ELA GRADE LEVEL OVERVIEWS GRADE 8 INTRODUCTION | GRADE 8 The Grade 8 Core ELA Units take students through literary and nonfiction texts that explore how individuals are affected by their choices, their relationships, and the world around them. In Unit 1, Everyone Loves a Mystery, students will try to determine what attracts us to stories of suspense. Unit 2, Past and Present, asks the Essential Question: What makes you, you? Unit 3, No Risk, No Reward, asks students to consider why we take chances, while Unit 4, Hear Me Out, asks students to consider the unit’s driving question—How do you choose the right words?—by providing a range of texts that allow students to consider how a person’s words can affect an audience. Next, Unit 5’s Trying Times asks students to think about who they are in a crisis. The Enduring Legacy: the anonymous groups The apology that launched a million amends By Jay Stinnett, Los Angeles July 27th, 2008, marked the 100th anniversary of Frank Buchman’s Spiritual Awakening – one that directly linked him to the cofounders of AA. As a young man Buchman gave everything he had to establishing a shelter for homeless boys in the slums of Philadelphia. The shelters success surpassed his budget and the six-member board of directors insisted that he cut the amount of food being given to his charges. He quit instead of cutting back. Resentment consumed him. His family despaired that he might not come to his senses. His work was destroyed by what he saw as the short-sightedness of others. His health was well past the breaking point. “Everywhere I went, I took me with me,” he later said. During a trip to recuperate in Europe, he exhausted the funds his father gave him and existed on the kindness of his family and the generosity of acquaintances. Tired and dejected he went to an Evangelical Conference in Keswick, England, hoping to connect with F.B. Meyer, a famous minister he knew, for spiritual help. Meyer was not in attendance; another plan gone awry. July 27, 1908, thirty year-old Frank Buchman, a Pennsylvanian Lutheran Minister, walked into an afternoon service with 17 other people to hear Jessie Penn Lewis preach on the cross of Christ. FAHRENHEIT 451: The temperature at which book-paper catches fire and burns PART I: THE HEARTH AND THE SALAMANDER IT WAS A PLEASURE TO BURN. IT was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed. With the brass nozzle in his fists, with this great python spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world, the blood pounded in his head, and his hands were the hands of some amazing conductor playing all the symphonies of blazing and burning to bring down the tatters and charcoal ruins of history. With his symbolic helmet numbered 451 on his stolid head, and his eyes all orange flame with the thought of what came next, he flicked the igniter and the house jumped up in a gorging fire that burned the evening sky red and yellow and black. He strode in a swarm of fireflies. He wanted above all, like the old joke, to shove a marshmallow on a stick in the furnace, while the flapping pigeon- winged books died on the porch and lawn of the house. While the books went up in sparkling whirls and blew away on a wind turned dark with burning. Montag grinned the fierce grin of all men singed and driven back by flame. He knew that when he returned to the firehouse, he might wink at himself, a minstrel man, Does% burntcorked, in the mirror. Later, going to sleep, he would feel the fiery smile still gripped by his Montag% face muscles, in the dark. -

Fortunately, thus far she had yet to attempt anything truly criminal, but that didn’t mean that she didn’t abuse her cuteness. One of the ways she was abusing it was just what she was doing now, licking his ear when he was trying to sleep. Her tiny little tongue was surprisingly hot, and it startled him awake. “Amber!” he grunted incoherently. “I’m trying to sleep!” She gave one of her little squeaking yips, not quite a bark but somewhat similar to it, and jumped up onto his shoulder. She didn’t even weigh three pounds, she was so small, but her little claws were like needles as they kneaded into his shoulder. He groaned in frustration and swatted lightly in her general direction, but the little bundle of fur was not impressed by his attempts to shoo her away. -

Uncle Billy is that really rich, old, great uncle that everybody wishes they could have. And we actually have him. Lucky us, except of course, there’s a catch. Uncle Billy is totally useless. Not that he’s useless. He’s, like, super successful and filthy rich, and if you ask (or don’t ask), he’s more than happy to tell you all about his first job and his second job and his third job and his first business and his second business and … you get the picture. To hear Uncle Billy tell it, he was working while he was still in diapers. Whatever. Like anybody cares. Because he doesn’t do what rich, lonely uncles are supposed to do - such as adopt and lavish me with all the good things in life. Okay, maybe he’s not that lonely. He’s got Aunt Rose to keep him company and listen to how wonderful he is. And truthfully, I wouldn’t be all that good at that. But still. I’d listen if I thought it was worth my while. Which it’s totally not. As he likes to point out, the only valuables I’ll ever be getting from his will are jewels of advice. -
