Back to Maksim Komaro, because witHout His four-ball trick listed above, I would have never thought of the idea of a freeze in a toss-juggling pattern. Emmanuel Perez deserves credit for also putting many freeze-type moves in His ball bouncing routines—check his YouTube channel: C2laballe. You can see several Japanese jugglers using these techniques in their videos and more recently, GautHier TritscHler Has added to tHe game witH some excellent work in his videos: https://goo.gl/IvNI5a. RECCOMMENDATIONS THis tecHnique is still relatively new, so my suggestion to you is to EXPERIMENT. Look for patterns tHat migHt give you tHat extra beat or two to grab a ball and tHen let it go again. Look for patterns with 0’s, 4’s, and 2’s. I have found a few samples so far, but I tHink tHere is a lot more gold out tHere just waiting to be discovered. FINAL COMMENTS Remember, you want to catch the ball at its peak, hold for half a beat or a beat, and let it drop straight down. Lastly, tHink about making tHe tHrowing Hand move smootHly and directly into tHe freeze catch. Siteswap Ben’s Benjamin Beever ([email protected]) AD2000 Writings on juggling, for: 1) Jugglers 2) Mathematicians 3) Other curious people ABOUT THE BOOK The scientific understanding of ‘air-juggling’ has improved dramatically over the last 2 decades. This book aims to bring the reader right up to the forefront of current knowledge (or pretty close anyway). There are 3 kinds of people who might be reading this (see cover). As far as possible, I wanted to cater for everyone in the same book. Maybe this would help jugglers to appreciate maths, mathematicians to get into juggling, or even non-juggling, non-mathematicians to develop a favourable perception of the juggling game. In order to fulfil this ambition, I have indicated which parts of the text are aimed at a specific kind of reader. Different fonts have been used to indicate the main intended audience. Everyone (with many exceptions) should be able to understand most of the writings for the curious. However, non-jugglers may not be able to envisage the patterns discussed in the jugglers text, and non-mathematicians may find some of the concepts in the technical sections hard to get their grey matter around. I must point out however, that juggling is a fairly complicated business. It can be very hard to understand what’s going on in a juggling pattern when it’s being juggled in front of you, and it’s not always easy to understand on paper. This book introduces ‘Generalised siteswap’ (GS) notation, and shows how most air-juggling patterns can be formalised within the GS framework.

1 “INSPECTOR GADGET” - pilot - FADE IN: EXT. GADGET’S HOUSE – DAY A peaceful sunny day. Birds twitter. EXT. GADGET’S BACK YARD – DAY BRAIN digs in the yard. A SPATULA turns burgers on a backyard grill. PAN UP to show it’s GADGET’s spatula hand. He wears a chef’s hat made of raincoat material. GADGET Ah, Penny! This is the kind of day that makes you glad that the part of you that’s not a bunch of gears, motors and pulleys is alive! ANGLE: Penny sits behind a table in the garden, blindfolded, with half a dozen METAL PARTS on the table in front of her. UNDERCRANK: like a soldier field-stripping a rifle, Penny assembles the pieces before her into a HEDGE TRIMMER. She “cocks” the trimmer like a rifle, removes the blindfold and clicks a STOPWATCH. PENNY (shaking her head) Seven seconds. GADGET Penny, is that really necessary? PENNY Uncle, if you were ever locked in a small pitch-black shed with only a disassembled hedge-trimmer and heavily-armed bad guys returning in six-point-two seconds, you wouldn’t ask that. 2 GADGET But Penny, what are the chances of that ever happening?
