TERRACED LANDSCAPES CHOOSING THE FUTURE 1 III World Meeting on Terraced Landscapes THE ROUTE OF TERRACES IN VALTELLINA: COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND TURISM FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF CULTURAL LANDSCAPE Dario Foppoli* Fulvio di Capita** Fondazione di Sviluppo Locale Amministrazione Provinciale di Sondrio Via Piazzi, 23 Corso XXV Aprile, 22 23100 Sondrio - ITALY 23100 Sondrio- ITALY [email protected] [email protected] * Local Development Foundation - Sondrio - ** Provincia di Sondrio, servizio ITALY Produzioni vegetali, assistenza tecnica, infrastrutture e foreste - Sondrio - ITALY Abstract Following the experience acquired in the Distretto Culturale della Valtellina (Valtellina Cultural District) project, the territory was stimulated to further strengthen the relationship between culture, heritage/cultural landscape and the economy. The process emphasized the need to implement positive synergies across these fields and to experiment models of collaboration, which due to the distinctive features of the Valtellina valley hinge on an appropriate development of cultural tourism. The cultural landscape of the Valtellina terraced area was identified as the first asset from which to begin to develop a quality tourism policy. The idea is to create a walking and cycling route called ‘Via dei Terrazzamenti’ (The Route of Terraces), linking existing routes and paths (thus minimizing environmental impact) and allowing tourists to visit the terraced landscape. This has resulted in the local community acquiring a greater awareness of its territory and offering tourists an interesting cognitive experience. Key words: cultural landscape, quality tourism, community involvement, pedestrian route, cycle route 1 Introduction In Valtellina, as in all other alpine areas, the landscape is characterized by centuries-old signs traced by the man and by the close relationship that has necessarily developed between the territory and human activities: there are signs of this both in high-mountain and valley-bottom areas.

RECENZII ŞI NOTE DE LECTURĂ Quaderni Valtellinesi, Sondrio, 1st Trimester 2013, no. 115, 61 p. Quaderni Valtellinesi (The Valtellina Papers) is an Italian quarterly covering a wide range of topics: history, architecture, urbanism, art, religion, politics, travel accounts and reviews, relating to – as the title indicates – the Valtellina Valley. Issued on a regular basis since 1981, the publication (http://www.quadernivaltellinesi.it/) aims to promote the Alpine identity, considered a defining element for the local social community. Under the slogan ‘Local Culture and the World’, it endorses local culture as the key to confronting the world and the new challenges set by modern society. Situated in northern Italy, next to the Swiss border, the Valtellina Valley (Italian Valtellina, Lombard Valtulina, German Veltlin, Romansh Vuclina) is the upper valley of the Adda river, from its sources in the Ortles Mountains to lake Como. Enclosed by the Bernina Alps (north), the Ortles Mountains (northeast) and the Orobie Alps (south), the valley is traversed by several roads crossing Alpine passes. Historically, because of this strategic location, it was often a disputed territory until it finally became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1859. Inhabited by an Italian–speaking Roman Catholic population, the valley is today known for its wines, cheeses, hot springs and skiing. The main towns of the valley are Sondrio, Tirano, Chiavenna, Morbegno and Bormio, all five represented on the editorial board of the Quaderni Valtellinesi. The quarterly is divided into several richly illustrated sections. The opening editorial is followed by a section entitled ‘A Culture for Living’ (Una cultura per vivere), then by ‘From Valtellina and its Surroundings’ (Della Valtellina e contadi), the largest section of the publication; ‘And still, it moves’ (Epur si muove) comes next, before the final reviews section.

  • The Geography of Italian Pasta
The Geography of Italian Pasta David Alexander University of Massachusetts, Amherst Pasta is as much an institution as a food in Italy, where it has made a significant contribution to national culture. Its historical geography is one of strong regional variations based on climate, social factors, and diffusion patterns. These are considered herein; a taxonomy of pasta types is presented and illustrated in a series of maps that show regional variations. The classification scheme divides pasta into eight classes based on morphology and, where appropriate, filling. These include the spaghetti and tubular families, pasta shells, ribbon forms, short pasta, very small or “micro- pasta” types, the ravioli family of filled pasta, and the dumpling family, which includes gnocchi. Three patterns of dif- fusion of pasta types are identified: by sea, usually from the Mezzogiorno and Sicily, locally through adjacent regions, and outwards from the main centers of adoption. Many dry pasta forms are native to the south and center of Italy, while filled pasta of the ravioli family predominates north of the Apennines. Changes in the geography of pasta are re- viewed and analyzed in terms of the modern duality of culture and commercialism. Key Words: pasta, Italy, cultural geography, regional geography. Roger-Viollet rst of 20th-century Europe’s fascist dictators. EARLY LIFE Mussolini was the rst child of the local blacksmith. In later years he expressed pride in his humble origins and often spoke of himself as a “man of the people.” The Mussolini family was, in fact, less humble than he claimed—his father, a part-time socialist journalist as well as a blacksmith, was the son of a lieutenant in the National Guard, and his mother was a schoolteacher—but the Mussolinis were certainly poor. They lived in two crowded rooms on the second oor of a small, decrepit palazzo; and, because Mussolini’s father spent much of his time discussing politics in taverns and most of his money on his mistress, the meals that his three children ate were often meagre. A restless child, Mussolini was disobedient, unruly, and aggressive. He was a bully at school and moody at home. Because the teachers at the village school could not control him, he was sent to board with the strict Salesian order at Faenza, where he proved himself more troublesome than ever, stabbing a fellow pupil with a penknife and attacking one of the Salesians who had attempted to beat him.

Valtellina, located in the Italian Alps of Lombardy, is extensively glaciated. Since 1925, terminal variations of the glaciers have been recorded. By analysing a significant sample of valley glaciers, we have recognized a rapid retreat of the termini which occurred between 1925 and the early 1970s. A period of advance followed, which stopped in the second half of the 1980s. The mean summer temperature fluctuations at the meteorological station of Sondrio at the centre of Valtellina, show that the period 1925-52 was very warm, and then the temperatures d ropped. T he most intense winter precipitation occurred in the period 1925-37. The behaviour of these glaciers is similar to that of other Alpine glaciers, although time of response may be different. OUR REGIONS LOMBARDY FAST FACTS TOTAL AREA: GRAPE VARIETIES: Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca), Moscato Bianco, Rebo, Merlot, Corvina, Croatina, Gropello TOTAL WINE PRODUCTION: 1,183 hl APPELLATIONS: Rosso di Valtellina DOC, Valtellina Superiore DOCG, Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG, Garda DOC, Provincia di Pavia IGT PRODUCERS CENTORRI, MILLE1, TENUTA SCERSCÉ OVERVIEW Lombardy is one of the largest regions in Italy, yet its name is not as well known as some other regions of Italy. Nevertheless, its capital Milan is one of the main gateways to Italy for Americans, and its lake districtparticularly Lake Comois a favorite destination for tourists. Lombardy (Lombardia in Italian) is a prosperous, energetic region that holds many treasures for visitors and for wine lovers. History: Lombardy takes its name from the Lombards, a tribe of people that originated in Sweden long ago and migrated over several centuries southward into Germany and Austria. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Lombards moved into northern Italy and established the Kingdom of the Lombards, which extended from Friuli across to Piedmont and halfway down the Italian Peninsula. The Lombard capital was Pavia in present-day Lombardy. Though the Lombards themselves were conquered by the Franks under Charlemagne, the name stuck, as Charlemagne took King of the Lombards as an additional title. From Charlemagne's time onward for a thousand years, modern-day Lombardy was largely in the orbit of the German-based Holy Roman Empire, but the emperor generally paid little attention to his Italian possessions, and the real power was wielded by local nobility and religious authorities in a constantly shifting mosaic of realms.
