The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Dear Parishioners:

Since the year 1264, the Church has celebrated the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, known today as the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of the Lord. Today (June 6) our parish keeps this great feast with a solemn procession of the Blessed Sacrament. The procession will begin shortly after the 11:00 am Mass. We process for several reasons:

1. To proclaim and profess our unfailing belief in the real and substantial presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Bread and wine are changed into the Lord’s very body and blood by the power of the Holy Spirit and the words of our Savior spoken by the priest. “This is my Body,” says the Lord.

2. To demonstrate our Eucharistic faith to our neighbors. What we usually do within the confines of our church building we take into the streets so that our neighbors might see our devotion and gain insight into that which is our greatest treasure, the gift of our Lord’s body and blood, soul and divinity. The same body and blood that is sacrificed upon Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins is re-presented, albeit in an unbloody manner, every time the Holy Mass is offered in our sanctuary. This is our faith, and we are proud to profess it!

3. To experience a contemplative extension of the Mass, which is the source and summit of our lives as followers of Jesus. How we long to spend more time gazing upon the sacred host when it is elevated at Mass. How we long to experience more deeply the joy of being able to “taste and see the goodness of the Lord” when we receive Holy Communion. When the Blessed Sacrament is exposed in the monstrance for our worship we have the opportunity to do exactly that. Adoration is a contemplative extension of the Holy Mass.

I hope that you put ordinary things aside so that you may assist with the procession this Sunday, June 6. He who gives His life for your redemption will surely be pleased with your public devotion.

God bless,

Fr Mahan THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

2 ST. BARNABAS CATHOLIC CHURCH JUNE 6, 2021 Assistance for Bishop Lucius of the Hakha Diocese, Myanmar We have many parishioners from the Chin state of Myanmar (Burma). Myanmar has been under martial law since February 1 when the military staged a coup against the democratically elected government of Myanmar. The president was deposed and placed under arrest. The internet is under the control of the military and that makes communication difficult between our Chin parishioners and their families back home. Travel has been restricted, making it impossible for an additional priest from Myanmar to come to St Mark to minister to the Burmese community there. The situation is going from bad to worse. Medical supplies are perilously low. The military is targeting civilians and their supply of food and water. A man from Father Eustace’s former parish was killed in the fighting. A child of ten was killed by a bomb. Thousands of civilians have left their villages and are hiding out in the jungle. These are people known by members of our Catholic Chin Community here at St Barnabas. That is why we continue to pray fervently for democracy in Myanmar and for our Chin families.

Father Eustace’s bishop in Myanmar is Bishop Lucius. Bishop Lucius visited us in the summer of 2019. He was unable to visit us in 2020 because of COVID restrictions. He is unable to visit us this year because of martial law. We were very generous with Bishop Lucius when he solicited funds in 2019. Please be aware of this opportunity to send additional funds to him so he can help directly with what is a true humanitarian crisis. I encourage you to give in a significant way, so please be praying about a sacrifice that you and your household might make for the loved ones of our Chin community. You may make a check payable to St Barnabas and designate on the check or on the envelope “Myanmar.” Checks may be placed in the collection basket or mailed to the parish office. Thank you in advance for your generosity and for your care for the families of our Chin parishioners.

Fr. Mahan

Our parish has selected Universal Church Directories to help us with our new parish pictorial directory. Our dates for photography will be June 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 28 and 29. Based upon need, later dates may be possible. We need volunteers to help with the sign up process for our families. To volunteer to be a part of this project please contact: Tom Hosty at [email protected] Carol Elias at [email protected] or 317-919-1206

For now, however, any family can schedule the date and time for their photography session by going to www.ucdir.com. The church code to sign up is IN1713 and the following online family password will be needed: photos. Follow the prompts to schedule your family’s appointment time. Universal is committed to the health and safety of our parish families and will take the necessary precautions to reduce the spread of the coronavirus including following social distancing rules, using plexiglass between families and photographers at the viewing station, and disinfecting all equipment between sittings.

Our parish directory will not be complete without you. PLEASE JOIN US AND SIGN UP TODAY!

An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Prayer to St. Joseph

Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man.

Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen.

Breaking Bread Buyback • Are you tired of bringing your missal back and forth to church? • Are you comfortable using a hymnal in the pew that others have used? • Do you wish for visitors to our parish to have missals available to them?

If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, then we encourage you to help us in our Breaking Bread Buyback program. Since the missals were free to you to begin with, we won’t actually buy them from you, but we will gladly accept them! To donate your missal back to the parish for communal use, simply leave your missal in the pew after any weekend Mass. We will collect them, put protective covers on them, and then place them in the pews for anyone to use. Of course, those of you who wish to continue to have your individual missals are welcome to do so. Thank you!

ST. BARNABAS CATHOLIC CHURCH 5 THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST A priest representing Unbound will visit us and make a presentation at all our Masses June 19-20, 2021.

ST. BARNABAS CATHOLIC CHURCH 7 THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST Gospel Meditation Encourage Deeper Understanding Of Scripture

As our world faces so much turmoil and change, it is now more important than ever to remember who God is, who we are and where we are going. It is easy to get distracted and lose focus, especially when we are being pulled in so many directions. We can not only lose sight of God but one another. Maintaining our well developed and mature relationships with God and one another is essential to continuing to live, healthy, happy, and focused lives. In a message to young people, Pope Benedict XVI said, “the happiness you are seeking, the happiness you have a right to enjoy has a name and a face: it is Jesus of Nazareth, hidden in the Eucharist.” What is true for those who are younger is even truer for those who are older. Regardless of how the particulars of life change over time, human beings are still hard-wired to seek the fullness of life and happiness. How we embark on this journey and what we choose along the way will indicate whether we meet success. There is so much brokenness and pain in our world. Many people are lost, feeling lonely, anxious, marginalized, victimized, isolated, oppressed, and abused. Every time we receive the Body of Christ, we have an opportunity to become what we eat. The power and presence of Christ in the Eucharist becomes present in us and effects change in ourselves and in the lives of those we meet. We are given the grace to become temples of justice and peace, carrying God’s sacred Presence within us wherever we go. Our faith community is ignited with the fire of God’s love and stands out as a beacon of hope in a world that is lost. This is the only way we can discover peace-filled resolutions to violence and create innovative solutions to what is fueling its need in the first place. True happiness, for the young and old alike, becomes an obtainable goal. St. John Maria Vianney says it so well. “There is nothing so great as the Eucharist. If God had something more precious, he would have given it to us.” Only the Eucharist has the ability to connect, sustain, strengthen, and properly orient us, not only on the road of this life but the road to life eternal. Knowing this, when life gets challenging, unsettling, and difficult, we can rely on and cling to this gift we have in the Real Presence of Christ. This actual encounter with God celebrates God’s unconditional love for us and grounds us to the truth of who we are in a way nothing else is able to do. Because through the Eucharist we really do become the Body of Christ, we are also bonded together in a most perfect way to one another as that Body. Nourished, united, and strengthened by the Eucharist, let us individually and collectively, bring this wonderful gift to all we meet, especially the poor with whom we have a special connection.

Everyday Stewardship - Recognize God In Your Ordinary Moments We Can Prepare the Upper Room

We all know that person, don’t we? Hey, maybe we’ve even been that person. “I have a great relationship with God, but I don’t go to church regularly. God and I are on good terms. I can talk to Him just fine on my own.” There isn’t anything false in these statements. It’s important to have an intimate, even conversational prayer relationship with God. But the problem with this attitude is that it implies that churches don’t matter. Community worship doesn’t matter. Today, we are reminded exactly why that is so untrue. Why we need our parishes, our priests, and each other. The Body and Blood of Christ — that’s what it’s all about. If it’s not about that, it’s not about anything. If we don’t have the Eucharist, we’re just like the ancient priests, making sacrifices that don’t have the power to redeem anybody. Where do we receive the Body and Blood of Christ? For most of us, it’s in our parishes. The altar of sacrifice is also the table we gather in front of, as a family, to become one with Christ in the truest and realest way possible, recreating the scene in the Upper Room over and over again every time Mass is celebrated. The disciples were commissioned by Christ to prepare the Upper Room for the Last Supper. How can we take up that work ourselves? How can we strengthen the bonds in our spiritual family? How can we serve our parish, always remembering that the table is not meant to be set only for two? — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi
