Lead Directing Doubles … (danger danger … Will Robinson) From Phil Power

At a recent South Perth Saturday afternoon Diamond. With only Diamonds left in their hand bridge session an amazing set of boards had been North would have had to give me a third D trick. produced. In my view this hand gives a valuable lesson to There were 6/6 hands 6/5 hands, singletons, those players wanting to give partner a lead voids, slams and grand slams at virtually every directing double when the opposition have the table throughout the 28 boards played during the bulk of the points. Make sure your suit is worth a session. lead directing double. Only 9 boards failed to produce a game or slam 6 Diamonds to the AQ wasn't enough. North and even some of those showed wild distribution. needed at least AKJTxx or AQJTxx . The board featured here was opened by my They then have 5 D tricks and 1 trick from partner, Dave Munro, sitting east. My intention was to bid Brd 2 ♠ 82 2D as a transfer to hearts and then bid 3S Dlr E ♥ 52 showing a 5/4 hand in the majors with game Vul NS ♦ AQ7632 values. ♣ JT8

Had we been vulnerable I would have bid 3NT but we were not vulnerable so I passed. This is where knowing the score table helps. I felt 2DXX would beat a Non-vulnerable game contract score of +400 but I wasn’t sure about it beating a vulnerable game score of +600. As it turns out - 2DXX vulnerable scores +760. I actually misplayed the hand and only came to 8 tricks whereas Deep said that 9 tricks were available … but I made my contract for +560 and a top board … and a visit from the Director after his scoring program alerted him to a possible anomaly. 9 tricks are makeable by taking North side suits off them and then playing a

Capel Rockingham Bridge Club Inc Goodbye By Di Brooks

Just a few weeks before my Darling and I pick up sticks and relocate to Rockingham. It's times like Corner McClarty Road & Watts Road these when you see the amount of treasures you Shoalwater have gathered over the years. Rooms are almost stacked with boxes, mostly my stuff, as Husband's items are mainly in the shed. CONGRESS 2017 I felt ashamed to admit that I had packed 23 February 11 - 12 packages of books and D.V.Ds, until a friend reported her total of kitchen items were packed ENTRIES via BAWA Website: www.bawa.asn.au in thirty boxes! Well, this just goes to show that this dear little wifey doesn't spend that much PROGRAM time in the kitchen. I do have stacks of bridge notes and booklets for lectures as well as Saturday 11 prepared boards. Then again, I've not started on my beading or knitting essentials. (No wonder we Congress Pairs (Swiss Pairs) -10 am are upsizing!) $40.00 per player (includes lunch) - pay at Last weekend we attended the wedding of one of the table on the day our granddaughters, the service being held in Sunday 12 Claremont. The day was a tad warm but nothing deterred the bridal arrangements. Everything Congress Teams -10 am was perfect. The bride was stunning, the groom $40.00 per player (includes lunch) - pay at handsome, the bridal party could have graced the the table on the day front cover of any magazine. (Who says I'm prejudiced!) I asked myself … Where was the cheeky two year old that gave us such pleasure 20 TABLES with her antics? After the auction given, North is worth game. South is competing opposite possibly no values and North has 6 HCP and great shape. Which game should North choose? It is tempting to jump to 4S, but South’s double has not guaranteed four NORFOLK ISLAND spades. OCTOBER 30 - NOVEMBER 6, 2017 In such situations, it is often best to bid the opponents’ suit to show values and indicate doubt as to the best contract. One option is 4D for North. If partner continues with 4H, North removes that to 4S, offering partner the choice between 4S and 5C. With the actual hand South will pass 4S, which makes comfortably.

Kendenup Restricted One Day Congress From Heather Fergie

Our fourth and most successful congress was AFTERNOON PLATE: held on the 5th of November in our new club rooms. The shire and a local committee have been working together to refurbish what is basically a huge old historic shed. This large building was the past site of agricultural shows, sporting events, and large gatherings however it had fallen into disrepair and is now in the long process of being brought back to life! Our bridge club now has a large carpeted, air-conditioned space with new toilets and showers, as well as facilities for 1st Vivienne Davis and Alison Gunton caravans to park in the lovely bush surroundings outside. Next we will work on a new kitchen and a wall to separate us from the cold air in the rest of the shed space. Our congress was a great success with all keen to return next year and possibly bring more with them when they have spread the word about our great camping facilities and hospitality!

This year we were also fortunate enough to have the services of Neville Walker who directed the nd day with patience and skill. Thankyou Neville! 2 Connie Daly and Pam Goodman We are a very small club and a congress with 15 FINAL: tables in a new venue takes quite a lot of work. Special thanks should go to Betty and Gillian who baked the most delicious pies ever! The results were: MORNING QUALIFYING:
