It is likely that he inherited the Stellenbosch (town) farm, and farmed it until 1847. JCF married Elisabeth BRINK (1801-1835). As she died young, he then married Elisabeth MYBURGH (1812-1876), of the farm “Meerlust” at Faure. He had 2 children with Elisabeth BRINK and 6 children with Elisabeth MYBURGH. These localities (four within the district of Stellenbosch and one in Durbanville) were within a radius of 15 km and underlain by different geological formations. Two experimental plots, representing different soil forms, were identified at each locality. Relatively good root distribution was obtained for at least one soil from each parent material (granite, hornfels, shale). Management practices, such as liming and fertilisation, changed the chemical properties of the soil.

30 March2017 Dear Parent/Guardian NEWSLETTER 9/17 We have reached the end of a highly successful term. So much has been achieved and we have big dreams and plans for the remainder of the year. Allow me this opportunity to thank every dedicated educator, coach and learner for their hard work and commitment. It is wonderful to see the scale of participation and the level at which we are competing now. Sport and culture have gone from strength to strength. Add to that the excellent academic results we attained last year, and you have to agree that our school is blessed with exceptional learners, educators and parents. During a recent visit by the Curro Transformation and Diversity team, we were complimented on the friendliness of our learners and staff. They noticed how learners went out of their way to greet them and to assist where they could. We also often get compliments from visitors, who work with our learners, regarding their ability to think out of the box and come up with new ideas and solutions. Schools close on Friday, 31 March at 11:00. Reports will be issued to learners on this day. Term 2 starts on Wednesday, 19 April. Educators already start on Tuesday, 18 April. Enjoy a well-deserved break with your children. May God keep you safe and may you experience a blessed Easter. STAFF MATTERS We wish to congratulate Mr Christiaan Botha who attended the North-West University of Potchefstroom’s graduation ceremony to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Education (BEd). Congratulations to Mrs Mariëtte Viljoen whose daughter, Obie, had a baby girl earlier this week.

  • A Brief History of Wine in South Africa Stefan K
European Review - Fall 2014 (in press) A brief history of wine in South Africa Stefan K. Estreicher Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX 79409-1051, USA Vitis vinifera was first planted in South Africa by the Dutchman Jan van Riebeeck in 1655. The first wine farms, in which the French Huguenots participated – were land grants given by another Dutchman, Simon Van der Stel. He also established (for himself) the Constantia estate. The Constantia wine later became one of the most celebrated wines in the world. The decline of the South African wine industry in the late 1800’s was caused by the combination of natural disasters (mildew, phylloxera) and the consequences of wars and political events in Europe. Despite the reorganization imposed by the KWV cooperative, recovery was slow because of the embargo against the Apartheid regime. Since the 1990s, a large number of new wineries – often, small family operations – have been created. South African wines are now available in many markets. Some of these wines can compete with the best in the world. Stefan K. Estreicher received his PhD in Physics from the University of Zürich. He is currently Paul Whitfield Horn Professor in the Physics Department at Texas Tech University. His biography can be found at http://jupiter.phys.ttu.edu/stefanke. One of his hobbies is the history of wine. Dr Fish addressed a large group of Westerfordians about how, contrary to popular belief, science and religion do not have to clash, but instead overlap and can go hand in hand. He shared many quotes with us from famous scientists in the past about faith and science coinciding, as well as comparing scientific fact to what the Bible states. Dr Fish also made time towards the end to answer some of the pressing questions the Westerfordians at the event had, many of which would have been difficult for the average person to answer! A huge thank you to Dr Fish for taking time to share his incredible insight and wisdom on this subject with Westerford.

Fine Wine List GS sm The GuidedLive Safaris your Studio Safari ● San Francisco,Dream California www.luxurysafarilodges.com ● Questions? (415) 814 6676 INTRODUCTION Twenty-one years ago we set out to create a wine collection of unparalleled standards and quality. Each of the 7,500 bottles, housed in our professionally maintained cellars, represents the very best wines from the world- renowned estates and vineyards of the Western Cape. I invite you to explore our three climate-controlled wine cellars and discover for yourself some of the rare and special vintages we currently list. We also have the revolutionary Le Verre de Vin wine preservation system. This allows us to pour premium still and sparkling wines by the glass without compromising on quality, giving you the widest choice of excellent wines. Our attention to detail has been recognized by Diners Club in their Wine List competition, which has given us the highest accolade from 2009 - 2012 consecutively - a Diamond Award. In 2012 we were recognized by Food 24 as having "The Best Long List" in South Africa in their independent wine list competition. Our selection of rare and vintage wines, some as old as 1980, guarantee memorable moments at the table, especially when combined with our exceptional menus. We are always on the lookout for new and exciting wines. We source wines from both established and emerging vineyards as well as from prestigious wine auctions, such as Nederburg and the Cape Wine Makers Guild. To continue with our passion and dedication to South African wines, and in the interest of only listing wines when they are at their optimal drinking, we have dedicated sections of our cellars to the investment and maturation of young vintages.
