WITT & NIKOLAI IGNATEV Abstract Discovery of Aenetus sumatraensis nov.sp. from northern Sumatra expands the distribution range of this genus well into southeastern Asia along the Greater and Lesser Sunda. The species belongs to the A. tegulatus clade distributed between northern Australia, New Gui- nea, islands west of New Guinea and the Lesser Sunda that are separated by over 5,000 km from A. sumatraensis nov.sp.. The Sumatran record either represents local differentiation from a formerly widespread ancestor or it is part a larger distribution of the A. tegulatus clade in the Greater Sunda that has not yet been discovered. The bursa copulatrix of the Australian species referred to as A. tegulatus is different from specimens examined in New Guinea and Ambon Islands (locality for the type) and is therefore referred to here as A. ther- mistes stat.rev. DUMBLETON, Entomology Division, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Christchurch (Received for publication 9 May 1966) Summary Some morphological characters of taxonomic importance in the Hepialidae are briefly reviewed. The male genitalia of all existing New Zealand species are described, and the female genitalia of all except one species. The New Zealand species, with the exception of one species of Aenetus Herrich-Schaeffer (= Charagia Walker) and the species transferred to Wiseana Viette, were previously placed in Oxycanus Walker (= Porina Walker, preoccupied). The subfamily Hepialinae in New Zealand includes the non-endemic genus Aenetus and the endemic genus Aoraid gen. n. which has four species. Oxycaninae subfam. n., with Oxycanus as type genus, is defined on venational characters. It includes the endemic genera Wiseana (5 spp.), Trioxycanus gen. n. (3 spp.), Dioxycanus gen. n. (2 spp.), and Cladoxycanus gen. n. (1 sp.). The New Zealand hepialid fauna has its strongest affinities with that of Australia. The present distributions of the species are largely explicable as modification of late- Tertiary distributions resulting from oscillations of climate in the Pleistocene. INTRODUCTION The identification of the species of Hepialidae in New Zealand, except for the work of Philpott (1927a), has been based largely on the colour pattern of the scales of the fore wing. This is extremely variable and for most species there is no satisfactory evidence as to the range of intra- specific variation in this chaarcter and the possible overlapping of the ranges of variation of closely related species. -

Associate editor: Patricia Beldade Abstract Butterfly wing patterns have long been a favorite system for studying the evolutionary radiation of complex morphologies. One of the key characteristics of the system is that wing patterns are based on a highly conserved ground plan of pattern homologies. In fact, the evolution of lepidopteran wing patterns is proposed to have occurred through the repeated gain, Research article loss, and modification of only a handful of serially repeated elements. In this study, we examine the evolution and development of stripe wing pattern elements. We show that expression of the developmental morphogen wingless (wg)is associated with early determination of the major basal (B), discal (DI and DII), and marginal (EI) stripe patterns in a broad sampling of Lepidoptera, suggesting homology of these pattern elements across moths and butterflies. We describe for the first time a novel Lepidoptera-specific homeobox gene, aristaless2 (al2), which precedes wg expression during the early determination of DII stripe patterns. We show that al2 was derived from a tandem duplication of the aristaless gene, whereupon it underwent a rapid coding and cis-regulatory divergence relative to its more conserved paralog aristaless1 (al1), which retained an ancestral expression pattern. The al2 stripe expression domain evolutionarily preceded the appearance of the DII pattern elements in multiple lineages, leading us to speculate that al2 represented preexisting positional information that may have facilitated DII evolution via a developmental drive mechanism. -
