The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences. -

Parrotfish can be recognised by their beak-like fused teeth which are a tightly packed mosaic. The yellowtail or redfin parrotfish occurs in two colour phases. The terminal phase (Fig. 1) is the mature male with blue to green colour, a black spot at the base of the pectoral fin, and the tail fin with a yellow centre and translucent margin. The drab or initial phase includes either mature females or immature males, and has a light grey-brown colour with a white ventral region, alternate dark and pale bars along the chin, a yellow caudal peduncle (fin base) and tail fin, and red anal and pelvic fins (Fig. 2). The juvenile has a mottled pattern (Fig. 3). Fins include ten dorsal soft rays, nine dorsal spines, three anal spines and three anal soft rays. The length of the fish is 48cm in adult males (Randall, 1996). DISTRIBUTION. The species is found mostly in the western Atlantic and the Caribbean (Fig. 4). The fish is native to Trinidad and Tobago (Rocha et al., 2012). HABITAT AND ACTIVITY. Found in marine systems. The habitat ranges from reefs to sea grass beds of depth 1-15m. They inhabit shallow as well as rocky coral reefs, generally in the high energy areas of the reef. -

Paddack 1 PRBD-2015-1 Preface Caribbean reefs have suffered unprecedented declines over the last several decades due to a variety of factors. Some of the most rapid and dramatic changes occurred following the region- wide die-off of the sea urchin, Diadema antillarum, in the mid-1980s, which resulted in the proliferation of algae on many reefs, especially those with few herbivorous fishes. Thirty years later, Diadema remain rare in most locations, algae are abundant on many reefs, and there is concern that fisheries targeting herbivorous fishes, especially parrotfishes, are compromising the function of many reef ecosystems. In some locations, such as the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, Bahamas, robust populations of herbivorous fishes have been associated with elevated coral recruitment and positive reef trajectories. Yet other reefs, such as those in the Florida Keys, show no signs of recovery despite abundant herbivore populations. The emerging picture suggests that impacts of herbivores on coral recovery are likely to be highly context-dependent, and that management actions targeting herbivores will vary in their ability to facilitate coral persistence and recovery. This document is intended to serve as a guide on how to manage herbivore populations to facilitate healthy, resilient coral reefs. Not only do scientists want to understand these changes, but also 28 predict the future of coral reefs and their capacity for resilience. In particular, the loss of 29 herbivory, due to declines in parrotfish and the sea urchin Diadema antillarum, has been 30 implicated in many studies as a proximate cause of the coral to macroalgal phase shift. However, 31 reports of the particular role of these putative herbivores have varied, with some studies claiming 32 a causal role for parrotfish, others for Diadema and still others suggesting no such relationships. -

It is genetically unique and also differs from its congeners by coloration as follows: initial phase individuals and females greyish brown to greyish red, with chin and belly paler and reddish brown scales irregularly distributed along flanks resulting in a general mottled ap- pearance; terminal phase individuals with brownish red head and upper half of anterior two-thirds of body, ventral portion of central third of body bright yellow-green, posterior third of body dark greenish gray and dark spot on upper fifth of pectoral fin base. The new species is found in rocky reefs along the coast and oceanic islands off West Africa, from Cape Verde and Senegal south to the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe and Angola. BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 68(3): 505–524, 2001 NEW TAXA PAPER A NEW PARROTFISH (SCARIDAE) FROM BRAZIL, AND REVALIDATION OF SPARISOMA AMPLUM (RANZANI, 1842), SPARISOMA FRONDOSUM (AGASSIZ, 1831), SPARISOMA AXILLARE (STEINDACHNER, 1878) AND SCARUS TRISPINOSUS VALENCIENNES, 1840 Rodrigo Leão de Moura, José Lima de Figueiredo and Ivan Sazima ABSTRACT A total of 19 species of parrotfishes (Scaridae) have been recorded from the south- western Atlantic. Nine of these species records (Sparisoma aurofrenatum, Sparisoma chrysopterum, Sparisoma rubripinne, Sparisoma viride, Scarus coelestinus, Scarus co- eruleus, Scarus iserti, Scarus taeniopterus and Scarus vetula) are based on misidentifications, and these species do not occur in the southwestern Atlantic. Of the remaining 10 species, Scarus zelindae is described as a new species, and Sparisoma frondosum (Agassiz, 1831), Sparisoma amplum (Ranzani, 1842), Sparisoma axillare (Steindachner, 1878) and Scarus trispinosus Valenciennes, 1840 are revalidated as south- western Atlantic species. Cryptotomus roseus Cope, 1871, Nicholsina usta (Valenciennes, 1840), Sparisoma atomarium (Poey, 1861), Sparisoma radians (Valenciennes, 1840) and Scarus guacamaia Cuvier, 1829 are confirmed as Brazilian records. This study shows that at least five parrotfishes add to the Brazilian-endemic reef fishes isolated from the Caribbean by the freshwater plume off the Amazon and Orinoco river mouths. There is considerable homogeneity in the western Atlantic reef fish fauna, although recent evidence indicates that the western South Atlantic harbors a sizeable portion of endemic species (Moura et al., 1999a; Floeter and Gasparini, 2000). Greenfield (1988, 1989), studying complexes of wide-ranging west Atlantic reef fishes, was the first author to remark that the known number of species restricted to the southwestern Atlantic is increasing as various groups of demersal fishes are being investigated.
