The Plan of the Work The publication was especially created to appeal to young readers in a format they can enjoy reading and readily understand. Each issue con- tains approximately 15 sketches arranged alphabetically. Each entry pro- vides at least one picture of the individual profiled, and bold-faced rubrics lead the reader to information on birth, youth, early memories, education, first jobs, marriage and family, career highlights, memorable experiences, hobbies, and honors and awards. Each of the entries ends with a list of easily accessible sources designed to lead the student to fur- ther reading on the individual and a current address. Obituary entries are also included, written to provide a perspective on the individual's entire career. Obituaries are clearly marked in both the table of contents and at the beginning of the entry. Biographies are prepared by Omnigraphics editors after extensive re- search, utilizing the most current materials available. Those sources that are generally available to students appear in the list of further reading at the end of the sketch. Indexes To provide easy access to entries, each issue of Biography Today contains a Name Index, General Index covering occupations, organizations, and ethnic and minority origins, Places of Birth Index, and a Birthday Index. These indexes cumulate with each succeeding issue. The three yearly issues are cumulated annually in a hardbound volume, with cumulative indexes. Our Advisors This magazine was reviewed by an Advisory Board comprised of librari- ans, children's literature specialists, and reading instructors so that we could make sure that the concept of this publication to provide a read- able and accessible biographical magazine for young readers was on target. They evaluated the title as it developed, and their suggestions have proved invaluable. Any errors, however, are ours alone. For 1997, two additional special volumes will appear: Environmental Leaders and World Leaders. Each of these hardcover volumes will be 200 pages in length and cover 15 individuals of interest to readers aged 9 and above. The length and format

    Cultural Anthropology through the Lens of Wikipedia: Historical Leader Networks, Gender Bias, and News-based Sentiment Peter A. Gloor, Joao Marcos, Patrick M. de Boer, Hauke Fuehres, Wei Lo, Keiichi Nemoto [email protected] MIT Center for Collective Intelligence Abstract In this paper we study the differences in historical World View between Western and Eastern cultures, represented through the English, the Chinese, Japanese, and German Wikipedia. In particular, we analyze the historical networks of the World’s leaders since the beginning of written history, comparing them in the different Wikipedias and assessing cultural chauvinism. We also identify the most influential female leaders of all times in the English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese Wikipedia. As an additional lens into the soul of a culture we compare top terms, sentiment, emotionality, and complexity of the English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German Wikinews. 1 Introduction Over the last ten years the Web has become a mirror of the real world (Gloor et al. 2009). More recently, the Web has also begun to influence the real world: Societal events such as the Arab spring and the Chilean student unrest have drawn a large part of their impetus from the Internet and online social networks. In the meantime, Wikipedia has become one of the top ten Web sites1, occasionally beating daily newspapers in the actuality of most recent news. Be it the resignation of German national soccer team captain Philipp Lahm, or the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight 17 in the Ukraine by a guided missile, the corresponding Wikipedia page is updated as soon as the actual event happened (Becker 2012.

While Tappin' Thru Life does have some flaws, it's hard to find anyone who isn't won over by Hines showmanship, humor, timing and above all else, talent.” In The Washington Post, Nelson Pressley wrote, “’Tappin’ is basically a breezy, personable concert.     CAST BIOS BETTY WHITE (Annie Eason) – Betty White was born in Oak Park, Illinois and grew up in Los Angeles. After graduating from Beverly Hills High School, she got her big break when she joined a local live TV program. Two years later, White inherited the show. Forming her own production company, White and her partners produced a number of projects for television while she became a popular figure on talk, variety and game shows. She is the winner of two daytime Emmy® Awards. In primetime, she won two Emmy® Awards for her portrayal of Sue Ann Nivens, the Happy Homemaker, on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” She earned two more Emmys® for her roles in “The Golden Girls” and “The John Larroquette Show.” White narrated the New Year’s Day Tournament of Roses Parade on network television for 20 years and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for 10. She has appeared in a number of feature films including “Dennis the Menace Strikes Again” and “Bringing Down the House.” Her motion picture-for-television credits include “Chance of a Lifetime” and “Stealing Christmas.” White’s most recent guest-starring roles have been on “Everwood,” “Malcolm in the Middle,” “My Wife and Kids” and “The Practice,” for which she was nominated for yet another Emmy®.     The Flintstones (1960-1966), About a “Modern Stone-Age Family,” Was The

    Columbia Pictures) to develop a prime-time animated series. They worked out the concept of parodying current situation comedies, especially The Honeymooners and Father Knows Best, with the twist of setting them in a different historical era. Cartoonists Dan Gordon and Bill Benedict had the idea to use a Stone Age setting (although the Fleischer Studios pro- duced a similar series of Stone Age Cartoons back in 1940). The concept was bought by ABC, and premiered Sept. 30, 1960. Voiced by Alan Reed, Jr. (Fred Flintstone), Mel Blanc (Barney Rubble), Jean VanderPyl (Wilma Flintstone) and veteran actress Bea Benaderet (Betty Rubble), The Flintstones finished the season in the Nielsen ratings’ top 20, and won a number of industry awards, including the Golden Globe, and an [email protected] Emmy nomination for best comedy series of 1960-61. A clear appeal of the series lays in its parody of sitcom for- mula plots, and there are elements of satire in the way modern consumer conveniences are turned into sight gags. One of the show’s favorite gags was to have cameos by Stone Age versions of modern celebrities (Ann Margrock, Stony Curtis, etc.). The most popular gimmick was Wilma’s pregnancy, ending with the February 1963 “birth” of their little girl, Pebbles. The next season the Rubbles adopted Bamm-Bamm, a little boy of incredible strength and a one- word vocabulary. By the fifth and sixth seasons, the show began to use more storylines aimed at kids, with new neighbors the Grue- somes (a spin on The Munsters and The Addams Family), and magical space alien The Great Gazoo (Harvey Korman).

Reading packet: available on Blackboard. COURSE DESCRIPTION Development of the mass media; social, economic, and political factors that have contributed to changes in the press. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. Prerequisite: Upper-division standing and a major in journalism, or consent of instructor. OBJECTIVES J 366E will trace the development of American media with an emphasis on cultural, technological and economic backgrounds of press development. To put it more simply, this course will examine the historic relationship between American society and the media. An underlying assumption of this class is that the content and values of the media have been greatly influenced by changes in society over the last 300 years. Conversely, the media have helped shape our society. More specifically, this course will: 1. Examine how journalistic values such as objectivity have evolved. 2. Explain how the media influenced society and how society influenced the media during different periods of our nation's history. 3. Examine who controlled the media at different periods of time, how that control was exercised and how that control influenced media content. 4. Investigate the relationship between the public and the media during different periods of time.
