  • John Thomas Mullock: What His Books Reveal
John Thomas Mullock: What His Books Reveal Ágnes Juhász-Ormsby The Episcopal Library of St. John’s is among the few nineteenth- century libraries that survive in their original setting in the Atlantic provinces, and the only one in Newfoundland and Labrador.1 It was established by John Thomas Mullock (1807–69), Roman Catholic bishop of Newfoundland and later of St. John’s, who in 1859 offered his own personal collection of “over 2500 volumes as the nucleus of a Public Library.” The Episcopal Library in many ways differs from the theological libraries assembled by Mullock’s contemporaries.2 When compared, for example, to the extant collection of the Catholic bishop of Victoria, Charles John Seghers (1839–86), whose life followed a similar pattern to Mullock’s, the division in the founding collection of the Episcopal Library between the books used for “private” as opposed to “public” theological study becomes even starker. Seghers’s books showcase the customary stock of a theological library with its bulky series of manuals of canon law, collections of conciliar and papal acts and bullae, and practical, dogmatic, moral theological, and exegetical works by all the major authors of the Catholic tradition.3 In contrast to Seghers, Mullock’s library, although containing the constitutive elements of a seminary library, is a testimony to its found- er’s much broader collecting habits. Mullock’s books are not restricted to his philosophical and theological studies or to his interest in univer- sal church history. They include literary and secular historical works, biographies, travel books, and a broad range of journals in different languages that he obtained, along with other necessary professional 494 newfoundland and labrador studies, 32, 2 (2017) 1719-1726 John Thomas Mullock: What His Books Reveal tools, throughout his career.

  • The Apostolos Manuscripts of St. Petersburg
The Apostolos manuscripts of St. Petersburg by E. Strelnikova St. Petersburg State University There are two significant collections of Greek manuscripts in Saint Petersburg with a long and complicated history. They were formed out of collections that belonged to various private, scholarly and monastic libraries. The collection of Greek manuscripts in the National Library of Russia contains 965 items dating from the 3rd to the 20th century, written on parchment, papyrus and paper. In the collection there are several manuscripts of extreme importance on a worldwide scale. The majority of manuscripts are fragments brought to Russia as items of various private collections. Last year (2014) researchers of the manuscript department finished The Catalogue of Greek Manuscripts of the National Library of Russia. It includes all manuscripts written in Greek which belong not only to the Greek collection but to some other manuscript collections of the National Library of Russia. There is still no online catalogue but recently projects for digitizing and uploading catalogues of the library have been initiated. Another important collection of Greek manuscripts belongs to the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which has from 287 to 293 items according to different catalogues. The variation is due to discoveries of new manuscripts within collections already kept in the library, and the identification of two or more items in a single manuscript. 84 manuscripts belong to the period of the Byzantine Empire. The most numerous part of the collection is RAIK (the collection of the Russian Archaeological Institute in Constantinople). The only catalogue of the collection is The Description of the Manuscript Department of the Library of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, published in 1973 and written by a Russian paleographer, Irina Lebedeva.

CONTEXTS FOR PASTORAL CARE: ANGLO-SAXON PRIESTS AND PRIESTLY BOOKS, C. 900–1100 Gerald P. Dyson PhD University of York History March 2016 3 Abstract This thesis is an examination and analysis of the books needed by and available to Anglo-Saxon priests for the provision of pastoral care in the tenth and eleventh centuries. Anglo-Saxon priests are a group that has not previously been studied as such due to the scattered and difficult nature of the evidence. By synthesizing previous scholarly work on the secular clergy, pastoral care, and priests’ books, this thesis aims to demonstrate how priestly manuscripts can be used to inform our understanding of the practice of pastoral care in Anglo-Saxon England. In the first section of this thesis (Chapters 2–4), I will discuss the context of priestly ministry in England in the tenth and eleventh centuries before arguing that the availability of a certain set of pastoral texts prescribed for priests by early medieval bishops was vital to the provision of pastoral care. Additionally, I assert that Anglo- Saxon priests in general had access to the necessary books through means such as episcopal provision and aristocratic patronage and were sufficiently literate to use these texts. The second section (Chapters 5–7) is divided according to different types of priestly texts and through both documentary evidence and case studies of specific manuscripts, I contend that the analysis of individual priests’ books clarifies our view of pastoral provision and that these books are under-utilized resources in scholars’ attempts to better understand contemporary pastoral care.
