Guardo comigo a tua expressão de orgulho ao ver a dissertação impressa e a lembrança do teu último olhar terno... 6 RESUMO A não aleatoriedade da estrutura de uma comunidade pode ser o reflexo de regras de montagem. Expressas através de um determinado conjunto de condições ambientais e de traços das espécies, as regras definiriam os padrões das comunidades no espaço e no tempo. Dentre os diversos ambientes aquáticos, os estuários, através da variabilidade abiótica natural do seu sistema podem fornecer a identificação das condições para montagem das taxocenoses de peixes. Nesse sentido, o presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar como características ambientais estuarinas que variam no espaço e período hidrológicos podem influenciar a montagem de comunidades de peixes estuarinos tropicais. Temos como hipóteses que o gradiente de salinidade no ecótono estuário-oceano é o principal filtro promotor dos padrões de distribuição das guildas de uso estuarino, e que a diversidade da ictiofauna é mediada pelo investimento do espaço como recurso. O estudo foi realizado em áreas rasas dos sistemas estuarinos da Baía de Todos os Santos, Estuário do Serinhaém na Baía de Camamu e no Complexo Estuarino Caravelas, localizados na região hidrográfica do Atlântico Leste no Brasil. Os resultados apontam um padrão comum de uso estuarino baseado nos efeitos principalmente da salinidade sobre a distribuição das guildas, também evidenciado através dos padrões de importância relativa das espécies nas localidades. A riqueza das espécies e abundância dos indivíduos no ambiente estuarino foi positivamente relacionada à largura da plataforma adjacente, e o aumento da abundância de indivíduos também relacionado à largura da boca do estuário, no entanto, tendendo a aumentar à medida que a largura diminui. A diversidade e os padrões de estabelecimento sob perspectiva da importância relativa das espécies parecem mediados também pela magnitude das pressões antropogênicas. Palavras-chave: Montagem de comunidades, ictiofauna, estuários, áreas rasas. 7 ABSTRACT The non-randomness of the structure of a community may be the reflection of assembly rules. Expressed through a given set of environmental conditions and traits of species, the rules would set the standards of communities in space and time. Among the various aquatic environments, the estuaries through the natural abiotic variability of its system can provide the identification of the conditions for assembling fish taxocenoses. In this sense, the present study aimed to investigate as estuarine environmental characteristics that vary in hydrological space and period may influence the assembly of tropical estuarine fish communities. We hypothesize that the salinity gradient in the estuary-ocean ecotone is the main filter promoting the distribution patterns of the estuarine-use guilds, and that the diversity of the ichthyofauna is mediated by the investment of space as a resource. The study was realized in shallow areas of the estuarine systems of Todos os Santos Bay, estuary of Serinhaém in the Camamu Bay and Estuarine Complex Caravelas, located in the Eastern Atlantic hydrographic region in Brazil. The results point to a common pattern of estuarine use based on the effects of salinity on the distribution of guilds, also evidenced by the patterns of relative importance of the species in the localities. The species richness and abundance of individuals in the estuarine environment was positively related to the width of the adjacent platform, and the increase in the abundance of individuals also related to the mouth width of the estuary; however, tends to increase as the width decreases. Diversity and establishment patterns under the perspective of the relative importance of species also seem to be mediated by the magnitude of anthropogenic pressures. Materials and methods. Fish were collected in August and December 1996 with a Renfro beam net and an otter trawl from different habitats throughout the lagoon. FISCHTHAL Department of Biological Sciences, State University of New York at Binghamton, Binghamton, New York 13901. ABSTRACT: Of the 107 species of trematodes found in West African (Mauritania to Gabon) marine fishes, 100 are allocated to 64 genera in 24 families while seven are immature didymozoids. Many of these genera are located in most of the world's seas with the exception of the polar seas; only five are en- demic to West Africa. The data for the 41 species known from West Africa and elsewhere, and those morphologically closest to the 55 endemic species, indicate that they are very widely distributed, particularly in the Western and North Atlantic, and Mediterranean. Historical and present- day events concerning physical and biological environmental factors and their effects on actual and po- tential hosts as well as on life cycle stages of the trematodes have resulted in the geographical distribution reported. The distribution of marine fishes has been emphasized to explain in part the trematode distribu- tion.     State of research of the Osteichthyes fish related to coral reefs in the Honduran Caribbean with catalogued records Estado del conocimiento de los peces osteíctios asociados a los arrecifes de coral en el Caribe de Honduras, con registros catalogados Anarda Isabel Salgado Ordoñez1, Julio Enrique Mérida Colindres1* & Gustavo Adolfo Cruz1 ABSTRACT Research on Honduran coral reef fish has been isolated and scattered. A list of fish species related to coral reefs was consolidated to establish a compiled database with updated taxonomy. The study was conducted between October 2017 and December 2018. Using primary and secondary sources, all potential species in the Western Atlantic were considered, and their actual presence was confirmed using catalogued records published in peer-reviewed journals that included Honduras. In addition, the specimens kept in the Museum of Natural History of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras were added. Once the list was consolidated, the taxonomic status of each species was updated based on recent literature. A total of 159 species and 76 genera were registered in 32 families. The family with the most species was Labrisomidae with 27 species (17%). Five families had more than five 5 genera registered, while four 4 were represented by more than 16 species, which is equivalent to 42% genera and 51% species. Gobiidae was represented by 10 genera (13%) and 21 species (13%), of which two 2 were endemic: Tigrigobius rubrigenis and Elacatinus lobeli. In turn, Grammatidae was represented by one endemic species Lipogramma idabeli (1.8%). The species Diodon holocanthus and Sphoeroides testudineus represent the first catalogued records for Honduras.

Paddack 1 PRBD-2015-1 Preface Caribbean reefs have suffered unprecedented declines over the last several decades due to a variety of factors. Some of the most rapid and dramatic changes occurred following the region- wide die-off of the sea urchin, Diadema antillarum, in the mid-1980s, which resulted in the proliferation of algae on many reefs, especially those with few herbivorous fishes. Thirty years later, Diadema remain rare in most locations, algae are abundant on many reefs, and there is concern that fisheries targeting herbivorous fishes, especially parrotfishes, are compromising the function of many reef ecosystems. In some locations, such as the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, Bahamas, robust populations of herbivorous fishes have been associated with elevated coral recruitment and positive reef trajectories. Yet other reefs, such as those in the Florida Keys, show no signs of recovery despite abundant herbivore populations. The emerging picture suggests that impacts of herbivores on coral recovery are likely to be highly context-dependent, and that management actions targeting herbivores will vary in their ability to facilitate coral persistence and recovery. This document is intended to serve as a guide on how to manage herbivore populations to facilitate healthy, resilient coral reefs.
