Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae. -

During the present study, a total of 675 moth specimens were collected from the study area which represented 112 species from 16 families and eight super families. Though much of the species has been reported earlier from other parts of India, 15 species were first records for the state of Kerala. The highest species richness was shown by the family Erebidae and the least by the families Lasiocampidae, Uraniidae, Notodontidae, Pyralidae, Yponomeutidae, Zygaenidae and Hepialidae with one species each. The results of this preliminary study are promising; it sheds light on the unknown biodiversity of Vagamon hills which needs to be strengthened through comprehensive future surveys. Pest Alert: Box Tree Moth (Cydalima Perspectalis)
Pest Alert Box Tree Moth (Cydalima perspectalis) The box tree moth is an invasive pest that primarily feeds on boxwood species (Buxus spp). In its native range, it also feeds on burning bush (Euonymus alatus), Japanese spindletree (E. japonicus), purple holly (Ilex chinensis), and orange jessamine (Murraya paniculate) once boxwood in the vicinity are completely defoliated. Distribution and Spread The box tree moth is native to temperate and subtropical regions in Asia. It was first reported in Europe in 2007, after which it spread rapidly across European countries and into Western Asia and Northern Africa. In 2018, it was documented in Canada. The rate of spread for the box tree moth has varied since its introduction in Europe, with some cases peaking at 96 miles per year. Long distance movement of the box tree moth across Europe occurred primarily through the movement of infested Adult moths (top and bottom left), damage (bottom) boxwood plantings. Box tree moths are highly mobile and used for edging, as hedges, thick brown border spanning 1.6 and are good fliers. Natural spread and/or clipped into different shapes to 1.8 inches. WITT & NIKOLAI IGNATEV Abstract Discovery of Aenetus sumatraensis nov.sp. from northern Sumatra expands the distribution range of this genus well into southeastern Asia along the Greater and Lesser Sunda. The species belongs to the A. tegulatus clade distributed between northern Australia, New Gui- nea, islands west of New Guinea and the Lesser Sunda that are separated by over 5,000 km from A. sumatraensis nov.sp.. The Sumatran record either represents local differentiation from a formerly widespread ancestor or it is part a larger distribution of the A. tegulatus clade in the Greater Sunda that has not yet been discovered. The bursa copulatrix of the Australian species referred to as A. tegulatus is different from specimens examined in New Guinea and Ambon Islands (locality for the type) and is therefore referred to here as A. ther- mistes stat.rev. A., Feb. 12, 1980) This short article deals with the discovery of Epigondolella ab- neptis (Huckriede) , a Lower Norian index conodont of Japan, in the limestone at the southeastern coast of Malajon Island, the Calamian Island Group, and its geological significance. The general geology of the Calamian Island Group had not been surveyed since Smith (1924) reported the manganese-bearing chert formation from Busuanga Island and limestone from Coron Island, until 1978, when H. Fontaine reported the geological and palaeon- tological results of his reconnaissance works conducted in this island group (Fontaine, 1978, 1979; Fontaine et al., 1979). The Calamian Island Group is geographically situated between Mindoro and Palawan Islands, where the Mindoro and the Palawan Metamorphics are exposed respectively. Concerning the origin of these schists in the Recent Palawan Arc trending from Palawan to Mindoro, Gervasio (1971) and Hashimoto and Sato (1973) are of different opinions. Gervasio (1971) referred to the schist in the Palawan Arc as the basement of the Philippines and the non-metamorphosed Palaeozoic sediments including limestone in northern Palawan as well as that in the Calamian Island Group and the Permian limestone on Carabao Island as Palaeozoic formation deposited in a miogeosyncline, occur- ring in an east-west direction upon the basement schist terrain. -

Glossary of Major Terms and Concepts The following terms and concepts form the core of much of this book. Generally, they appear in boldface type in the text. The chapters in which they are more fully discussed are also given. Acceleration: Faster rate of developmenral evenrs (at any level: cell, organ, individual) in the descendanr; produces peramorphie traits when expressed in the adult pheno type. (Chapters 1 and 2) Allometric heterochrony: Change in a trair as a function of size (as opposed to a function of age in " true" heterochrony); it is useful as adescriptor and can be inrerpretive considering that body size is often a beuer metric of " inrrinsic" age than chronologi cal age. The same categories apply as in " true" heterochrony, only the adjective "allometric" is prefixed: e.g. , " allometric progenesis" is when the descendant ter minates growth at a smaller size (as opposed to age) than the ancestor. (Chapter 2) Allometry: The study of size and shape, usually using biometrie data; the change in size and shape observed. Basic kinds of allometric change include the following. Com plex allometry: occurs when the ratio of the specific growth rates of the traits compared are not constant, a log-log plot comparing the traits will not yield a straight line (i.e., " k" in the allometric formula is inconstanr). Isometry: occurs when there is no change in shape with size increase; that is, when the traits being compared on a log-log plot yield a straight line with a slope (k in the allometric formula) that is effectively equal to 1. -
