Kristina Bjureke Ex situ conservation and reinforcement work at the Natural History Museum in Oslo, Norway

Why? Global Strategy for Conservation

Target 8: At least 75 % of threatened plant species in ex situ collections, preferably in the country of origin, and at least 20 % available for recovery and restoration programmes – by 2020

Reestablishment and reinforcement are issues in action plans for threatened plant species in Norway.

Number of plant species • 369 plant species on the Norwegian red list • 369 – 9 species DD = 360 • 360 – 10 species RE = 350 • 350 – 21 Rubus = 329

• 2007: from 13 species in our bank • 2009: seeds from 92 species in seed bank • 2011: 111 species in seed bank + ca. 25 in living collections • 2012: 139 species in seed bank • 2013: 148 species in seed bank + ca. 88 in living collections • 2015: 157 species in seed bank + ca. 95 in living collections Numbers

• We have ca 49% of the amount of plant species on the Norwegian Red list in the Norwegian National Seed Bank • The goal is 75% • New Norwegian red list every 5. year • Some species do not set seeds • Our aim is to have seeds from 5 geographically separated populations Seed banking in NHM, Oslo, Norway Collection Rinsing/cleaning Estimate the number of seeds Drying, 15% RH Seed bank All data to IRIS database Checking MSB pages After 1 month: germination test After 10 years: germination test Educational programmes Duplicates to MSB Conservation areas in our Botanic garden, NHM

Seed can only be harvested if we just have one population (Z)

Grows better than in the nature – no competition

Serratula tinctoria Living ex situ collections: Dracocephalum ruyschiana

We needed a special area for ex situ work Propagation of wild threatened species, ex: Drymocallis rupestris

Ex situ conservation: Two ways, in seed bank and in living collections Drymocallis rupestris The first species that was re- introduced in Norway. Documentation in Blyttia.

First time: 1990 Ekeberg, Oslo. This population has now ca. 2000 ind.

Second time: Nesodden, 2014.

Third time: Tåsen, 2015 Drymocallis rupestris acaule

All re-introductions in Norway must be published in Artskart and Blyttia

Cirsium acaule has been re- introduced twice, in the spring and in the autumn. We learn by our mistakes….
