3 Panther Wrestling Coaching Staff

Head Coach Don Briggs

Northern Iowa Head Coach Don Briggs enters his third season at the helm of the Panthers this winter, serving as only the sixth head coach in UN l's wrestling history. Briggs has recorded a 29-9 mark in his first two campaigns, including a school record 17 victories in his first season. The UNI mentor served as an assistant to former UNI Head Coach Chuck Patten for seven seasons before taking the top reins. Briggs in his first two seasons as head coach has brought home 10th and 11th place finishes in the NCAA Division I Championships. Last season under Briggs' tutelage, the Panthers produced three Division I All-Americans for the second time since 1953. This season, Briggs and his staff enjoyed one of the best recruiting efforts in UNI history, bringing in eight high school wrestlers from four states, including seven state champions and six All-Americans. Amateur Wrestling News ranked UNl's recruiting season as the seventh best in the nation this year. Briggs, a native of Cedar Rapids, IA and graduate of Jefferson High School, received a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Iowa in 1971 . He enjoyed a successful wrestling career with the Hawkeyes, placing fourth in the Big Ten at 134 pounds as a sophomore and third place his junior and senior years. He was voted team captain as a senior. Before coming to UNI, he held the assistant wrestling post at Cedar Rapids Prairie High School for one year. Briggs was named UN l's assistant wrestling coach after serving as a graduate assistant in 197 4- 75. He completed his graduate work at UNI with a master's degree in physical education in 1975. An avid hunter and fisherman, Briggs also lists skydiving as a favorite pastime. Along with his wife Diana, he has logged over 900 jumps.

He also served a term as president of the Iowa High School Wrestling Coaches Association.

Coach Briggs : "At 118, I'd have to give the nod to Paul Kreimeyer, who wrestled at 126 for us last year, finishing second at the Regionals and qualifying for Nationals. He's a senior with more experience than anyone else at this weight, but that doesn't mean we can count out Perry Summitt, a freshman redshirt. Perry gained a lot of experience last summer, attending all the camps that were available to him. I think it will be a good battle between Paul and Perry. Also at this weight will be freshman Jeff Marcks, who could see a lot of varsity action for us in future years."

At 118 this winter, Kreimeyer will be replacing UNI All-American Bob Hallman, a runnerup at Nationals last season. Kreimeyer enjoyed an outstanding career at Wilton Community High School, winning state titles his junior and senior seasons and recording a perfect 32-0 mark his senior year. He placed sixth in the U.S. Wrestling Federation Junior Championships. At Wilton, he also lettered in football, baseball, and track. He'll be challenged by freshman redshirt Mike Schwab or the loser at 118 between Summitt and Kreimeyer. Pickford is one of our most talented people and has a lot of quickness and good technique. 28 The Panther Wrestling Tradition

One day in the winter of 1923, students from Iowa State Teachers College walked on to the mat for their first intercollegiate wrestling meet. The ISTC squad faced Cornell College from Grinnell, and won 16-8. This opening victory proved an omen of the success that would Panther Olympians follow. It was from that first victory that the first step was taken in a climb that would lead the program to the pinnacle of the wrestling world. The University of Northern Iowa, located in Cedar Falls, was founded in 1876 as the Iowa State Normal School. From a single building on a 40-acre campus, the University has grown to include more than 40 major buildings, a 723-acre campus, 675 faculty members and 11 ,200 students. Northern Iowa emphasizes outstanding undergraduate educa tion, with complementary graduate programs at the master's, spe cialist's and doctoral levels. Building on its traditional strength in teacher education, Northern Iowa has developed other excellent programs in its School of Business, College of Humanities and Fine Arts, College of Natural Sciences and College of Social and Behav- . ioral Sciences. Campus landmarks include the Campanile, the Education Cen ter, Strayer-Wood Theatre, Maucker University Union and the UNI Dome. Special academic resources include the 500,000-volume University Library, the Industrial Technology Center and the Com munications Arts Center. The .campus, classrooms and residence halls are highly handicapped-accessible. Northern Iowa is the home of The North American Review, a quarterly journal of literature that has received two National Maga zine Awards in the fiction category. The University also operates KUNI-FM and KHKE-FM, whose 4,000-member " Friends" organi zation makes them two of the most popular public radio stations in the United States. Northern Iowa competes in men's and women's athletics at the NCAA Division I level. .ln addition to a traditionally strong wrestling program, the University is competitive in football (Mid-Continent Conference, Division IAA) and men's basketball (Association of Mid Continent Universities). In women's athletics the softball team has been especially successful, winning the AIAW Division II College World Series twice in recent years. Northern Iowa is a state-assisted university, part of the Iowa Regents system that also includes the University of Iowa and Iowa State University. The University's more than 40,000 alumni in the United States and other countries lend additional support through the UNI Foundation and other alumni programs.
