A reminder: It is not known what JCF did before he, aged 49, bought the farm “Vergenoegd” at Faure from his brother Johannes Gysbertus FAURE (1797-1869) in 1847. It is likely that he inherited the (town) farm, and farmed it until 1847. JCF married Elisabeth BRINK (1801-1835). As she died young, he then married Elisabeth MYBURGH (1812-1876), of the farm “Meerlust” at Faure. He had 2 children with Elisabeth BRINK and 6 children with Elisabeth MYBURGH.

JOHANNES ALBERTUS FAURE (1838-1902), The Honourable, MLA

The Honourable Johannes Albertus FAURE was born in Stellenbosch (FS/DRCR) or on the farm “Vergenoegd” (PC/fam), and he died on the farm. He inherited “Vergenoegd” and was a Farmer there. He was also a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of

7 the Cape Colony (ie the Parliament of the Cape Colony, before Union) for many years. He was also a Member of the Legislative Council; in total he served as a MLC for 12 years / sessions in the period 1891-1902. A newspaper cutting (Cape Times, 03.12.1890) reports that a Deputation to the government (regarding the spread of Phylloxera), representing wine farmers, and led by Dr SMUTS (MLA), were received by the Prime Minister of the Colony, The Honourable Cecil John RHODES, Prof FISCHER (Secretary for Agriculture), and The Honourable JA FAURE, MLA, Minister of Native Affairs.

On 25.04.1860, aged 21, JAF married Anna Frederika Wilhelmina BRAND (* 24.06.1839, Cape Town; ~ 24.06.1839, Cape Town; + 31.03.1920, "Vergenoegd", Faure, aged 80) [daughter of Philippus Albertus BRAND (* 05.1808; + 03.1872) and Anna Fredericka Wilhelmina MUNNIK (* 1807; 02.1885)], in Cape Town. Anna Frederika Wilhelmina BRAND was the sister of President BRAND of the OFS. A beautifully crafted Victorian “Gentleman’s Cupboard” in the family [bought by APF (1946-) from aunt Anna Wilhelmina Morkel MORGAN, nee FAURE (1916-2000), who inherited it from her father PABF (1875-1947), who inherited it from JAF (1838- 1902)] is said to be one of two made: one for Cecil John RHODES and the other for JAF. The other one is in the Cape residence of the South African President, “Grootte Schuur”. This has not been confirmed. JAF and AFWB had 5 children. PHILIP FAURE (1845-1901)

Philip was the first owner of the FAURE-owned farm “Zandvliet” at Faure (previously known as Eersterivier), Cape. He bought the farm in 1885. He never married and passed the farm on to a nephew (discussed later). The following story of the farm was researched and written by Genevieve Carmen FAURE, nee BUCHLAND (* 14.04.1939), wife of Mousley FAURE (* 10.05.1932) who, at one time, lived and farmed Front of house. Source: painting owned by Christine FAURE. Watercolour. Old slave quarters c1945. Source: “Zandvliet” with his brothers. It is verbatim, except CFA. for small changes made by APF (1946-).

“Zandvliet” lies roughly two miles south of Faure at the confluence of the Kuils and Eeerste Rivers and was one of the earliest farms in the Stellenbosch district to be granted by Simon van der Stel. The property was granted to the Reverend Petrus Kalden on 04.01.1699, almost exactly one month before the farm "Vergelegen" in Somerset West was granted. The farm "Vergenoegd" in Faure, which had been granted three years earlier, lay in close proximity. Kalden named the farm “Zandvliet”, which refers to its position on

10 the edge of a sandy veld between the sea and the Hottentots Holland Mountains but, those living at “Zandvliet” often thought it was actually because of the velocity of the South Easter which sent sand flying round the farm.

Kalden built a house on “Zandvliet” somewhere behind the fine homestead. The original home built by him was believed to be on the west side of the “werf” and there are conflicting reports of what became of this original house. As Alys Fane Trotter remarked: "The oldest buildings of the farm were being pulled down the very day I had made a pilgrimage to draw them." It is recorded that Kalden "spent large sums beautifying the garden with flowers, fruit and greens and practising viticulture". He grazed a large flock of sheep and occupied most of his time with farming activities. It was said that his sheep at “Zandvliet” meant more to him than his spiritual flock. An amusing story is told that once, when preaching at the Cape and hearing the sound of wagon wheels in the street outside, he stopped in the middle of his sermon and called to the clerk: "Prithee, my friend, look out and see whether that is my wine which is going by". Due to his neglect of his church duties Kalden was dismissed from his post and banished in 1708, at the same time as Willem Adriaan van der Stel of Vergelegen.

However, the most important aspect of Kalden's tenure was the arrival in the Cape of Sheikh Joseph. In 1694 Sheikh Joseph, a teacher of the Muslim religion and a man of enormous influence in the East, was exiled from Java to the Cape by officials Back of house. Source: Photo owned by Dairy and old slave quarters c1945. Source: Photo owned by Christine FAURE. of the Dutch East India Christine FAURE. Company. The ship Voetboeg brought him and his retinue of 49 persons to the shores of . He was accompanied by two wives, twelve children, followers and friends, attendants and slaves. The Sheikh had a remarkable reputation as a man who combined the qualities of great saintliness and warrior-like valour, and he was also attributed with the power of performing miracles. A traditional belief still held to this day by many Cape Malays is the story that on the long voyage from the East the ship's fresh water ran out and those on board, fearing that they would perish from thirst, appealed to their leader. Sheikh Joseph dipped his foot in the sea and ordered the crew to fill the casks. Buckets were lowered immediately and came up brimming with fresh water.

When the Sheikh arrived at the Cape the Governor, Simon van der Stel, was issued with strict instructions by the Dutch East India

11

Company that the Sheikh and his party were to be afforded absolutely no chance of making contact with ships passing to and from the East, and arrangements were made for the exiled Muslims to be quartered on “Zandvliet”. Some rough dwellings were erected but, apart from a small monetary allowance and rations, the Cape authorities left them more or less to their own devices to make some sort of a home for themselves in the sand dunes. Sheikh Joseph, who was 68 years old when he arrived at the Cape, devoted the greater part of his time to the practice of his religion and he died in exile at the age of 73. He was buried on a lonely hillock near the place where he had spent five years of banishment. The original tomb, built within the sound of the sea, was very simple and at one time fell into disrepair. Later the tomb and a piece of the surrounding ground were purchased by the Malay community of Cape Town. Many alterations and improvements have been made over the years and in 1925 a delicate minaret was erected nearby. The importance of Sheikh Joseph as the first person to read the Koran in the Colony must be emphasised and his tomb is a place of pilgrimage for Muslims commemorating a unique piece of history, the introduction of the Muslim faith into South Africa.

Following the departure of the Rev Kalden in 1708, Michiel Romond acquired the land and in 1710 the farm passed to his son, Gerrit. From 1717 to 1726 it belonged to Johannes Swellengrebel. He was the father of the future Governor, Hendrik. It is an interesting fact that Swellendam is named after this Hendrik Swellengrebel and his wife Helena Willemina ten Damme. While owning “Zandvliet” Swellengrebel added another farm to his holdings. This was Vogelsang, now (later owned by the Alderman family) and in 1726 he sold the farms to Willem Pas. After Pas died in 1735 the estate was passed from hand to hand until 1760 when it became part of the vast enterprises of Hendrik Cloete.

Although a great deal is written about Hendrik Cloete, “Zandvliet” is rarely mentioned, possibly due to his involvement with Nooigedacht in Stellenbosch and also the development of , which he acquired in 1778. The purchase of “Zandvliet” could have been seen as providing for his children and it may have served as a home for his family while his other homesteads were being developed. Cloete was described by Lady Anne Barnard as "one of the most opulent men of the Colony" and Mentzel referred to him as "a simple Boer". "It seems very funny," he says "to hear an obscure farmer talk of the monarchs of Europe as his customers. He sums up each one quite unaffectedly as they stand in his books. At the moment the King of Prussia is in greatest favour with him, as he had expressed himself in very complimentary terms with regard to the last shipments of wine, and has paid for them very promptly ...... "

The date of the Holbol gable of the chicken house and dovecote is around 1789, which suggest that Hendrik Cloete also developed “Zandvliet” to some degree. Referring to his Will, which bequeaths “Zandvliet” to his fifth son, Rudolph, the mention of porcelain, furniture, crockery and cutlery conjures up the impression that “Zandvliet” was well established. After Rudolph's ownership it was passed to his younger brother Pieter Louwrens and then on to his son, also named Pieter Louwrens, in 1831. He altered the homestead to its Georgian form and the outbuildings received sash windows, plated window mouldings and corrugated iron roofs .

12

His name and the date (1857) were scratched into the glass pane of the study door confirming the above.

Part of the development of the homestead is attributed to Rudolph as indicated by the autobiographical memoirs of Petrus Borchards of Stellenbosch in 1861. "Sometimes we visited the well-known place “Zandvliet” and were there received by the owner, Mr Rudolph Cloete, with great hospitality. The strand (beach) of Zwartklip was near and I have there seen in one haul upwards of 3 000 large fish caught and drawn to shore. On the estate was a large lake. The supplied an abundance of small fish, namely the carp and a beautiful white silvery fish with red tinted fins". A drawing dated 1857 shows the newly completed “Zandvliet” Georgian homestead and an older homestead set further back. The German inscription in the bottom left hand corner translates as: "May God's thunder and Man's anger avoid this house and may it meet with only peace and joy." Obviously Pieter Louwrens Cloete spent rather too much money on beautifying the farm as his insolvent estate was sold among various people in 1871.

A Johannes Gerhardus Brand appears to have purchased a major portion of “Zandvliet” although no deed of transfer is available to confirm this. Fourteen years later, in November 1885, he sold it to the first member of the FAURE family to own the property, namely Philip FAURE (1845-1901). Philip FAURE was the third son of Jacobus Christiaan FAURE, owner of the neighbouring farm Vergenoegd, which Part of werf, c1970. Source: Photo owned had been, and still is, in the FAURE family since Watercolour, c1857. Source: Owned by Christine FAURE. by Christine FAURE. 1820. From this time, “Zandvliet” remained the property of the FAURE family for five generations. Philip FAURE was not only a progressive farmer but also an astute businessman and by early 1900 he had developed “Zandvliet” into an outstanding cattle farm while keeping a consistent production of wine. In 1902 Johannes Albertus FAURE jnr, son of Johannes Albertus FAURE snr (owner of neighbouring Vergenoegd), inherited “Zandvliet” from his bachelor half uncle Philip FAURE.

During JAF's ownership “Zandvliet” continued to flourish and in 1933, on his death, his son, Albertus Johannes FAURE (known as Bertie) inherited the farm. Bertie was responsible for building the new barns on the northern boundary of the werf, the pair of round silos and for replacing the thatch with asbestos roof sheeting on the outbuildings as well as minor alterations to the homestead. Bertie FAURE had three sons and a daughter, Philip, Mousley, Felix and Christine, all of whom live in the Helderberg area. Bertie continued in the family tradition and continued to farm vineyards, dairy and vegetables on “Zandvliet”, with his sons Mousley and Felix taking over the day-to-day running of the farm in the early fifties.

13

It was a great blow to the family when the Nationalist Government expropriated “Zandvliet” and in 1969 the Community Development Board started drawing up plans for the development of a new residential area, now known as Macassar Township. The purpose of this was to accommodate the so-called "Coloureds" of the Hottentots Holland district. As the land initially developed was mainly used as pastures for the sheep and cattle, Mousley leased the property from the Department of Community Development and continued to live in the old Homestead with his wife, Genevieve, and to farm the area closest to the house. However, in 1977, they finally left “Zandvliet” as the thieving of the crops and cattle made it viably impossible to continue farming the property.

Members of Historic Somerset West and the Simon van der Stel Foundation visited “Zandvliet” in September 1976 and were shown around the farm by Mousley and Genevieve. Since their departure many studies have been undertaken and reports written on “Zandvliet” with Rey Bridgeman of Somerset West taking an active interest in the property. The National Monuments Council showed an interest in the future of “Zandvliet” werf and its buildings. They corresponded with the Stellenbosch Divisional Council pressing for maintenance programmes and no demolition of existing buildings. This resulted in the Stellenbosch Council appointing architect Gawie Fagan to investigate the possibility of converting the homestead and outbuildings into accommodation and recreational facilities. In 1984 he presented a detailed report with plans for a conference centre with accommodation, a rugby club, spa / sauna, restaurant, sports centre and golf course. Due to the high cost and lack of government funds available this proposal was never proceeded with and during the winter of 1993, due to non-maintenance of a previously erected dyke, the whole area was badly flooded. Sports fields have been developed alongside the werf and an extensive fence has been erected. The old homestead is in a very poor state of repair and is currently housing approximately six squatter families. The outbuildings surrounding the werf have all but disappeared.

ALETTA HENDRINA FAURE (1848-1918)

She became a member of the Stellenbosch DRC on 18.12.1868. AHF, called “Lettie”, was engaged to her future husband for 25 years. Each of them looked after old parents and, when their parents died, the got married and they lived at “Spier” farm, Lyndoch. On 27.09.1898, aged 49, Lettie married Andries Christoffel VAN DER BYL (* 02.03.1852, “Spier” farm, Stellenbosch; ~ 02.03.1852, Stellenbosch; + 14.05.1914, aged 62) [son of Paul Andries VAN DER BYL (* 1808: + 07.09.1887) and Elizabeth Wilhelmina HEROLD (* 24.05.1816; + 07.06.1895)], in Stellenbosch. Andries was a Farmer at “Spier”, Lyndoch, outside Stellenbosch. There were no children of the marriage. (FS/DRCR, SirPHT, DVP, HeLo, HMM, FS.)

Biographical notes (BIO1) (verbatim with small changes): He took up law as a profession, practising as a Solicitor at Paarl. In 1889 he became a Member of the House of Assembly representing the Bond for the Paarl Constituency. When, in 1890, Cecil John Rhodes formed a Cabinet in collaboration with the Bond, he became Minister of Native Affairs. He filled the post of Colonial Secretary in Rhodes' second government (1894-1896) and became known for his liberal views. When the cabinet was reshuffled in January 1896, after Rhodes had resigned following the Jameson Raid in the Transvaal Republic, he was persuaded to serve with Dr TNG te Water in Sir Gordon Sprigg's cabinet. He became Minister of Agriculture and engaged in the task of ridding the country of Rinderpest and he also contributed to the development of the fishing industry. During this period he changed his political convictions and sided with the Progressive Party in Parliament.

In the election of 1898 he did not stand for Paarl but successfully contested the Namaqualand seat for the House of Assembly. He held the seat for the next ten years. He was made a KCMG in 1895. During the Schreiner administration of 1898-1900 he joined the opposition. When Sprigg took over the reins of office in 1900 he once again served as Minister of Agriculture.

15

During the last phase of the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), he came strongly to the fore as a vigorous opponent of the movement to abrogate the Cape constitution. He was Colonial Secretary from May 1902 to February 1904 and from 1904 to 1907 served on the Commission of Enquiry into War Damages. In 1907 he accepted the appointment of Colonial Secretary in the Jameson cabinet, but since the government fell in the following year, his period of service was brief. He concluded his political career by representing Western Province on the Legislative Council from 1908 to 1910. He also had interests in the liquor trade. He was a member of the Cape Parliament for altogether 23 years and a Minister for more than 14. He was the only person, with the exception of Rhodes himself, who served in both Rhodes Ministries. When he died the Union Parliament unanimously adopted a motion of condolence, and paid Sir PHF (on right, seated) in Namaqualand near O’Kiep while on an election campaign as Secretary of Agriculture. Source: A Newspaper (APF). homage to his fine personal qualities. He lived for many years at "Highstead", Rondebosch, which was given to him for his lifetime by his friend, Cecil John Rhodes.

Tributes to Sir Pieter appeared in many newspapers (22.05.1914), including The Times, Morning Post (UK), Daily Telegraph (UK), Financial Times (UK), Financier, Nottingham Guardian (UK), Irish Independent, Belfast Newsletter, Glasgow Evening Times, East London Daily Dispatch, Cape Times, Cape Argus, Bloemfontein Post, Eastern Province Herald, Natal Witness, Johannesburg Star, Paarl Post, Ons Land (PC/fam).

Sir Pieter was commemorated by many events, including the naming of a pier on Robben Island, the Faure Pier, the naming of a small steamer, the Pieter Faure, the opening of the George / Mossel Bay railway line on 25.09.1907, etc. Sir Pieter and Lady Johanna had 7 children.

JACOBUS CHRISTIAAN FAURE (1903-1985)

Jacobus Christiaan, known as "Kosie", inherited the Paarl farm "Ruitersvlei" (and "Vrymansfontein" – perhaps he and not his father bought it). He was a Farmer all his life and retired to his holiday house in Gordon’s Bay. Kosie married Catharina Wilhelmina WALTERS (called “Kay”) (* Holiday house, Beach JCF. Source : JCF. The family describe the farm “Ruitersvlei” as follows: Ruitersvlei is situated in one of the oldest wine farming areas in the Cape. The first record of the farm appeared in 1688. The farm was originally called Ruigtervallei. It measured 57 morgen, and was granted to a Mr Guillame Frisnet.

The FAURE family has owned the farm for the past 150 years. The farm is located in the midst of some of the most recognised wine farms in the Paarl area. Surrounding and neighbouring farms include Seidelberg, Fairview, Laborie, Johnny, Jeanne and daughters Home: Ruitersvlei Rhebokskloof, and Landskroon Wine Estate. Ruitersvlei is situated beneath the Paarl Mountain Reserve, comprising over 2 200 hectares of pristine unspoiled open space on the slopes of the Paarl Mountain. The slopes of the mountain have long been recognised as one of the finest wine growing areas in the world, and home to some of the finest wines and ports produced in South Africa. The beautiful granite outcrop, second largest of its kind in the world, dominates the surrounding environment of Paarl. Today the area under cultivation consists of two farms, Ruitersvlei and the

Philip Lourens FAURE (2009-)

Philip attends … school. He is keen on sport. He also had a healthy appreciation of antiquities at the tender age of 5. His grandmother, Sorita, had passed an old family bible to on to APF (1946-) (see the accompanying photo). APF was pleased to receive it as its original owner was the common ancestor of this and his family, Jacobus Christiaan FAURE (1798-1876). It contains in JCF’s handwriting his marriages (his first wife died at a young age), as well as the births of his children. APF was happy to act as custodian and later pass it down to someone else who is interested.

APF duly went to collect it in October 2014 from Sorita. After a chat about the bible and the family, he thanked Sorita for handing such a precious item down in the family, and duly lifted it off the table. APF, a veteran of lower back surgery (5 of them), immediately realised that he had underestimated the weight of the bible. Not wanting to appear a softie, he duly carried it to the car and set off to suffer for a few days (injections, medication, rest, and so on). He was happy to suffer because it was in the interests of social science.

Three weeks later Sorita phoned APF and, in a voice conveying deep anxiety, apoligised JCF bible. Source: APF. profusely and asked if she may have the bible returned. Young Philip, then aged 5, was extremely upset when the bible was not in its usual place at Ouma’s (grandma’s) house. Sorita duly took note and, according to other family members, built up courage over 3 weeks to telephone APF. They said that Sorita had not slept a wink in this time. APF gracefully acquiesced. He, however, asked if Sorita would mind collecting it. To ensure that this request was not interpreted as annoyance for cutting the custodianship short, he disclosed the lower back-suffering to Sorita, which of course exacerbated her anxiety. On a serious note: APF was happy to hand the bible back to be looked after by a young man who will treasure it; he always knew he would only be a custodian for a while. Sorita duly collected the bible and APF felt bad as the slight, sophisticated lady battled to carry it to her car. Sorita was happy to suffer, in the interests of family peace. (APF.)

SAMSON ALBERTUS MOUSLEY FAURE (1933-)

SAMF, called “Mousley”, was educated at Diocesan College (aka Bishops Independent School) in Cape Town. After school, he

34 farmed at “Zandvliet” with his brother Felix and father from the early 1950s. As we saw earlier, the farm was expropriated by the government in 1969. Mousley and Felix and families then leased the property from government. Felix and family left the farm in c1975 to farm elsewhere (see later), while Mousley and Gen (see below) continued to live on the farm until 1977, when thieving of the crops and cattle finally drove them from the farm. As a relative, I [APF (1946-)] witnessed the dreadful wrench it was for them, and the sadness they felt, which remains with them today in retirement. We all also witnessed the brick-by-brick, tile-by-tile thievery, which led to the demolishment of the fine homestead over many years until almost nothing remains today (2014). Government did nothing to prevent it. The family had a measure of revenge, when they were successful with a land claim, spearheaded by Mousley, which took 19 years to complete. The compensation eased retirement, but not the sense of sadness.

On 04.12.1964, aged 31, Mousley married Genevieve Carmen BUCKLAND (called “Gen”) (* 14.04.1939, Pietermaritzburg, Natal) [daughter of Virgoe Wilberforce BUCKLAND (* 25.05.1903; + 04.04.1972) and Kathleen Patricia DOWNING (* 04.02.1909; + 1996)], in Newlands, Cape Town. Genevieve worked as PA to the MD for many years at SA Nylon Spinners in Cape Town. Later she took on the position of Public Relations Manager of the farm “Vergelegen” in Somerset West (shortly after it was bought by Anglo American Corporation). As a retiree she remains busy, including with the Somerset West Chapter of U3A. After leaving “Zandvliet”, Mousely remained a Farmer, and worked, inter alia, as Orchard Manager at “Lourensford” farm GCB, SAMF. Source: ECMF. GCB, SAMF. Source: ECMF. in Somerset West. He and Genevieve are retired in Somerset West. They did not have children. (All of the above: PC/ECMF/GCB/APF.)

FELIX CHRISTIAAN MOUSLEY FAURE (1934-)

Felix was educated at Diocesan College (Bishops) Independent School in Cape Town. He married Joan Louise REES (* 16.08.1937). Felix was a Farmer for most of his life. He farmed at “Zandvliet” with brother Mousley (and earlier with his father) for many years. He left the farm c1975, for the reasons mentioned under SAMF’s biographical notes. Felix then bought a farm at Hermon, Cape, and farmed there for a numner of years. Felix and Joan later opened a real estate agency, “Faure Properties”, in Rooi Els (a short distance from Gordon’s Bay, ), where they also lived for a number of years. They retired to Bridgewater Manor, Somerset West, in 2013. FCMF. Source: ECMF. Felix and Joan had 3 children. (PC/fam.)

Senator Philippus Albertus Brand FAURE, called “Albie”, was a Farmer, initially on the farms “Bleak House” and “Dynefontein”, and later on the farm “Kahlenberg” (all at Faure, Cape); a Member of Parliament; and served in the General Jan SMUTS Cabinet. He was a member of the DRC. On 18.04.1914, aged 38, Albie married Emerentia Elizabeth MORKEL (* 22.11.1883, “Die Bos” farm, Somerset West; + 11.12.1950, Cape Town, aged 67; [] Somerset West Cemetery) (daughter of Hendrik Johannes Louw MORKEL and Helena Catharina Philippina MYBURGH) in Somerset West, Cape.

EEM, known as “Dolly”, was born and grew up on the historical farm “Die Bos”, Somerset West, previously named “Onverwacht”, which has been owned by the MORKEL family since 1713. The MORKEL family arrived in Cape Town in 1708 from Germany. Dolly’s last address was the home of daughter Anna Wilhelmina Morkel FAURE (x MORGAN), 17 de Beers Road, Strand. She died at the Nursing Home, Cape Town, and is buried at the Somerset West Cemetery. She was a member of the DRC, Somerset West. Biographical notes [by APF (1946-); Sources: Various family documents and PC/fam]:

Date and place of birth and youth: PABF was born at the home of his mother’s parents (BRAND) in Wale Street Cape Town. He grew up on the farm “Vergenoegd” at Faure. Little is known of PABF’s schooling: it is known that he attended SACS (a high school) in Cape Town at one stage (perhaps his entire high school years?). While at SACS he resided with his uncle Sir Pieter Hendrik

44

FAURE (1848-1914) at his home “Highstead” in Cape Town. “Highstead” was given to Sir Pieter by Cecil John RHODES for lifelong use (Sir Pieter was in CJR’s Cabinet and a great friend). It is also known the Albie attended both Stellenbosch University (US) and the (UCT). It is not known what he read. It is also not known what he did immediately after university, but it is likely that he worked on one of the farms. His father owned a number of farms, including “Vergenoegd”, “Bleak House” and “Dynefontein” (even “Kahlenberg” was part of “Vergenoegd” at one stage).

Military career: PABF was involved in the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) for its duration, and served with the British. He was 24 when he joined the War effort. Judging by his photograph in uniform if seems as though he was a Major. I seem to recall father JPMF (1917- 2005) telling me that PABF also acted as an Interpreter during the Boer War. During the last Boer War he was also attached to the CIV (Civil Imperial Volunteers) for nine months and was the only South African who PABF. Source: APF. “Kahlenberg”. Photo of a sketch. Source: APF. received the Lord Mayor’s Medal which was struck in commemoration of the raising and equipping of the CIV. PABF held four other medals: “Queen’s South Africa”, “King’s South Africa”, “Jubilee Medal 1935”, “Coronation Medal 1937” (source MJH).

Farming career: It is reasonable to assume that after the Boer War Albie farmed – because his father died in 1902 and Albie inherited the farms “Bleak House” and “Dynefontein”. He must have farmed the former because the latter farm was poor in terms of soil quality (sandy). PABF sold “Bleak House” in 1920 and bought “Kahlenberg” in Faure in that year and farmed it with sons JPMF and HMF. He was a part-time Farmer from when he became a Member of Parliament in 1929 until his death in 1947.

Parliamentary career: It is likely that Sir Pieter Hendrik FAURE encouraged PABF to enter politics. He stood for the South African Party (which later became the United Party) for the Hottentots Holland Constituency (then much larger than Strand, Somerset West and Gordon’s Bay) in the election of 12.06.1929. He was elected (at age 54) and it is recorded that he was “very popular” and did much for his constituency. He opened / laid the foundation stones of a number of public amenities / utilities, including: “Faure Marine Drive” (from Gordon’s Bay to close to Kogel Bay, from where it is named “Clarence Drive”) (in 2014 an international travel company judged Faure Marine Drive / Clarence Drive to be the most spectacular marine drive in the world); “Faure Street” (Gordon’s Bay, from Beach Road to Faure Marine Drive); “Gordon’s Bay Harbour” (in the early 1930s); “Bridge at Melkbaai” (Strand: the bridge over the Lourens River); “Town Hall” (Somerset West); “Volkskerk van Afrika Weeshuis” (orphanage); “Steenbras River Dam”.

45

PABF was appointed a Senator in 1942 and was thereafter referred to as “The Honourable Senator PAB FAURE” (newspaper clippings). He served on three Government Commissions (see below).

Board / club memberships, etc: PABF served on many boards / was member of: Member of the Stellenbosch Divisional Council (first appointed in 1917) and later its Chairman; Member (and later Chairman) of the Lower Eerste River Board for 25 years; Member (and twice Vice-President and twice President) of the Divisional Councils Association of the Cape (in 1942 elected the Life President of the Association); Member of the Nelspoort Sanatorium; Member1820 Settlers’ Association; Director of the Western Province Tobacco Company (for many years); Served on the Stellenbosch Licensing Court; Member of the Stellenbosch University Council; Member of a School Board (not sure which one); Member of a Hospital Board (not sure which one, but probably MPs of 1940. Source: Newspaper cutting of 10.09.1940. Hottentots Holland Hospital or Stellenbosch Hospital); Member of the Cape Land Board for 11 years; Member of the Orange River Island Commission; Member of the Richtersveld Commission; Member of the Ebenezer Commission; Director of the Colonial Mutual Insurance Company; Director of the South Africa Clothing Company; Director of the Hottentots Holland Board of Executors; Honorary Treasurer of the Athlone Blind School; Member of the Masonic Lodge (from 1903) and the Masonic Education Fund; Member of Civil Service Club, Cape Town.

Sport: PABF took a keen interest in all sports, but particularly rugby and shooting. He was a Member of “Gardens Rugby Club” and played for the first team for many years (5 years according to daughter Helen), and became its Vice-President. He twice represented the Cape Colony in the Inter-Colonial Shooting Shield. He was also a member of the first rowing club in South Africa, the “Alfred Rowing Club”, in Cape Town (which still exists

“Die Bos” farm, Somerset West. Source: Johan MORKEL (who was The 6 MORKEL sisters. Dolly at bottom left. Source: – 2015). still living there in 2015). Essie KOEKEMOER.

46

Church activities: Keenness in or indifference to spiritual matters is not known, but he and “Dolly” were members of the DRC in Stellenbosch or Somerset West. It is likely that both sets of parents were members of the DRC.

Marriage: PABF was married in 1914 to Emerentia Elizabeth MORKEL (1883-1950) (details given above) of “Onverwaght” later called “Die Bos”. She was called “Dolly” and was of the famous rugby MORKEL family. There was talk of a rugby team in the area made up of 15 Morkels. The Somerset West Rugby Club first team of 1913 had 7 MORKEL’s in the side (all related). The 1913-1914 Springbok side had 7 MORKEL’s in the side, and the 1921 side had 5 in the team [WH (“Boy”) MORKEL was the Captain]. Dolly was one of 6 sisters, all endowed with feminine pulchritude. She read Music at the Conservatorium of Music at Stellenbosch University, and was a Music Teacher. She was also an Organist in the Somerset West DRC. (Part of the rugby information: Van der Merwe, GJ, 2013. “Die Morkels van die Bos”. Somerset West: GJ Van der Merwe.)

Property: As noted above, Albie inherited the farms “Bleak House” and “Dynefontein”. “Bleak House” was wedged between “Vergenoegd” and “Zandvliet”. “Dynefontein” was a huge tract of land stretching between the old Faure-Cape Town Road and the sea from Faure to Cape Town. Albie sold “Dynefontein” at some stage for “2 and 6” (1/4 of a British Pound = 12.5 cents in today’s money) per morgen (slightly under a hectare) (told to me by father JPMF). He sold “Bleak House” to a Mr BOSMAN in 1920 and purchased “Kahlenberg” farm from a Mr KOEFNER / KUFFNER in the same year. Mr KOEFNER / KUFFNER was an Austrian citizen and had named the farm after a city (or town) in Austria. He also had other properties, including (he thought) the plot on which PABF’s VERY expensive fountain. Source: APF. the Da Gama Hotel (Beach Road, Strand) was built (now the Da Gama block of flats). The attorney never transferred the plot to him (but kept the money of course). According to father JPMF he also owned a share in the White House Hotel in the Strand, but when the company that owned it went out of business all PABF got out of the deal was the fountain (still to be seen in front of the block of flats “Welgelegen” that replaced the White House Hotel, Beach Road, Strand). PABF also owned an aeroplane, which was used for “flips” by the public. The airstrip used was probably where “Aerodrome Road” is situated in Strand.

The home: In 1995 I asked Aunt Helen [Helena Elizabeth Morkel FAURE (1915-2005)] to write a piece on PABF and Dolly. She kindly obliged: It is a tribute to a kind (and a “legpuller” of note, but impatient) father and a kind and loving mother, who created a “very happy home”. It is presented in Book 8.

Death: PABF was in a sick bed for a few years before he departed for Heaven. While ill he resigned as a Senator (probably in the period 1945-1947). He was visited by many friends and prominent persons, including Prime Minister General Jan SMUTS. Father JPMF informed me of an incident when Prime Minister Jan SMUTS paid a visit PABF at “Kahlenberg” while he was unwell. The

47 backdrop: In Faure there lived a man by name Joe NORBE who looked very much like Prime Minister General Jan SMUTS; he was the owner of the local store. The house at “Kahlenberg” faced west. The incident: It was late afternoon, and there was a knock at the front door. JPMF opened the door and there stood a man silhouetted against the glare of the sun. JPMF thought it was Joe NORBE. Not wanting his dad disturbed by Joe, JPMF said gruffly, “My pa wil nie vir jou sien nie” (my father does not want to see you). Jan SMUTS was taken aback, brushed JPMF aside, and walked into the house. JPMF later had occasion to explain and apologise to the Prime Minister. General SMUTS probably chuckled and accepted the apology.

Other information: JPMF told me that PABF accompanied Cecil John RHODES on horseback to identify the land at Strand, Cape, on which African Explosives and Chemical Industries (AECI) was later built. The explosives factory played a major role in mining (and later in plastic product manufacturing). This is confirmed in “Memories of Helen FAURE” by Helena Elizabeth Morkel (1915-2005), as an entry in a PABF diary of 1929 or 1930. HEMF also told me that PABF went horse buying with CJR. PABF

CJR’s gift to Albie. Source: HEMF. probably met CJR at “Highstead” while at high school in Cape Town. Reminder: Sir Pieter Hendrik FAURE was given the CJR homestead “Highstead” for use in his life and was a good friend of CJR and a member of his government. According to HEMF, CJR at one time presented Albie with a horse as a gift (why is not known).

Sense of humour: Albie, according to family lore, was a legpuller of note. One story stuck (artistic licence taken): Albie and three school friends decided to do some gallivanting in Cape Town. The foursome comprised Albie, Fred, Ivan, and Michael. Albie bought the tickets from their pooled money at the Faure railway station, and they duly departed on an adventure to the big city. They chatted about rugby and girls and peered out the window at the vineyards and stations flashing by every so often. Ten minutes into the journey the conductor entered the carriage at the far end from where the four were seated. Albie fumbled for the tickets and, with fanfare, pulled three out of his pocket, and fanned them out in his hand. He produced a pained expression. ‘My goodness, I've only got three tickets.’ ‘I saw you buy four,’ Fred asserted. ‘What happened to the fourth?’ ‘I must have lost it. Now we’re in trouble. The conductor's almost here.’ Albie looked Fred in the eye. ‘Fred, you're the smallest. Creep in under the seat and we'll be okay.’ Fred protested. ‘Why me? And it's filthy under the seat.’ ‘Because you’re the smallest. Fred, hurry up, the conductor’s almost here. Get under the seat, please.’ With a groan Fred did as instructed, rubbing his clean white shirt into the thin layer of grubby soot. He mumbled anti-social words. The conductor duly arrived. ‘Tickets please.’ Albie fumbled in his pocket, extracted four tickets, and handed them to the conductor. The conductor looked at Albie askew. ‘But, you've given me four tickets. And there are only three of you.’

48

Albie asked the conductor to bend down and pointed to where Fred was lying under the seat. ‘The fourth ticket is for that fellow lying under the seat.’ The conductor was dumbfounded, and Fred was devastated. With the exception of Fred, the friends laughed until their stomachs ached and their eyes brimmed with tears. They thanked Fred for the splendid entertainment.

Children: Albie and Dolly had 5 children. (PC/fam, MOOC/821/47, HMM.)

JAF, called “John”, is a Farmer on “Vergenoegd” farm, Faure. After school, John was educated at Hottentots Holland High School, Somerset West, and Elsenburg Agricultural College (major: Cellar Technology), where he won the award for the Best Student, c1981. On 28.07.1984, aged 22, John married Sharon Danielle ROBINSON (* 26.06.1962) (daughter of John ROBINSON and Constance ?). They were divorced. Many years later, c2012, John married again: Dorothy ?. Dorothy works at Murray & Roberts (Engineering). John continues the family tradition of fine wine-making. According to John (www.vergenoegd.co.za):

“Winemaking has been an integral part of the Estate during its whole existence. The Vergenoegd Cabernet Sauvignon made its name on the National Red Wine Show five times as Champion and four times as Grand Champion wine. This success has continued through the years until today with all the Vergenoegd wine still being awarded good star ratings in both the John Platter Guide and the authoritative Wine Magazine tastings. The charming old world cellar is equipped with modern winemaking machinery and in its cool interior wines lie quietly maturing in new French 300 litre oak barrels. The estates soil profile which varies from alluvial loam to sand with yellow clay and calcareous layers, probably of marine origin, together with other factors such as cooler maritime climate, modern and attentive vineyard management, a minimalist approach to irrigation, selective harvesting and non- invasive vinification result in full-bodied, rich red wines reflecting the unique maritime terroir of Vergenoegd.

“The objective of the estate is to produce full bodied rich and complex elegant wines which are released 3 years after vintage and have a maturation potential of 10 years plus. Due to its close proximity to the coast, the estate has a terroir and climate which is unique in South Africa. The prevailing cool sea breeze and unique calcareous (lime) content of the soils results in low yields and a long ripening period which add structure and concentration to the wines.

“John Faure is the winemaker at Vergenoegd, he is the sixth generation Faure to farm on Vergenoegd. He studied Cellar Technology at Elsenburg Agricultural College and thereafter during 1983 joined the family on the farm and assisted in the vineyards and cellar. Toward the end of the eighties he started exerting more control in the cellar and started subtle changes in the making and maturation of the wine – previously wines had a distinctive Vergenoegd character – from terroir and maturation in large old vats – this maturation process changed with the introduction of new small wood. This change immediately had positive consequences with a collection of Veritas Awards and other achievements and recognitions. These successes led to the confidence to further experiment in the vineyards and cellar to continue to improve the quality of the Vergenoegd wines, while continuing to the use the conditions at Vergenoegd to retain a distinctive Vergenoegd character.

“John believes that wine is made in the Vineyards; although one can’t expect to make good wine from poor grapes, it is much easier to make good wine from good grapes, but the ability to understand the good quality grapes from the vineyard and guide them in the

57 correct direction is what makes the difference between a good wine or an excellent wine. John strives to achieve a unique Vergenoegd character – to produce a wine that had balance and elegance and complexity and fruit to be enjoyed from about 3 years of age but that will continue to improve for the next few years and keep this peak till at least 10 years of age or longer.”

John and Sharon had 2 children. (PC/fam.)

JOHANNES HENDRICUS BRAND FAURE (1938-2007), Dip (Agric)

59

JHBF, called “Brand” was educated at Rondebosch Boys High School and Clanwilliam Agricultural College. He spent his entire working life as a Farmer at "Vergenoegd", Faure, in partnership wth brother Jac. Brand met Theodora Maria PETERS (* 24.06.1941), known as “Thea”, in 1958 when she was 17. In 1961 he asked her dad if they can get engaged. He replied in the negative as she was not yet 21. Brand was determined, drove her up to (which has a beautiful view over the sea and Cape Town) and “... made sure she said yes.” Thea’s dad was not a happy man but acquiesced. On

JHBF. Source: JCF. TMP. Source: JCF. 27.04.1963, when Brand was 25, and Thea 21, they were married in St Paul's Church, Somerset West, Cape.

A précis of the notes written by Thea for the Minister, Gavin Graham, for Brand's Memorial Service held on 15.05.2007: Brand was born in Somerset West on 21.07.1938. His life was spent on the farm, "Vergenoegd" near Somerset West. He was educated at Rondebosch Boys High School and went on to study agriculture at the Clanwilliam Agricultural College. As a young man of twenty years of age he met a young girl who was to become his wife. However, because she was only seventeen and a half years old her father was determined that the two young people would only get engaged once Thea turned 21. This did not deter Brand and in the end he made her his wife. The union produced three children, Elaine, Alexander and Sharon.

From an early age Brand enjoyed people and as he and Thea settled down on the farm his parties were well known and all enjoyed the fruit of the vines that grew so beautifully on the farm. He worked all his life, caring for the vineyards, the tractors and the pumps himself. He enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the staff on the farm and they loved him. He made friends wherever he went and was well known in the area. He travelled extensively. In the early years of marriage the family would pull a caravan to the Kruger National Park and the old South West Africa and he had a special love for Sun City. Later he visited Europe, Britain and Ireland. He had a special love for Scottish music and went to see the Military Tattoo in Edinburgh, which he enjoyed so much.

JHBF in later years. Source: Memorial Service Pamphlet. For the last ten years he and Thea were permanent residents in Pringle Bay. Although he suffered from Parkinson's disease he was determined that it would not get him down. He was a well known figure in the village as he went about his business walking with his stick. His affliction never stopped him from getting stuck into whatever needed to be done in the home and he could be seen up ladders, sanding, painting and even fixing gutters. Brand never complained and bore his illness with dignity and fortitude. He was a committed Christian and a faithful member of the Body of Christ. He loved Thea

60 deeply and they spent 44 years together. He died on 07.06. in Somerset West, the town where he was born. All who knew him will miss him but we know he is with the Lord he loved. They were active members of the United Congregational Church. Brand and Thea retired to Pringle Bay, Cape, in 1997 where Brand died. He had Parkinson’s disease and a heart condition in later life.

The Memorial Service held for Brand took place at the Pringle Bay United Church. Tributes were presented by son Alexander and E DE VOS. Brand and Thea had 3 children. (PC/fam, notes prepared for Minister by Thea).
