1999-00 NCAA Men's Wrestling Championships Records Wrest_M (99-00) 11/28/00 11:48 AM Page 339 DIVISION I 33 9 Wres t l i n g DIVISION I 2000 Championships Hi g h l i g h t s Iowa’s Streak Continues: Iowa’s streak of consecutive titles continued, as the Hawkeye came from behind on the final day to win a sixth-straight championship March 16-18 in St. Louis. Iowa St. had a commanding lead heading to the final round, looking to 1 Iowa’s Eric Juergens (in black) defeated Iowa State’s Cody Sanderson end Iowa’s string of titles. The 16,795 fans that saw the cham- pionship bouts brought the six-session total attendance to 96,944. The pre- vious record was 90,064 at Northern Iowa in 1997. Most Outstanding Wrestler: Iowa State’s Cael Sanderson, who was not challenged throughout the tournament, won his second straight most- outstanding-wrestler award. And it ended in dramatic fashion. In the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships’ final match after three days of grueling competition inside a legendary arena, Ohio State’s Kyle Snyder used an ankle-pick with eight seconds left to force overtime with North Carolina State’s Nick Gwiazdowski, then score another takedown 15 seconds into the first extra session to end the Wolfpack senior’s 88-match winning streak. Gwiazdowski’s bid for a third title was thwarted, but another senior, Oklahoma State’s Alex Dieringer, finished his career with 82 straight victories and a third national title. Illinois’ Isaiah Martinez won his second championship at 157 pounds. Gabe Dean, a junior for Cornell, picked up his second gold. Missouri’s multi-talented J’den Cox claimed his second in three years. Penn State’s Nico Megaludis and Cornell’s Nahshon Garrett, after long and successful careers, finished in style with their first titles. Oklahoma State’s Dean Heil and Penn State’s Zain Retherford, both sophomores, claimed championship number one, as did Snyder. And underdog Myles Martin, an Ohio State freshman from nearby Penns Grove, New Jersey, had the highlight of the night in beating Penn State’s Bo Nickal.
