘The tribes bordering on the Erythraean Sea were directed by Orontobates, Ariobarzanes and Orxines’. -

Twenty-two reciprocally monophyletic sister- species pairs were identified: 64% were allopatric, and the remainder were sympatric. Age of divergence was similar for allopatric and sympatric species pairs. Sympatric sister pairs displayed greater divergence in morphol- ogy, ecology, and sexually dimorphic colour patterns than did allopatric pairs, suggesting that both genetic drift in allopatric species pairs and ecologically adaptive divergence between members of sympatric pairs have played a role in diversification. Basal species typically have small geographical ranges and are restricted to geographically and ecologically peripheral reef habitats. We found little evidence that a single dominant process has driven diversification, nor did we detect a pattern of discrete, sequential stages of diversification in relation to habitat, ecology, and reproductive biology. The evolution of Chlorurus and Scarus has been complex, involving a number of speciation processes. -
