Raising Awareness: The Piper Caster Story

PIPER CASTER (age 8) was born a happy & healthy little girl. At 8 months, she couldn't control her eye muscles and began to cross her eyes at times. A few months after that she started wringing her hands and putting them in her mouth over and over again. She lost the ability to feed herself or sit up on her own.

“As a first time mother I had a strange feeling but wanted to seek medical advice to put to rest these horrifying thoughts that something could be wrong with my little girl. After many doctors appointments and several friends and family members voicing their concerns, genetic testing confirmed a diagnosis of RETT SYNDROME at 16 months of age. At that moment our worst nightmare became our reality,” says mother Heather Caster of Northland Kansas City, Missouri.

Rett syndrome is a debilitating neurological disorder that AFFECTS 1 IN 10,000 (MAINLY) GIRLS. Girls with Rett syndrome are born normal and develop for the most part like a typical child, but between the ages of 9-16 months, girls with Rett start to regress and lose all the skills that they once had. Children and adults affected with Rett syndrome are trapped in a body that does not work correctly. Although their brains are fully intact, it cannot send messages to the rest of the body due to a missing protein. This means they experience severe seizures, scoliosis, heart issues, severe apraxia and many other health issues. Most are confined to a wheelchair and cannot say a word without using a special eye gaze device to help. This diagnosis means 24/7 care for the rest of their lives.

Parents Peter and Heather Caster saw the exciting news of gene therapy within 2-3 years and decided they had to do something to accelerate the funding for this promising treatment for their daughter and more than 15 other girls in just the Kansas CIty area.

In the winter of 2016, with his son helping, they swapped motors in Mabel. Rodney would get frustrated with the small things, the shop being a mess or Brandon not picking up after himself. Six months of frustrations paid off, June 4th 2016 Mabel was fired up, and all Rodney could yell was “holy shit she's loud!” Rodney would frequent local car shows and loved taking Mabel cruising. The awards were great but Rodney loved the attention Mabel got... she is a showstopper. With the entire family crammed inside, they would cruise. Times were looking up for the Baumgarden family, enjoying hot rods, time in the shop and the new beginnings. 2018, Brandon and his wife Sandra are expecting their son, sadly March 6th, 2018 baby Loukis passed away. April 2017, Brandon was tinkering in the shop on other car projects they had. It was about 2 am when he called it quits and Rodney met him on the porch. They decided to hang out watching car shows on TV, talk about future plans with cars and things they would love to do one day. That afternoon, Rodney had asked Brandon to take him to his doctor’s appointment. The car ride was quiet when Rodney looked at Brandon and said, “I love you son” and Brandon replied, “I love you to dad.” Two miles from the hospital, Rodney suffered a fatal seizure and heart attack. Brandon lost his best friend. Rodney’s daughter, Chantell, was his moral support when it came time to all his ideas he wanted to do with Mabel. She loved the time just sitting there keeping him company while he tinkered. Being in the garage with her dad was her favorite place to be; she says that is where the best conversations with her dad came from. Rodney and myself were friends on Facebook, but with our busy schedules I was unable to shoot images of Mabel before Rodney passed away. I reached out to Brandon and we set a date that would happen, October 28th. An exhausted Brandon, Sandra and their crew met up with me in the West Bottoms. Mabel left her mark leaving an impressive burn out mark. I took a photo of Rodney off his Facebook page and merged it with a photo I took that afternoon. To top it off, Janie also won 1st Place in her class. The process somewhat snowballed from there. The Shirks have started attending local motorcycle shows all over the area, Janie’s bike has been very well received by the judges and spectators alike at all of the shows that she has entered, and she has a mantle full of trophies to prove it.
