GAZETTEER LIST OF FOLLIES, GROTTOES AND GARDEN BUILDINGS IN FRANCE version March 2017 This is an attempt at putting together a list per department of follies in France that Folly Fellowship members might be interested in when travelling, as spin-off of our research for Follies journal 9, 10 and 15: Follies in France I, II and III , and their Addenda on the FF website. Our hope is that this will inspire others to come up with a complete survey of architectural eccentricities in France. Any additions to this list will be very welcome. If you know more than we do, please write in and tell us all about it. The address is Rita Boogaart, Tarantostraat 41, 5632 RE Eindhoven, the Netherlands. email: [email protected] The word folly is used here in its loosest sense, to cover follies, grottoes, garden buildings, rustic cement, outsider (art) gardens, romantic gardens and any eccentric architecture with folly-like qualities. Generally speaking we only mention half-follies like ice-houses, orangeries, dovecotes, bridges etc. if they are connected to real follies, unless they are real follies or exceptionally rich or peculiar examples themselves, if you see what we mean. 01 Ain Rhône-Alpes Champdor castle: 1846 separate six-storey-high (clock)tower with sundial Ste-Euphémie , Le Boujard castle: lone decorated tower with builders’ inscriptions of 1850 02 Aisne Picardie Andelain, château Maguin: 19thC octagonal brick pagoda-shaped dovecote Fère-en-Tardenois along D310 to Coincy: Devil’s Basket, rock sculptures Gauchy , ville d’Albert garden: kiosk, cascade Crécy-sur-Serre , place des Alliés: 1576 belfry with lantern, 1638-1866 enclosed, now town mark Guise , rue Sadi-Carnot: Familistères: residential complex with teahouse Laon , place de Semilly: Pierre-Michel Duval’s classical bureau d’octroi , 1847 Largny-sur-Automne , 4 route de Vez, Les Charmettes/Parc Castellant: follies celebrating Rousseau Mortefontaine , ferme de Vaubéron, D94: octagonal dovecote with machicolations St-Quentin , Promenade des Champs Elysées: cascade, kiosk, pious portal, rustic cement tree stump St-Quentin , Jardin d’Horticulture: chalet with turret, grotto, c. 1870 Septmont : park with eyecatcher donjon Vadencourt , Bohéries abbey: octagonal baroque cut-stone dovecote with wings Vic-sur-Aisne, Thurier domain (along river), 19thC belvedere tower Vic-sur-Aisne, castle: colonnade/gloriette, sham ruins Viry-Noureuil : ‘Jardin du Coquillage’, Bodan Litnanski’s house/garden 03 Allier Auvergne Charroux , remains abbey church: Carolingian tower Lapalisse park: kiosk/pavilion as centre-piece, 1936 Moulins , rue de Bourgogne: watertower with house facade, 1758 Noyant-d’Allier , La Brosse: Indo-Chinese temple complex, Buddhist Pagoda Park, 1983 Venas near Cosne-d’Allier: ‘Maison Couleur du Temps’, Mr Chop’s colourful house Vichy, 2 rue Besse: Albert Londres’ neo-Gothic house, 1860 Vichy, 19 Bd.
