A fertile land, full of gifts, from its depth to its surface and from the bottom of its sea to its sea ports and beaches! Products signed for their quality, purity and homely care guarantee. Rare honey flavours from Arnea, Stratoni and the slopes of Athos on Mount Athos, from firs, heathers, pines, from herbs and bushes of Cholomontas and the Aristoteleian Mount! Bee-keepers and producers keep the tradition of generations past and deliver it to the next, always respectful of the «sweet» history of pure honey taste! Mushrooms of all kinds grow profusely in the mushroom fields of the mountain and create special dishes in the cuisines of the mountainous villages: mushroom pies, mushroom balls, mushrooms with louvidia (a kind of bean) and so many more… The Greek feta and all other kinds of cheese produced by local traditional creameries mean the region’s production is on a par with that of famous destinations with a tradition in “renowned” food products. Firs from the slopes of Cholomontas and Mount Stratiniko, where they are cultivated for years in the plant nurseries of the mountain, provide oxygen and protection to the evergreen forest and are then distributed to the domestic market as Christmas trees to adorn family memories! Blessed wine made from the holy hands of the monks on Mount Athos and the traditional wineries of Arnea and the organic vines that climb on the fertile slopes of Marathousa. Tsipouro[raki] clean, strong, made in the “rakokazana” [raki cauldrons] of M. Panagia, Gomatio, Ierissos, Stratoniki and Stagira by men of hard work, to ease their toil, to cheer them up and bring fun to their celebrations and to their guests! Beans and Louvidia* from Neochori, so tender, sweet and easy to cook! The soil favours their cultivation and the bean sticks on the farms of «Piavitsa» are the trademark of the region! *(beans that have been threaded on wire and sun-dried) 8 MOUNT ATHOS AREA ORGANISATION 9 Our Products Our Products Sausages from Strano, Varvara, Paleochori, M. Panagia, made by housewives with care and wholesome organic local meats. In the region of Varvara semi- wild piglets are reared, which go straight from “production to consumption”, creating tasty treats that will satisfy even the most demanding pallets! Mussels from Olybiada, famous, big, healthy, delicious, all thanks to the quality and composition of the sea water. The region is renowned for its mussels farms and the mussel-based dishes: mussel patties, mussel risotto, mussels in sauce, fried mussels, steamed mussels ..., they are a perfect complement to a summer glass of ouzo in the fish tavernas of the coastal zone. Fish from Ierissos, Olympiada, Ammouliani and Mount Athos fill the nets of every boat, small or big and form the staple diet of the Mount Athos monks. You will find them in the fish ports of the region and you will taste them in every fish taverna, fresh, almost «alive», with the scent of the sea breeze! Salted fish (salted preserves) from Ierissos, the tastier you have ever tried, in a great variety of flavours and recipes. Watermelons from the green watermelon fields of Nea Roda, so sweet and fragrant you will find it hard to believe they are real! Sweetened fruits, liquors and jams, all made of forest fruits by the women’s association of Olympiada and Varvara. The women use the gifts of nature to make healthy sweets, delicious and fragrant, suitable for every diet. Sweets from Asia Minor, marzipan flowers, doughnuts, salburekia and filo-pastry new year cakes, made in the households of Ammouliani and Ouranoupoli, Olympiada and Nea Roda and bear the intoxicating scents of the spices of the East. Oil and Olives from the plain of Pirgadikia, with an oh-so-rich, with a full and delicate flavour. ALL THIS PRODUCTION FORMS THE BASIS OF THE DELICIOUS FLAVOURS YOU WILL TASTE AT EVERY CORNER OF THE REGION OF ATHOS AND TURNS EVERY CULINARY JOURNEY TO AN INDULGENCE THAT YOU WILL WANT TO EXPERIENCE AGAIN AND AGAIN! © Foto: Nestor Spanos 10 MOUNT ATHOS AREA ORGANISATION 11 Herbs Herbs Three lush mountains, protected by the European network Natura 2000, covered all year round with hundreds of plants and herbs, from which the monks of Mount Athos and the locals make all sorts of drinks or beverages and use them in cooking and confectionery! Indeed, 4,500 species of plants and herbs grow on the slopes of Cholomontas, while more than 404 species have been recorded on the Aristotelian Mountain; these are cited in ancient writings and formed the basis for the description of Asian plants by Alexander the Great! Mount Athos and the entire Athonite state form a huge “botanical” area, which transforms religious, cultural and hiking tours into botanical excursions in a landscape that is as virgin as its vegetation.

Abstract: Historic school buildings were built during the end of the 19th century and into the beginning of the 20th century, using the traditional and locally available building materials and techniques, and most of them still function as schools. Because of the requirements arising from their constant use, there is an intense interest in their structural and energy integration, while there is limited research on the tangible and intangible values they encompass. In this study, an effort has been made to assess the historical, architectural, constructional and structural aspects of a historic school building located in the town of Arnaia, in the mountainous part of Chalkidiki peninsula, Northern Greece. The study included on-site inspection, architectural overview, determination and mapping of the constructional materials and techniques applied, as well as investigation of the preservation state of the building. Additionally, a structural analysis of the system was performed through a three-dimensional finite element model. All research data was comparatively evaluated, in order to identify the principles governing its physiognomy and structure.

The first pilot area is Kastoria which is a relatively remote and image classification, mountainous area located north-western on the Greek peninsula, while the GIS second one is Propontida which is a coastal area in the Chalkidiki peninsula (central Macedonia, Greece). High resolution orthorectified aerial images are used to detect the general types (classes) of land use/land cover (LULC) in these pilot areas. The results reveal that during the examined period, a notable spatial growth and thickening of the forest areas was found (10,51%) in the pilot area of Kastoria. The spatial homogeneity of the forested areas in Kastoria decreased only by 2,11%. Regarding Propontida, the forested areas decreased in total about 13,02% while the agricultural and arable land has increased by 12,10%. The publication of the European Journal of Geography (EJG) is based on the European Association of Geographers’ goal to make European Geography a worldwide reference and standard.

TO PETER SOMMER TR AVELS Writing this in autumn 2020, it is hard to know quite where to begin. I usually review the season just gone, the new tours that we ran, the preparatory recces we made, the new tours we are unveiling for the next year, the feedback we have received and our exciting plans for the future. However, as you well know, this year has been unlike any other in our collective memory. Our exciting plans for 2020 were thrown into disarray, just like many of yours. We were so disappointed that so many of you were unable to travel with us in 2020. Our greatest pleasure is to share the destinations we have grown to love so deeply with you our wonderful guests. I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with many of you personally during the 2020 season. I was warmed and touched by your support, your understanding, your patience, and your generosity. All of us here at PST are extremely grateful and heartened by your enthusiasm and eagerness to travel with us when it becomes possible. PST is a small, flexible, and dynamic company. We have weathered countless downturns during the many years we have been operating. Elin, my wife, and I have always reinvested in the business with long term goals and are very used to surviving all manner of curve balls, although COVID-19 is certainly the biggest we have yet faced.

Eagles Palace Excursions Proposals The last prong of Halkidiki (Athos Peninsula) is the most beautiful of all three. Civilization has not intruded into the Holy Mountain, which is in- habited solely by monks. MOUNT ATHOS REPUBLIC The last prong of Halkidiki (Athos Peninsula) is the most beautiful of all three. Civilization has not intruded into the Holy Mountain, which is inhabited solely by monks. This magnificent peninsula has been the sole province of men dedicated to the worship of God and the Virgin for well over a thousand years. Nowadays the number of functioning monasteries has dwindled to 20 with a population of approximately 1,700 brethren. Sur- rounded by an incalculable wealth of ecclesiastical treasure, rare icons and libraries stocked with precious manuscripts, they live simply according to a strict regime of prayer and labor untouched by modern frivolities. Athos, a monument of international cultural heritage, is not only a real museum of the Byzantine art, but a living center or the Christian Orthodox religion. More and more people are visiting “Agion Oros” for spiritual, religious and scientific interests. Since women are not allowed in (due to tradition), and even men need special permission to enter, an easy way to admire and experience Athos, is by taking a day boat cruise along the coast from Eagles Palace. DAILY CRUISE WITH THE HOTELS MOTOR SAILING BOAT The hotels sailing boat can be hired privately and make daily trips like: * a cruise along the coast of the unique Mount Athos republic. This will give you the opportunity to admire a lot of the famous monasteries of Mount Athos or * a day cruise to the near Robinson island and the beautiful island of Ammouliani with a stop to visit the village of Ammouliani and / or to swim in the very clear waters of Karagatsi bay or * a daily cruise to the second finger of Halkidiki peninsula and the small enchanting island Vourvourou can also be arranged.

  • 'Agonistic Pluralism' and 'The Political'
Dispatches from Greece: ‘‘We were sleeping as Individuals and we woke up as Citizens’’ Democracy and Development Revisited: Exploring openings through the social movement in Skouries, Chalkidiki May, 2015 Master Thesis in International Development and Management Author: Styliani-Mirsini Kazakou Supervisor: Elsa Coimbra Styliani-Mirsini Kazakou LUMID- MSc Thesis Abstract The universalistic understanding of the subject embedded in the Liberal and Marxist traditions together with contrasting accounts of unconstrained agency, fail to explain the contingencies of ground responses that call for social change. The paper makes a case for the opening of the understanding of the human subject when placed in the theoretical terrain of radical political philosophy elaborated by thinkers such as C. Castoriadis, M. Hardt & A. Negri, E. Laclau and C. Mouffe. The conceptualisation of the human subject as both a creative and constrained agent rescues it from deterministic excesses and accounts of unlimited power. Within these confines, the purpose of this paper was to explore the project of autonomy as conceptualised by Castoriadis and relate it to a new articulation of human development. Through a case study of the social movement in Skouries, Chalkidiki, the democratic openings realised by the creative human praxis and the re-politicisation of individuals, were explored. The self-organised communities call for a creation of public spaces where deliberation and self-reflection can take place, resulting in a re-thinking of the developmental paradigm applied during the years of Greek austerity. The question that remains open is how the new social relations manifested in the area can foster principles of social and individual autonomy in all spheres of social life.
