Welcome to the University Of Waterloo SECTION 1 We would like to welcome you to uWaterloo. You are about to take an exciting journey to earn your degree. We have created this guidebook to help you along every step of your journey and help you to feel part of the community. We have arranged the information in this guidebook in chronological order, so that the information you need to know first is at the beginning of the book, what you need to know next follows, and so on. APPLYING FOR DOCUMENTS To prepare for your stay in Canada you should contact the Canadian visa office serving your country of citizenship to find out if you need a study permit and for a list of required documents. We have provided some information below to get you started with the application process and you can find more on the International Student Experience website. Apply as early as possible and make sure to check the processing times before you apply for your study permit. WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED? Every country has a different list of supporting documents. The immigration officer assessing your application may request additional documents to support your application at any time. Most applicants will need to provide: » Passport » Letter of acceptance from uWaterloo » Proof that you have enough money to cover your tuition and living expenses for you and any family members or dependants that are travelling with you. Once your application is approved, the visa officer will issue a Letter of Introduction. Remember to take this and your offer of admission letter from uWaterloo with you to Canada. The Letter of Introduction is not a study permit. You will receive your study permit when you arrive at your first port of entry in Canada. 6 ALREADY HAVE A STUDY PERMIT? If you are currently studying at another university in Canada and you already have a study permit, you can use the same study permit at uWaterloo as long it has not expired. If you are studying at a Canadian high school you will need to apply for a new study permit for your post-secondary studies. The CIC website has instructions on how to complete the application both online or via mail. TEMPORARY RESIDENT VISA (TRV) Your study permit alone does not give you permission to enter Canada. Citizens of certain countries require an additional document called a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to be TRV granted entry to Canada for a specified period of time. Multiple entry TRVs allow you to request permission to enter Canada as many times as you wish until the visa expires. After you use a single entry TRV, you will need to apply for a new one if you wish to re-enter Canada. 7 DOCUMENTATION FOR YOUR FAMILY If your family is coming to live with you in Canada, they need to apply for visitor status and, if applicable they may also need to apply for a TRV.
