IBC ingstar, Dion Cobb. 1981·84 Panth•r Outlook ] Coach Don Briggs is almost surprised at himself as he looks forward to the 1983-84 wrestling season at the Univer sity of Northern Iowa. He finds he's as eager for the season to begin as he was last year - possibly more so, he-says. Last year it was a new challenge for Briggs when he took over as head coach after serving as assistant for the final seven years of an 18-year regime in which teams coached by Chuck Patten won 218 dual meets and two NCAA Division II titles. Briggs' first season as head coach was a successful one, a 17-3 dual meet record. But the Panthers still have the chal lenge before them to get out of the rut. They have finished 10th in the NCAA Division I Tournament two years in a row, and they feel it is time to move up. Briggs' first season as head coach resulted in the crowning of two of his wrestlers with All-American honors. Heavyweight John Kriebs of Dubuque, who placed fifth in the NCAA, returns as a wheel horse of this year's squad. The Panthers, however, suffered some substantial losses by graduation, starting with 126-pound, third-place finisher Randy Majors. Gene Luttrell, 150 pounds, and Efonda Sproles, 167, also completed their eligibility while Mark John each from last year's national tournament. Luttrell lost to Rick son, 190, did not report for the squad this year. It's a formida Monday of Oklahoma State, while Sproles was conquered in ble group. Luttrell and Sproles are both former Division II All a close match by Duane Goldman of Iowa. Johnson was Americans. It took a 1983 NCAA runner-up-to-be to eliminate eliminated from the NCAA Tournament last March by none other than the national champion-to-be, Ed Banach of Iowa. Capable people are on hand to step in for each of the departed stars. In fact, some battles for jobs on the squad are among the anticipations that lift Briggs' enthusiasm to its current heights. Beyond that is the promise of one of the Panthers' all-time best schedules with such teams of NCAA runner-up Oklahoma State and third-place finisher Iowa State compet ing on the mat in Cedar Falls, along with Eastern power Lehigh; Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan State of the Big Ten; Missouri and Nebrasl<a of the Big Eight and Drake University, among others.

  • The Passion of the Superfly
8/27/2015 Koh M/C Journal, Vol. 12, No. 2 (2009) - 'enthuse' "Gently Caress Me, I Love Chris Jericho": Pro Wrestling Fans "Marking Out" http://journal.media-culture.org.au/index.php/mcjournal/article/view/143 Wilson Koh “A bunch of faggots for watching men hug each other in tights.” For the past five Marches, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has produced an awards show which honours its aged former performers, such as Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka and Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, as prowrestling Legends. This awards show, according to WWE, is ‘an elegant, emotional, starstudded event that recognizes the in ring achievements of the inductees and offers historical insights into this centuryold sportsentertainment attraction’ (WWE.com, n.p.). In an episodic storyline leading up to the 2009 awards, however, the reallife personal shortcomings of these Legends have been brought to light, and subsequently mocked in oneonone interview segments with WWE’s Superstar of the Year 2008, the dastardly Chris Jericho. Jericho caps off these tirades by physically assaulting the Legends with handy stage props. Significantly, the performances of Jericho and his victims have garnered positive attention not only from mass audiences unaware of backstage happenings in WWE, but also from the informed community of prowrestling fans over at the nihilistic humour website SomethingAwful. During Jericho’s assault on the Legend Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka at the March 02 WWE Raw event, a WWEthemed forum thread on SomethingAwful logged over sixty posts all reiterating variations of ‘gently caress me Jericho is amazing’ (Jerusalem, n.p.).
