  • Rewiring the Text
Rewiring the Text: Adaptation and Translation in the Digital Heterogossia. Richard Berger. A thesis in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Bournemouth University for the degree of Philosophy Doctorate. March 2005. Bournemouth University. Rewiring the Text: Abstract. This dissertation is concerned with adaptation, in the context of new emerging digital media platforms. The project proposes that new media has allowed for the creation of a universal digital heteroglossia; a heteroglossia that contains the plurality of the unstable utterances of cinema, radio, television, the web and computer games. This has allowed for the process of adaptation to become more instantaneous in the simultaneous deployment of narratives across the digital heteroglossia. Therefore, the process of adaptation is far more dialogical, with previous variants of narratives being ‘rewired’ and gaining an ‘afterlife’ through adaptation, and through the creation of new variants and versions. The Internet has allowed for adaptation to move into a participatory mode, where fanfic writers fill in ‘gaps’ left by the creators of televisual and filmic texts. Videogames, based on pre-existing or co-existing texts, mean that players can experience moments of supreme and non-permanent adaptation themselves. This thesis suggests that this participation has democratised adaptation, and has fundamentally altered the nature of ‘traditional’ adaptation. The thesis concludes that, due to a digital heteroglossia, ‘traditional’ adaptation will decline, as the process becomes more plural and instantaneous. With previous variants of narratives being summoned back into life - due to adaptation, remaking and refashioning - it is increasingly unlikely that ‘fidelity’ strategies of adaptation will continue to be the dominant discourse, as all variants of narratives begin to exist in a dialogical plurality with one another; a mutual exchange of fluctuating source and target texts, cross-referenced through intertextuality and assembling a collage of influences.

Christopher Reeve '74 in Life Is a Dream at Cornell, Princeton when he was 9. His formal preparation began at age 15, however, when he apprenticed him- self to the Williamstown Playhouse in Massachusetts, one of the country's top summer stock theaters. During the next two years, with the help of an under- standing headmaster, Reeve alternated between studies at Princeton Day School, a private high school, and appearances in local community theater. He also found time to be goalie for the school hockey team, work with the school orchestra, and sing in a madrigal group, but says he felt most at home with the theater: 'That's what I did best." His mother, Mrs. Barbara Johnson, explains that when it came time to choose a college, Reeve was looking for a school where he could get a good liberal arts background, yet which had a good theater department and was close enough to New York City that he could come in for auditions and work on vaca- tions. Reeve said he decided to postpone any intensive training as an actor until graduate school. The choice came down to Brown and Cornell. Reeve had friends in Providence but his grandfather, Horace Lamb '16, LLB '20, had gone to Cornell, where he was one of the first students accepted under the Telluride program. Reeve chose Cornell and Rave Reeve-views moved into University Hall 2 in the late By Edward L. • The New Blockbuster Film Sequel: Changing Cultural and Economic Conditions Within the Film Industry
The New Blockbuster Film Sequel: Changing Cultural and Economic Conditions within the Film Industry Jessica Bay Interdisciplinary MA in Popular Culture Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Popular Culture Faculty of Social Sciences, Brock University St. Catharines, Ontario © October 2010 ABSTRACT Film sequels are a pervasive part of film consumption practices and have become an important part of the decision making process for Hollywood studios and producers. This thesis indicates that sequels are not homogenous groups of films, as they are often considered, but offer a variety of story construction and utilize a variety of production methods. Three types of blockbuster sequel sets are identified and discussed in this thesis. The Traditional Blockbuster Sequel Set, as exemplified by Back to the Future (1985, 1989, 1990) films, is the most conventional type of sequel set and capitalizes on the winning formula of the first film in the franchise. The Multi Media Sequel Set, such as The Matrix (1999,2003) trilogy, allows the user/viewer to experience and consume the story as well as the world of the film through many different media. The Lord a/the Rings (2001, 2002, 2003) set of films is an illustration of The Saga Sequel Set where plot lines are continuous over the entire franchise thus allowing the viewer to see the entire set as a unified work. The thesis also demonstrates how the blockbuster sequel sets, such as the Pirates a/the Caribbean (2003, 2006, 2007) franchise, restructure the production process of the Hollywood film industry.

  • The Executive Summary
1 The Executive Summary “Begin at the beginning,” the King said, gravely, “and go till you come to the end; then stop.” LEWIS CARROLL Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland READ THIS CHAPTER LAST! This admonition is like saying, “Don’t open this package until Christmas!” You are, right this minute, ignoring me and reading this chapter anyway. Fine, but when it comes to writing your busi- ness plan, write the Executive Summary last. Typically, investors will read the Executive Summary first; nevertheless, it is the section you want to write last. It is the hook that pulls readers into your net, and it must represent your future plans precisely. The Executive Summary is the place where you tell readers what you’re about to tell them. Am I confusing you? Remember that old advice about writing term papers: “Tell them what you’re going to tell them; tell them; tell them what you told them”? You do the same thing in the Executive Summary. It is a condensed ver- sion of the rest of your proposal. This is not a term paper; this is your life. The beginning of your business plan is the section about your film (or films, if you are starting a multifilm company). You give a brief overview of the people, the products, and your goals. In the rest of the sections—Company, Film(s), Industry, Markets, Distribution, Risk, and Financing—you provide more detail about how the company is going to function. The last section you write is the Executive Summary, which is just that: a summary.
