The Dazzling Blackness
THE DAZZLING BLACKNESS By Jamie Brisick I’m thinking about Brazilian president Getúlio Vargas, who shot himself in the heart in 1954; I’m thinking about Pepê Lopes, who died in a hang gliding accident while trying to win a second world title in Japan in 1991; I’m thinking about Aryton Senna, the Formula One racer who died on lap seven of the San Marino Grand Prix in Italy in 1994. I am not thinking about death explicitly, but death hangs over all of this. I’m bodysurfing the north end of Barra da Tijuca, a spot called Praia do Pepê, named after the hang glider. The swell is out of the southwest; the waves are a whomping four foot, mostly lefts, with the occasional short burst of right. The water smells of sewage, with a distinctly Rio tang. My romantic self likes to think of it as bathing in the collective DNA of this city of six million. My more practical self fears Hep A. On my feet, Da Fins, recommended by bodysurfing guru Mark Cunningham. At the tip of my fingers, a Danny Hess-shaped hand plane, which I have learned to hold with my inside hand. This is why I love bodysurfing. This is why, in my recent trips to Rio, I end up bodysurfing more than board surfing: I’m still learning new things. At age 47 I may be declining as a surfer, but as a bodysurfer I’m unquestionably improving. The tadpole grows feet and hops across the terra firma. The surfer sheds board and swims off to eternity. -

The technique is based on multi-modal mixture mod- els and efficient computation using online EM. The learned models can be used to browse mul- timedia databases, to query on a multimedia database using any combination of music, im- ages and text (lyrics and other contextual infor- mation), to annotate documents with music and images, and to find documents in a database sim- ilar to input text, music and/or graphics files. 1 INTRODUCTION An essential part of human psychology is the ability to Figure 1: The CD cover art for “Singles” by The Smiths. identify music, text, images or other information based on Using this image as input, our querying method returns associations provided by contextual information of differ- the songs “How Soon is Now?” and “Bigmouth Strikes ent media. Teacher Title and author Brief summary (Last of book Name) Secura The Hate You “Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: Give--Angie the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy Thomas suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.” This book addresses controversial issues of interest to many adolescents and includes scenes and language that reflect mature content. Imbarus Out of the Dr. Aura Imbarus vividly details Christmas Day 1989, Transylvania when she, her parents and hundreds of shoppers drew Night--Aura sudden sniper fire as Romania descended into the Imbarus violence of a revolution that challenged one of the most draconian regimes in the Soviet bloc. Aura recalls a grisly execution that rocked the world and led to five harrowing days of bloody chaos as she and her family struggled to survive. The next day, Communist-controlled television released photos showing that dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife had been assassinated-though many Romanians, the author included, believed the executions had been staged since Ceausescu was known for using stand-ins to pose for him. Nevertheless, Aura tries to convince herself that life post-revolution will be different, but little changes. On May 7, 1997, with two pieces of luggage and a powerful dream, Aura and her new husband flee to America. -

Two Teens and a Budget It Pays to Belong !
Two Teens and a Budget It Paysays to Belong ! Two Teens and a Budget CHAPTER 1 - ANGELA Liam always insists that the car wasn’t the last straw. But trust me, it was. At least that’s what finally made dad explode at Uncle Billy’s house. And dad, like ... never explodes. Especially at Uncle Billy. Uncle Billy is that really rich, old, great uncle that everybody wishes they could have. And we actually have him. Lucky us, except of course, there’s a catch. Uncle Billy is totally useless. Not that he’s useless. He’s, like, super successful and filthy rich, and if you ask (or don’t ask), he’s more than happy to tell you all about his first job and his second job and his third job and his first business and his second business and … you get the picture. To hear Uncle Billy tell it, he was working while he was still in diapers. Whatever. Like anybody cares. Because he doesn’t do what rich, lonely uncles are supposed to do - such as adopt and lavish me with all the good things in life. Okay, maybe he’s not that lonely. He’s got Aunt Rose to keep him company and listen to how wonderful he is. And truthfully, I wouldn’t be all that good at that. But still. I’d listen if I thought it was worth my while. Which it’s totally not. As he likes to point out, the only valuables I’ll ever be getting from his will are jewels of advice. -

Therefore, this information is not present in the interview’s video format. (0:00:11 – 0:00:27) Matt Costantino: It’s September 14th. We're down here in Charleston, South Carolina. This is Matt Costantino from the Intrepid Museum, and I'm sitting here with Uel Smith who's a Growler former crew member. So, Uel, thank you for joining us. Could you introduce yourself? (0:00:28 – 0:06:44) Uel Smith: My name is Uel Smith. I boarded the Growler . about November the 1st, 1958. And, Growler was passing through Norfolk, Virginia, where I was stationed on a fast attack submarine. I was a cook striker, and I was getting ready for my third-class exam, but when the Growler pulled into Norfolk, it was tied up across from my ship. And should I tell you the story about . ? But anyway, so one of my buddies came in down to the boat and said, "You got to see this, come look at this. This is -- you'll never believe it, come look at . ." So I went up topside, went up through the hatch and looked over and there was the Growler, and it was the ugliest thing I ever seen, I thought, wow, what is that, and we was all laughing about it, you know, because we were used to speed and getting going, that one wasn’t going to go anyplace.
